I'm currently writing a small little story, nothing major and I'm not sure if anything will come from it. I have a few things figured out and the main character has a best friend. I've got a good idea of how I want her to act and stuff but I want her to be very alluring if anyone were to ever read any of my writings.

So, what qualities do you guys look for in a best friend? or what qualities does your best friend have that you love and admire?


(I do have an excerpt from a chapter that I would be willing to let you read if you'd like to see the basics of what I have for the best friend character. Just PM me, please.)

I agree with Electra Heart on the "someone who listens" part ^^ Also someone who's there for you when you need them. Someone you can call up at 3 in the morning without them hanging up on you. Someone who doesn't belittle your dreams and hopes and plans, but encourages them.

But... I doubt someone like that would be all too alluring to readers. Such nice and good characters tend to be a bit boring. So you'd better give her some interesting traits along with some that people wish their best friends to have. E.g. being competitive. Maybe that best friend tries to outdo your character, and they have a friendly competition going.
Or maybe your character's best friend is almost the polar opposite of your character, but they still manage to be best friends. Do you know about Wicked? Something like that friendship between Glinda and Elphaba.
You know, just something that is interesting, that's not ordinary. Something you maybe wouldn't expect. Something that makes the interaction between them worth following.

Well... I look for a listener that cares about me for who I am. I don't really care about personalities, and I think that the polar opposite idea would be nicely pulled off!

Her friend on the other hand is bubbly, outgoing, talkative and easily distracted. So, I had already kind of followed that idea. I just wanted to compare her traits to things you guys suggested.

I know, I know. (; I am currently studying for a dystopian/apocalypse novel and am in the act of writing a fantasy novel.
