Maximum Ride Roleplay

Hiro tried his hardest to tune Xmeria's screaming out for just a second, but ultimately failed. Man, he couldn't even hear himself think with her screaming at Jinx. He gave a frustrated little grunt and dipped lower in the sky, the distance plus the extra wind as he propelled himself faster above the trees doing good to somewhat drown out all the noise. He didn't have a clue where they should go; hell, he didn't even know where there was to go around here. Maybe they could just wander around tomorrow and find a cheap hotel or something.

It seemed that Xmeria was determined to get her point across even though I no longer cared. With a huff I pushed myself to go faster, knowing that Hiro and I could outfly her. I flew down lower and moved under the cover of the trees, letting out a sharp whistle every few minutes so Hiro would always be aware of my location. For the night we just needed to gain some distance and maybe camp out in a tree once we got tired.

Hiro whistled back occasionally, ducking down under the trees quickly. Flying as fast as he could between densely packed trees wouldn't be easy for a normal person, much less an eight year old, and though he was still learning it couldn't hurt to get some practice in with some real terrain. He concentrated as hard as he could on weaving in and out of the trees, not even noticing the wind that he was making rush through the trees, parting and making a perfect path/current to follow. He didn't know it, but this was the most weather he'd been able to control at one time. Usually it was just a room or a cave, but this was practically half a forest he was zipping through.

My ability to see well in the dark was definitely proving to be quite useful as I avoided slamming into trees. With such big wings it was a wonder that I was able to maneuver so well. Then again, my DNA had been spliced with the fastest bird in the skies so the agility of a falcon had to be pretty good. I kept tabs on Hiro with our new system of communication that could easily be mistaken as a pair of birdies chirping. Did he even realize the full extent of his powers? Probably not. I couldn't help but wonder why the changes in atmosphere he created never bothered me.

Xmeria stopped and said " god d-----.... storm..." she landed and cried

Hiro rode the current for a while, twisting his way through the trees. He was going way faster now, maybe around 150 miles an hour. He was a bit perplexed that he was able to keep dodging the trees so well when, almost as if on cue, he saw a trunk heading way too fast straight for him. Or rather, he was heading for it. He swerved out of the way, just barely getting by without hitting the tree, but that didn't last long. With a short cry of pain he tumbled to the ground, his wings folding in instinctively as he rolled through the dirt and dead leaves, damp with dew. He stayed curled on the ground for a while, feeling a sharp pain in his left foot but too anxious and shocked to care to check it. It wasn't really that bad, just a twig that stuck through his flip flop and nicked him, but it still hurt way worse than it should. He knew if he looked at it the pain would probably go away or at least dull down, but he wasn't thinking about that. That was the first time since he'd just been learning to fly that he'd crash landed, and boy did it feel awful. Aside from his foot, there was a dull throbbing in his chest and back from where he'd hit the ground, probably resulting in some sick bruises later. And then there was his wings. When he snapped his wings in, they'd almost folded backwards, resulting in a harsh pounding pain at both of the joints. Ow.

Hiro had long since passed me up but with my raptor/night vision I was keeping tabs on him while also being sure to avoid slamming into trees myself. There was no way I could go as fast as he was and avoid branches and such all at once. In a serious emergency I had adrenaline on my side but we weren't really running from anything so I was just taking my time more or less. I scanned the forest floor for anything suspicious and when I discovered nothing I looked up just in time to see Hiro fly right into a tree and hit the ground.

My protective instincts went on overdrive as I sped up considerably, almost flying into a tree myself. I landed just a few feet away from him and quickly began looking him over and checking for injuries. "Hiro? Hiro are you okay? Did you break anything? Are you breathing irregularly? Did you get any splinters? Is anything broken? Do you think that something may be broken?!" A mixture of motherly and natural protective instincts only made me worry about him that much more. He was all I had now and I'd be damned if I lost him to something stupid like a tree!

Hiro groaned when he heard Jinx's voice and looked up at her, one hand pressed to his temple. He avoided looking down at his foot, but otherwise he was just fine, aside from a few cuts and bruises. "I'm fine, nothing broke. But...my foot," he muttered, wincing as he reached down and removed the sandal from his foot. He looked at the stick that had cut him, noticing a small amount of blood on the side but not much else. He finally mustered up the gumption to look down at his foot, and he sighed in relief. There was a small but bloody cut on the side of his foot, not even a centimeter deep. He'd thought it was much worse, but as he regulated his breathing the harsh wings around him began to die down. After maybe a minute it was all but diminished to a strong breeze, the pain from the initial blow and his resulting headache fueling it. He rubbed his face and stood up, leaning heavily on his right foot. "It's not that bad Jinx, I'm not dying."

I looked his foot over carefully and was pleased to find that there was nothing more than a shallow cut that bled a lot more than it should have. As he stood I watched carefully and couldn't help but chuckle. At once time or another, all of us have had some pretty messed up encounters with trees and now, Hiro was no different. "Fun fact kiddo: Trees are not your friends when you fly." Even though I was well aware of his general dislike of me doing so, I scooped him up and shot off into the skies. I'd never really been a fan of being carried around when I could fly well enough on my own the only exception being my little koala hugs that I occasionally gave Ren when I was tired. "Maybe when we find a place to settle down for a bit, I could take you out for some much needed flight training. It'd be smart to get in some better practice with evasive flying and I'm a bit out of practice myself."
