                - - - - - -when the ginger mentioned a charms quiz, sophie's eyebrows shot up and she started to drum out a quick rhythm, an unconscious habit that struck up whenever she was nervous or surprised. it faded quickly though when she realised she had remembered they had a charms quiz and she had looked over the topics they had been told to look at. "bubble-head charm? the concept is quite simple; it's basically like some sort of astronaut-helmet, except you don't need any of the muggle technology for it."
                - - - - - -she paused, collecting her thoughts and making sure she was explaining it properly, before continuing. "so what the spell does is actually forms a bubble around you head - quite literally, a bubble -," as she spoke she demonstrated the charm, using her hands to almost outline some sort of circle around her whole head, "and it provides oxygen for the spell caster. you can use it to explore or survive under water, or any environment where it's hard or impossible to breath." she pointed briefly at the lake to give an example. "even works for when someone has thrown a stink-bomb because the oxygen supply is fresh." she stopped, the explanation done, a slight smile on her face as she recalled the incident in third year that had given her two detentions.

                - - - - - -the boy finished his cereal and immediately replaced it with a plate of eggs and bacon, just as wesley answered his question with one of his own. he quirked his eyebrows a bit and gave a lightly sour laugh, finishing a rasher before answering it. "it was good, not necessarily fun. once you've thrown up once or twice though, you get used to it." okay, so he was exaggerating, but only a bit.
                - - - - - -however it was a well known joke amongst the seventh years to give as much angst to the lower years, especially the sixth, about school as possible. exaggerating compulsory things - n.e.w.t.s was the favourite for that category - was easiest, as the lower years didn't know until they experienced it and they built up all the bad anticipation for it, thanks to the people in the year above, and then when it finally happened... it wasn't that bad. although, truth be told, there had been some who vomited.
                - - - - - -he moved onto the eggs quickly, having finished the bacon, and was soon half way through those. george may have eaten less than most teenage boys but he still had his fill. "it's not the professors who teach it. ministry officials come in. though, given the current status of the ministry, i wouldn't put it past them to just let the professors do it for you guys." he added as an afterthought, only realising that was actually a valid point as he said it. the papers may have been censored a lot more these days but that didn't mean the students of hogwarts weren't clever enough to figure out that something big was going on. unlike most students though, george had two uncles and a mother who were aurors so he was able to, sometimes, worm information out of them.
                - - - - - -looking up from refilling his goblet, george's attention was caught by clark's words. he had been looking forwards to the match tonight; both he and his sister were on their house teams and this was news to him. "what? the captain hasn't said anything..." his brow creased as he tried to remember if, in fact, the captain had said something. but no, this was new news. maybe it had come out only this morning and he had missed it on the notice board? "that can't be good. what do you think has happened?"

Alvin Chester
[ "the mad genius" ] | [ ravenclaw ] | [ fourth year ] | [ tags: rooney ] | [ location: great hall, slytherin table ]
[ "There is a fine line between insanity and genius; I have erased this line." ]

Alvin smiled charmingly, despite his obvious lack of sleep. "Hello, Rooney," he replied; this slytherin girl wasn't nearly
as unpleasant as her house was reputed to be. Of course, Alvin had always found house rivalries a bit silly, really, and
knew that, for one thing, most hufflepuffs were actually quite bright, and not all slytherins had to be mean and cunning.
"What year are you in?" Alvin asked curiously; he didn't think he'd met this girl before.
He looked sideways, as well, taking in the other people at the table. There was a slytherin boy that Alvin didn't know;
he had, however, overheard some snippets of conversation before reaching the table and had seen a gryffindor girl get
up and leave. Alvin mentally shrugged to himself; he wasn't about to be intimidated away from the table, and it wasn't
as if slytherin and ravenclaw were enemies in the same way that gryffindor and slytherin were. In classrooms, sure, but
nobody paid as much attention to schoolwork as qudditch except for the ravenclaws, and it was on the quidditch pitch
that the serpent and the lion had their famous rivalry. Alvin puzzled for a minute over the house mascots; ravenclaw's
eagle had never made any sense to him. After all, it was ravenclaw; why wasn't the mascot a raven?
Pushing aside these useless thoughts, Alvin smiled at Rooney.

eah inters
[ "the two-sided jokester" ] | [ gryffindor ] | [ fifth year ] | [ tags: george et al ] | [ location: great hall ]
[ "If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun." ]

Leah stared at the flyers in despair. She'd just rolled out of bed (late, as was quite common) only to find that tonight's
quidditch match was... cancelled? It was impossible; there was no way. Quidditch games went on rain or shine, giant
attack or no, even if the entire pitch was on fire they would still play quidditch. An "extra challenge," her team would
call it with a laugh. So how, how could quidditch be cancelled?
Leah grabbed her bag; it was a miracle she hadn't forgotten it, actually, but she remembered to remember. She slung
it over her shoulder and raced out of the portrait hole; the Fat Lady watched her go and tittered something about all
the quidditch players racing about today. Ignoring her, Leah raced down the steps, taking care to avoid the trick step;
she was pretty coordinated, so stepping over it was never a problem. She just had to play quidditch. It was a big deal
for Leah; quidditch distracted her from her other side, the darker, more mysterious part of her nature, usually
found flitting behind her irises, waiting for a chance to reveal itself. Leah, the confident, somewhat arrogant joker...
the least likely person to have anything to hide.
Leah was very good at keeping this side of herself in check. She kept it a secret; this pleased her, because mysterious
people love to keep secrets, and it's something they enjoy immensely.
In front of the great hall, the joker stopped, spotting a group that contained a number of people on the gryffindor team.
She ran over, and, after raising a hand in the most minute of greetings, she blurted, "what's this I keep hearing about
them cancelling today's match? They never cancel quidditch!" She glanced at George Carter, one of her teammates, and
repeated herself, slightly out of breath. "They never cancel quidditch."

year, six patronus, grizzly bear ◆ house, slytherin ◆ crush, elle ◆ location, great hall ◆ tagged, sarah, alvin, other sytherins

Oscar, for a moment, watched Sarah get up suddenly to go meet Jake. He smiled to himself, knowing what was going on. The checklist his parents had always reminded him of went flashing through his head. Is she a pure blood? That was the first question. Is she a Slytherin? Is she wealthy? Is she respected? Good grades? Was the person's connections advantageous? The dark haired boy felt himself asking the same questions, trying to protect his friend. Yeah, he was pure, yeah, he was in their house, and basically all Slytherins had good grades, so that question wasn't even necessary. He didn't know much about him, other than those things, but he felt that Sarah had good judgement. She was a Slytherin, after all, and her parents had probably nailed in her the same ideas his had in him. She knew what she was doing. Still, he felt protective over her, she was his best friend. If this guy hurt her, was less than she expected him to be....he would be in for a rough time. And that was an understatement.

He didn't have time to watch his friend go for too long, though. A kid, he looked like he was in his third or fourth year by the size of him, boldly sat down at their table, and started talking to the seventh years. Oscar glanced at him, his eyebrows raised, his gaze condescending. The Ravenclaw introduced himself as Alvin Chester, and the name rang a bell. Oscar had heard about him a little bit, over the last four years. He was, apparently, a clever kid, but a bit eccentric. He was a muggleborn, though. Oscar knew that, for sure. Slytherins, by the light of the fire at night, often talked about who was who, and what their blood was. It was just the way things were done. When he walked by those conversations, Oscar always rolled his eyes. He thought gossiping about something so mundane was ridiculous. But still, he caught little snippets of the conversation, and he knew this fourth year was a mudblood. Automatically his blood boiled inside him and his gaze sharpened to severe dislike. A mudblood, a Ravenclaw, a fourth year, coming up to their table, trying to talk to them. It was practically anarchy!

Oscar felt a tinge of guilt, because he bet this kid was nice enough, with his own kind, but he just wasn't the same as Oscar and the other Slytherins. Mudbloods, he had learned from an early age, were less. They didn't have the same magical potential as pure bloods, didn't have the same thinking patterns, or emotional depth. They were almost as bad as muggles! It wasn't Alvin's fault he was inferior, the sixth year reflected, but he just...was. Too bad, because he seemed almost nice.

The dislike returned to him though almost as quickly as it had originally ensnared him. He stood up, glaring at the boy all the while, and pushed his plate away from him. "I don't think I'm hungry anymore," he announced to the table, but still just staring at Alvin. The kid looked like a babe in the woods. That's what he was, trying to fit in with kids like Oscar. Purebloods and mudbloods don't mix. That was always the rule. That was the law. It reminded him of the currant issues, outside Hogwarts. Werewolves and vampires, ghouls and goblins, all revolting the system, begging for rights that weren't theirs to ask for. They were not equals to wizards, that was the fact. They did not deserve equal rights, because they could not possibly compare to the majesty of the witch and wizard. It was the same issue. Mudbloods thought themselves equal, and that was their mistake. They became bold and casual, like this kid Alvin: talking to them like they could be on the same plane. They would never be on the same plane. He hated to admit it, but he truly believed himself better than Alvin. From birth it was the way it was. Magic was in his veins, and though he would have liked to believe he could be this Ravenclaw's friend...he knew it just could not be done. They were too different.

Oscar backed out of the table, his intentions clear in his dark eyes. For a moment he let his eyes dart to his fellow Slytherins, but the disdain was still evident. It was like he was saying he couldn't believe what was going on. This kid, with his gumption. As he walked away (more like stormed, actually), he just shook his head, and didn't look back. His parents had wrote to him the day before, asking rhetorically what their world was coming to, with all this chaos about them. He agreed. This was chaos. He didn't want any part in it. He had been branded, and he knew, from the depths of his soul, that mudbloods were inferior. That was what he had been told from day one, until it had been burned in his mind. Oscar walked down the hall, his thoughts contained with mudbloods and werewolves, society, and change. Sometimes an inkling came into his mind, what if he was wrong? What if mudbloods were just people, like he was just a person? But it was ever only a wisp of a thought, because everything he had ever been exposed to told him otherwise. He passed a few different corridors, eyes down, not really looking where he was going. He was headed towards the clock tower, though; a place he usually found peace.

-----elle knew embarrassment first hand quite well, and watching it overtake him, turn his skin a darker, his eyes begin to wander, his hands to hide themselves, and his face to drop, she knew he truly felt bad for what he did, so she was no longer as irritated, but now more so embarrassed of herself over such an honest mistake. it was dark outside, and with robbie wearing a dark cloak and her dark brown hair, it was easy to see she could be mistaken for just a shadow. she saw apology in his eyes and she just smiled, shrugging off the incident. it soon turned upon his lack of uniform.
-----she nodded his head at his explaination, it made sense. maybe it wasn't something she would have done because it was pushing the rules, but hey, who was she to judge what made people comfortable? "why are you apologizing? you did nothing wrong" she tilted her head a little, giving a small smile, her blonde locks fluttering around her face as the wind still kept itself up. this cold of weather signaled rain soon to come.
-----beside her, elle was very aware of the sudden silence that had crept over robbie, and she felt a pang of guilt. she knew what it was like to be in an awkward situation where your crowded amongst people and no ones paying any mind to you. but she couldn't do anything about it. the thought of up and sending luke away didn't even render in her mind. that just wasn't something elle would do. confronting someone about a rude mishap maybe, but telling someone to go away? never. "not if your not in professor mcgonagall's transfiguration class or professor flitwick's charms cla- oh!" her hand abruptly went up and covered her mouth. how could she have, how could that have slipped through her mind? elle hounded herself in her head. no true intellect could have let something so important pass through her brain like that. "i totally forgot. i'm sorry guys, i got to go. professor flitwick's got a pre n.e.w.t.s exam to help us practice but it's still going to be graded. i'm sorry i gotta-" she was up on her feet in no time, scrambling to gather her books and hurry out of the courtyard and back to her room. she didn't mean to leave robbie and luke hanging like that but in her eyes, school was more important that friends. elle could be so hard on herself sometimes.
-----nearly running and tripping over the long length of her winter cloak, she was already flustered and bewildered; to top it off she crossed paths with oscar, however, not without some, no total collision. she ran smack into him. no squeak came from her; she just muttered an "ouch" under her breath, though there was no pain, just a little breath knocked out of her. she groped her books, searching for a better grasp on them as they started to slip from her fingers. pulling them close to her chest she looked up and let it soak in for a moment who it was she had just run into. her blue eyes widened, mouth parted, though she quickly shut it, a sheepish grin and embarrassment clear as day as her cheeks began to flush. "sorry, sorry! are you ok? i'm sorry."

As she burst from the hall, the sixth year's throat seemed to close up, causing her almost-sobs to stifle. her eyes weren't really swollen, as she could tell by the way she blinked. alex clutched her books to her chest and tried to take slow, deep breaths as she walked toward the Gryffindor corridor. confusion bubbled up inside of her mind, and she couldn't complete why darragh had just been such an as*, she she had done nothing to him. sure, she was a Gryffindor, but so what? she never knew being friendly or being friends with someone could put such weight on that fact that she was. but she just shrugged it off, pushing a stray lock of long brown hair from her hair behind her right ear. she shouldn't worry about a jerk in slytherin anyway. she'll just avoid him, right? it couldn't be that hard.
as she reached the fat lady and spoke the password, alex quickly walked into the common room and set her books on the table. the fire seemed to have been cooking for the past fifteen minutes, warming the dark room. her eyes drifted to see her surroundings of the familiar room she had been around the past six years. the cozy couches, lamps that they would often use to read their text books at night, the book shelf that was practically stuffed full of random books. then, a certain piece of paper caught her brown eye. she pulled her bottom lip into her mouth and took a few steps over, narrowing her eyes in confusion and snatching what looked to be a flyer off of the wall. as she took in what was in front of her, alexis quietly looked towards the window. it was particularly dark outside for it to be eight-o'clock in the morning.
quidditch had been cancelled!? being the seeker of the quidditch team, alexis had the most important part on the team, and she knew that they never cancelled a match. this was huge. alex made a definite mental note to ask Professor McGonnagal why it had been canceled, even though she had a feeling she wouldn't give her any answers. her ears rang, and her heart started to beat faster. she didn't know why, but she knew something bad was going, or expecting, to happen if the match was canceled. her grip tightened on the piece of paper, turning, and bolting out of the common room. as she reached the stairs, her heart slowed, but was definitely not at the same speed it always is. as she made her way towards the great hall once more, all of alex's thoughts about what had just happened with darragh seemed to fade. the seeker clenched her teeth as she spotted George, leah, clark, and a couple of other guys at the table. she knew George and leah were definitely on the team, and maybe they knew something.
she quietly walked up, now really knowing how they would react to her being there, since this morning she realized that they thought she was annoying. she stood beside leah and handed over the flyer to George. "did you hear about this?" alex's voice was soft and slightly quiet, her eyes silently wishing that he wouldn't think she was the obnoxious, annoying, and loud girl that he thought she was. "we should ask professor McGonnagal, not that she'd give us any answers. this is obviously huge," the seeker continued, glancing at everyone as she said it.

luke shrugged silently as elle questioned him about apologizing. sure, she hadn't felt as if he had to apologise, but he had felt that he had to clear it up. he laughed a little as she practically silently cursed herself for forgetting the exam. "don't worry, elle. everyone does it. see you," he called after her. his eyes watched her back as she quickly stumbled down the stairs. she heard her mention about being sorry to someone, but turned away to glance at Robbie, who was sitting with her legs crossed, and a book nestled in her lap. the sixth year ravenclaw hadn't talked to Robbie much, but she seemed like a nice person, with gentle, startling features that leaped out at you. a hint of a smile appeared on his face, and he stepped forward, closer to her so she would notice him and unplug her nose from the textbook.
"Robbie, is it? hey, I was wondering if you wanted to walk down to the lake? or get some breakfast? or head to the bridge? there has to be something to do around here," he spoke lightly, as though she would get scared off if he talked too firm. but he switched to his regular voice as he said, "I mean, only if you want to..." the boy bit his lip, not in a shy way, but in a knowing, adorable way that he always did when he was trying to make a friend. he nodded his chin at her book when he stated the last sentence, and looked at the girl with curiosity.
he really wondered if she would be weirded out by this question. luke wasn't interested in any girls yet, so he didn't find it awkward for himself, but he prayed that she wouldn't find it weird, gross, or just plain awkward. luke was a great guy to get along with, and he was easy going, funny, light-hearted, kind, sweet, and charming. but most of all, he was mysterious. you never knew what to expect from the guy, really.

GRYFFINDOR

year sixth year
wand holly, phoenix feather
blood half-blood
crush none yet

location the great hall
mood planning
tagged the gryffindors, nate

----------------------

---kenzie'd been up for a while now, but going down to the great hall for breakfast hadn't been a high priority because her mom had packed chocolate chip waffles charmed to self-toast with a single word, which would've been enough motivation alone to have a lazy morning. but there was flitwick's practice n.e.w.t. exam, and while she did well in charms, her father had been all over her about getting an o in that. actually, he'd been all over her about getting an o in every subject. who did he think she was, nate, or any ravenclaw for that matter?
---but she'd studied to appease him anyways. then there was the whole business of the quidditch game being canceled, which was a pity, and also a little concerning. her dad's last owl had included a newspaper clipping about uprisings in the communities of other supernatural creatures, apparently a heads up from thaddeus, a longtime werewolf family friend. she'd promised to be careful and stay safe, and that had been that, but if they canceled a quidditch game because of it, she wasn't sure she wanted to know what it'd escalated into.
---on the other hand, it gave her an idea, which she shared as she slid into an open spot at the gryffindor table.
---"so, i'm thinking of throwing a party," the blonde announced. actually, it'd been an idea bouncing around in her head for a while. she'd brought it up with nate before; he'd groaned about how she wanted to invite everyone in all the houses instead of just select people, but she'd told him to quit being elitist. now seemed like the perfect time for it, with the canceled quidditch match, and the n.e.w.t.s close enough that there was the desire to do something fun to keep everyone's mind off of the stress, but also far enough that there was still plenty of time to prepare, so one night of partying wouldn't kill anyone. plus, she could tell the number of crushes was growing, and hey, as the muggles say, yolo, right? truth or dare was a great catalyst, and, if everyone was being honest and shameless, an excuse to do all the things you want to do but normally wouldn't. "like an inter-house thing, everyone's invited?"
---she hoped it wasn't too much to ask of them to put aside the good ol' gryffindor-slytherin rivalry, at least just for one stress-free night.
