I almost find it insulting to certain artists. It's categorizing people's art skills and it has the potential to hurt some feelings. It should be a friendly art community where people can post their art and get some recognition, not feel like they aren't as good as other people because they don't follow specific guidelines predetermined by what others think is "attractive results."

Opinions on what is and isn't "attractive results" vary greatly. Hugely. I already think that the oekaki board shouldn't have two levels and should be equal- which works just fine in the other oekaki boards- instead of split. It just makes more artists feel they aren't good enough, and I know that all of us who have ever called ourselves artists have probably felt a time where we weren't at the level we should be when it comes to drawing, and that feeling sucks. This just helps amplify that feeling for those who don't make it to advanced or intermediate.

I for one do not approve of this change, not that I can do anything about it- it sounds like it's going through whether the community agrees or not. That's just my opinion on the matter.

I actually agree a lot with this. The whole Intermediate thing was bad enough. I mean, I don't mean to disprespect, but when people's art is moved from Intermediate to beginner is insulting. I'd give you an example, but I don't want to make a spectacle of my friend. How 'good' an art piece would be is all a matter of opinion, so to have an advanced board will make those who post in beginners feel even worse. Now some people will have more of an elitist attitude. Like, some people say that the art isnt good enough for intermediate. I've seen it quite a few times. How humiliating would it be to do that in 'advanced'? And this whole guidelines thing is even worse. Again, no offense, but really... Again, that's my opinion.

This was on the first page, but I felt like I should just agree...

Way to excited for the comic board :D As someone who's 20+ into her comic (hopefully many more by the time the board is introduced), will I be able to convert my already made pages into the new board?

The more I think about this the more it bugs me. I originally liked it, but I feel it's sort of... I don't know.. getting out of hand. It can really hurt people's feelings! I mean, imagine if someone was super happy with a drawing they had made, the person felt really proud to be able to post in intermediate for the first time. And WHAM, the mods move it to beginners. That hurts, I know it does because it happened to me. I drew something I was really proud of, I felt incredibly happy thinking that I could post it in intermediate, so I did. And then I come on the next day and I feel crushed to see it's been moved to beginners. It wasn't even finished, I was yet to add shading, finish the sky, and a few other things. And now I have absolutely no motivation.

Even though I don't post anything in the Oekaki, I support this. With this new change, more drawings that would have been in beginner will be in intermediate. So, it will be more even. Plus, it will be come easier to find stuff.

I don't see how this applies to the new board as that's always been a 'problem' with CS oekaki. The new changes auctally make it easier to qualify for intermediate so less art will be moved.
Also, maybe your drawing got moved because like you said it was unfinished. I don't know if you said it was a wip when you posted, but assuming you didn't it probably looked unfinished and that's why.

Other sites that group all art levels together don't work the same way CS does. For one new art dosen't get bumped to the front page every time it gets a comment (causing new works to be buried behind the same DIW picture that's been around for years etc.)

CS chose to do things differently than other sites. And even though it takes extra work to maintain I think it is best for artist visibility ^_^

One more concern about the advanced oekaki:
Won't it become a haven for art theft? Already it's popular to take a photo off Google, repaint it on oekaki and change nothing so it's an exact copy of the photo or subject and claim the photo is a "reference" when reference =/= copy. Ganking a photo off Google and badly tracing it is theft, I don't see why "photorealistic" oekakis get a pass. I feel like it's just going to make oekaki photo copying worse.

(To clarify: repainting your own photos? Knock yourself out. It's taking someone else's photo that's theft.)

But now there is even more separation. Even more to reach for. When they add a new "level" it puts some of us farther from the top. It's hard enough to qualify for intermediate, but now everyone's going for advanced.

Yes, I did say it wasn't finished yet. And it still got moved.

But, before, things still got moved all the time anyway... And a new 'level' isn't really a bad thing either, it gives you a better chance to make your art better, since it gives you something more to strive for. In art, you're always pretty far from the top because there's always a different style someone likes better and such, so, really, are you ever at the top when it comes to something creative you have made?

my problem with CS's photo reference rules.

First of all, there are tons of stock photos that can be used for free. Also, I applaud people that can create photo-realistic art. Its freaking hard. But, if you dont make any money off of the picture then there is no real problem with copying a picture. Do you know how many artists in the real world copy exact pictures when they are trying to make realistic art? Using a picture reference is not bad, especially since it does improve your drawing skill. I really don't see the harm in drawing someones photo, especially if credit to the photo is given

Oh and another thing, you guys that are complaining about the new board saying how you are knocked down and you will never reach advanced, or you will have no motivation ect... To that i say, stop feeling sorry for yourselves. I too have felt like this with my art and you know what? It motivates me to be better, it makes me want to improve and be even better than i was. Some of you might think you will never reach the skill level you want, but that takes years of practice.
