Kelly began by popping a few of the familiar pieces into place, remembering well from past turns where they belonged. After a couple pieces he became stuck, now working from scratch as his memory became foggy. He searched for pieces similar to the piece he had just matched, scanning for matching colors. The colors blended from dark to light blue as he went down the left side.

Starfish put together the edge pieces down the first side and then began working on the bottom edge. The pieces were now almost black in that area, and she had to reach over to grab one of the pieces, finding her paw brushing Kelly's arm. She blushed.

Kelly felt Starfish's paw brush his arm and let a slight smile show through, liking how her gentle touch felt. He kept going on the puzzle, just finishing his side. "If you do the bottom, I'll do the top," Kelly exclaimed, scooching over to where the top of the puzzle would be.

"Okay," agreed Starfish, finishing the bottom row and then filling in that corner with the dark blue and black pieces. There were a few small fish in her side, but for the most part, it was all the same color--making it harder to solve.

They finally finished the edge, and Kelly tried to decide what part he would do next. "Do you want to work on the water together?" Kelly always had trouble with the water, and would have appreciated help in the past. He examined Starfish carefully, trying to figure her out. She was so shy, so sweet, he doubted that she knew how truly beautiful she actually was. The way her body curved perfectly, the way her fur laid flat and silky smooth over her body, the way her eyelashes fluttered when she shied away from conversation. He loved the way her lip curved when she smiled, the imperfect kink of her tail. She was the most perfectly imperfect girl he'd ever met, he didn't know if he'd ever be able to live without her, even though they had just met.

"All right," said Starfish, his last word--together-- making her blush and flutter inside, even though she knew he only meant working on a puzzle. He was the brightest bean she had ever seen, bright like the sun markings on his coat, lighting up her cottage--and her life-- even more than the unfamiliar outside sun could. She found it hard to look at such a blinding light, so she ducked her head shyly as she crawled over to him, feeling their tails brush briefly. She almost wanted to break the puzzle into bits and start over, just so he would have to stay longer. A puzzle that was incomplete was like an abomination-- and she felt like she and Kelly were part of a puzzle now, one that had to be together. She tried to push the stupid thoughts out of her mind.

Kelly recognized the shy look instantly, seeing the nervous response in the way her eyes moved. He smiled and began eyeing the crystal blue pieces amidst the pile, beginning to collect them and separate his findings from the rest. He saw Starfish begin to do the same, and accidentally touched her paw when they reached for the same piece. When he thought they'd discovered them all, he began to piece the water together, carefully fitting together the worn cardboard edges.

Starfish blushed an even deeper pink as their paws brushed, suddenly much shyer than she usually was. She pieced one of her blue pieces into one of Kelly's, and then another. The pieces clicked into place quickly, more and more of the picture becoming visible. She tried to avoid looking at Kelly, worried that he might read the obvious message in her eyes, but couldnt help herself from glancing up at him every few seconds, just to see his handsome face.
