at least

i tried.

calla watched as nerissa dumped out her pack onto the ground. it was a good thing that most things in the games weren't breakable. the pack, she though, was the best one to be had. not because of the contents, that was mediocre - two knives, a blanket, some gloves that matched her own, and a coil of wire - but the color. laying on the ground now as it was, she could hardly see it. if you weren't looking for it, you would probably step right over it and never be the wiser, if you giant block shoe didn't get in the way. then her gaze shifted to her own bag. black like district twelve. of course, it wasn't the worst color you could have, red and yellow would defiantly have no way to camouflage themselves here, and almost everything looked black to her against the blinding snow. but it was hardly blending with its background, sitting on the snow next to her feet. it will have to do. it's not like you had much choice, back at the cornucopia... she reminded herself. the only reason she had the bag was because she had practically face planted over it.
a dull, throbbing pain in her right arm brought calla back to the present, and she remembered that in the struggle for the knife, her first struggle in the games, the blade had made a clean cut about three inches down the inside of her wrist. it was bleeding still, and small trickles of crimson fell around her arm, and dripped down into the white snow. calla gasped and bent down to the snow, pressing her arm into the cleanest patch she could find. at first it stung, but then the cold numbed the wound, and pressure stopped the bleeding. she pulled her arm back into her thick jacket until later, to deal with it more properly.
getting back onto the log, calla took a deep breath. she was still alive. that was something, wasn't it? it was more the=an she or her mentor had been, anyway. maybe now she might have a sponsor. then she might get a bandage or something. although, the cut didn't seem that bad, although it did throb. looking back up at nerissa, she spoke.
"so, are we going to work out a plan or something? or is it just, don't die." call hoped that nerissa would come up with an amazing eight point plan that included defense, shelter, and what to do with a useless district eleven girl, but she knew that she was out of luck. no one could do that unless they had the resources. like careers. but no such luck there either. calla was born into the wrong world. and now she would have to face the truth. she would be dead in two weeks, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. "maybe we should move on, and find a place to start fortifying. if we come across anyone, you get to kill." calla said this in a joking sort of way, but she was rather keen on not killing anyone. knock them out and take their supplies, calla was all for it. but she didn't want to actually take a life.

xxxxxxxnerissa watched but didn't offer to help as calla dealt with her wrist. the girl could take care of herself. after all, hadn't she single-handedly saved nerissa from gauge? but speaking of wrists... nerissa's left wrist was throbbing. it felt like a sprain; she'd had plenty of those. they were painful but there wasn't much to do about it. at least nerissa was right-handed. "a plan would be good," said nerissa. she didn't have much of one, though - maybe making some more allies would be a good idea? they'd have to face the career pack - if there was one - sometime. but calla was right. they'd better get moving. they were north of the cornucopia, but not too far from it. the longer they stayed here the more likely they'd run into other tributes. "yeah, let's get going. we should put some distance between us and the others." she didn't respond to calla's jab about killing. did that mean calla wouldn't have really killed gauge had he refused to let nerissa go? had all that had saved her life been no more than a bluff? and, when it came down to it, would nerissa be able to kill? she thought she would. being the daughter of a butcher, nerissa was around death all the time. how different could it be? killing an animal must be just like killing a fellow human being, right? and it probably was in execution. but the aftermath must be devastating. still, if it saved her life, nerissa would do it.
xxxxxxxnerissa rose a little clumsily from the log. her legs seemed to have fallen asleep. and the tick pants didn't help either. she began dumping things back in her bag - if it hadn't broken when she poured it out onto the ground, it wouldn't break now. she didn't have any water, though, unlike calla. but the wire was helpful. she could set snares, just as she'd learned in the training sessions she'd attended. and she'd have no squeamish feelings about killing animals. "okay," nerissa began, reasoning it out verbally, "we came from the cornucopia - there. so pick a direction, i guess." the monotony of the woods made everything look the same under the blindingly white layer of snow. did it really matter where they went? nerissa was kind of hoping to run into another tribute, though. if they wanted to be allies, then bully for them. nerissa and calla would need all the help they could get now that gauge was after them. and if they didn't - well, they could always use some new supplies. nerissa didn't know how cold it would get once the sun went down. she couldn't even imagine any temperature worse than this, being as used to a warm climate as she was. nerissa silently cursed the gamemakers who'd put her in such a horrid arena. they'd just had to choose snow, hadn't they? here she was at a distinct disadvantage. it didn't snow in eight, and so nerissa had really only heard about snow, not experienced it before this. but her backpack's white shade was a plus. it'd blend in easily. calla's was okay; not quite as good, but it could be mistaken for a tree from afar. nerissa shouldered her own pack, zipping it shut with a gloved hand, and turned to calla. she wasn't about to choose what direction to go in.

xxxxxThe worst of it was over. The cornucopia was always a blood bath, regardless of how skilled the tributes were. There were always a ton of deaths. At least half of the tributes typically died in the beginning, leaving the gamemakers to heard the rest of them together for the sake of entertaining the viewers. Everyone had a different take on the viewers, how they viewed each of the tributes as a person. Some were funny, others intelligent, cunning, desirable, or just dazzling in general. Bailey had went with a sort of confidence and humbleness that seemed to seep honey from it's core. Being likable was never a bad thing in the games, and surely it was working out just fine for him so far. Hopefully it would continue.
xxxxxBeing deep in thought was a dangerous thing while in the games, something that he knew he really shouldn't be doing. When a voice spoke out it startled him, hands instantly drawing the spear in a ready-to-kill position. However it only took a couple seconds to recognize the face. To recognize the voice. Catherine. With a small huff he lowered his weapon, walking the short distance to come face to face with one of his allies. "You betcha," He spoke with confidence, though without much effort you could notice that it was a forced response. Because of being a career as well as having a high score he always felt that he was being monitored. Not really a pleasing feeling, but one he'd have to get used to if he wanted to survive.
xxxxxRustling of the trees caused Bailey to be on alert once more, cautious that it could be an attacker this time rather than someone he was allies with. It wasn't until the dishwater blonde was visible that he relaxed slightly. Corinthia. It was then that his pale eyes darted to Cat, an expression on his face that basically said 'if you try anything in the means of killing her, you'll be dead to me.' Thia had been his neighbor back in district four so the feeling of a closer bond was definitely there. He'd always somewhat had a bit of a crush on her, but with the games going on it was the last thing he needed to be thinking of. Still, he needed to protect her. If he wasn't going to win then he was going to make sure she would. For her. For himself. For district four.

calla didn't like the amount of leadership that was being thrust upon her. sure, she had always been the sort of mother of the group, but completely letting go of the wheel left it up to calla to steer. she didn't like that. her instinctive side, now her only side, told her that nerissa was setting her up for a this is all your fault moment that would open up a possibility for an early betrayal. she didn't wan't one of those deaths where all the people watching cheered because she was out of the way, she wanted then to feel sorrow for her. which meant that she had to be industrious, which in turn brought her back to the question at hand. calla tried to picture the layout of the arena from her shaky vision back on her plate. clear ground behind her, she would want to avoid there, and woods everywhere else. "i think any way but that way would be good." she said, pointing to where she thought the open stretch was. what she didn't want to do was get to near the edge, then a gamemaker would notice her and that was pretty much the end of calla bird. "so north it is." she decided.

after about fifteen minuets of trudging through the snow, and calla was completely exhausted, freezing, and a tiny bit wet from a spill she had taken. as she was just about to propose a rest, she heard voices.

her body went rigid, and she crouched and crawled her way to the source. there was a girl and a boy, the girl was from 10, and the guy from 3. she was pretty sure the guy's name was elliot or finnius or something.
"what are we gonna do about them?" she asked nerissa. they could throw knives, but she doubted they could deal a fatal blow, and they would have lost their only weapons. however, if they could get up onto a tree branch above the pair without being noticed... it could work. there was a slight chance. hopefully nerissa had something a little more cement though.

xxxxxxxxxxUnfortunately, the two allies were in trouble. They possessed zero ability to build a shelter, which proved to be a vexatious problem. Furthermore, they were too close to the Cornucopia for Crystal's liking; the blonde was tense and was beyond frightened that they would be found. Thus, she followed her instincts and suggested, "We should keep moving and search for shelter. If it comes to it, we can find a way to make a shelter... if we last that long, of course." The last few words she whispered inaudibly because she did not want to face the truth of what could happen. She swallowed and glanced back at Elliot in time to hear him explain the glasses. "That's fabulous," Crystal stated cheerfully. It was so much easier to travel during the night and sneak up on others; the night vision glasses would undoubtedly help. Smiling at the thought, she put the glasses back in her pack and slung the bag over her shoulder. "Let's get a move on before someone finds us," Crystal commented, beginning to stride across the snow covered wasteland.
xxxxxxxxxxStill tightly clutching her bow, Crystal began to think about the other tributes. Nearly half were murdered during the bloodbath, and it left her to wonder who was still remaining. Certainly, the invincible careers were all still alive and well. She could pretty much guarantee that. Fortunately, no one else posed as great of a threat. On the other hand, the tributes in district seven were intimidating to her. No one else quite made an impression. Crystal, however, did remember two preteens who teamed up. They seemed nothing more than little girls a year or two younger than her. Their names were Nerissa and Calla, she recalled. To be honest, Crystal couldn't be sure why they stuck in her mind. Maybe it was because it reminded her of the pure dread of the games, and the pity she took on herself and the other tributes. Perhaps, Crystal had a slither of sympathy for the careers, too. After all, there could only be one victor. That's just the way it was.
xxxxxxxxxx"Wait, do you hear something?" she whispered so quietly Elliot could only hear - maybe not even him. Crystal abruptly stopped walking, allowing her gaze to scan the area. She pulled out her bow just in case another tribute had snuck up on them. Unfortunately, her eyesight was not as good as her superb hearing. The blonde stayed unmoving for more than a minute before she should her head with a sigh. "Never mind. It was probably nothing," she mumbled, continuing to make her way through the maze of neverending pine trees.

you don't wear her chains
xxxxxxxnerissa trudged through the snow behind calla a bit more slowly than her ally. she was attempting to conserve her energy, not burn out all her body heat in one go and freeze, quite literally, for the rest of the night. she didn't speak. silence was probably best, and besides, it wasn't like she and calla could effectively make small talk without seeming weak or something. who knew how the people at the capitol saw this? chatting might well be mistaken for friendship. and friendship didn't win you the games. suddenly, calla stopped in her tracks and dropped to the ground. what in the world...? nerissa looked on in confusion, finally noting the voices carried on the frigid wind. tributes were nearby. she followed calla's lead, dropping to all fours and ignoring the snow that entered her sleeves. better to be uncomfortable than dead. she peeked through the trees, spotting the girl from ten and the boy from three. it was an unlikely alliance. who would've guessed that the girl from cattle and the boy from tech would team up? they seemed like total opposites. well, she wasn't about to judge their choices in allies. after all, she and calla were a kind of unlikely pair as well. they were both fourteen and wanted to win. but nerissa was beginning to realize that was probably the only similarity between them. she snapped out of her reverie as calla spoke. how had she let herself get so distracted while their lives were in mortal danger? "what're we gonna do about them?" calla hissed quietly in nerissa's ear.
xxxxxxxnerissa could have sworn calla's whisper was almost inaudible, but the girl from ten turned her head as calla spoke. she must have incredible hearing, or perhaps just good instincts. either way, nerissa wasn't taking any more chances. she began to back up, planning to talk to calla once they were out of earshot of the other two tributes. but her coat caught on a pine branch. she tried to work it free quietly, and for the most part succeeded, making no more sound than a rabbit. but it was the motion of the branch that was her undoing. as nerissa pulled her coat backwards, the branch flew forwards. it sent a shower of snow raining down on the two girls from higher up in the tree. that had definitely been audible. there was actually no way the two other tributes were not going to check it out. though, if they were lucky, the two might run in the opposite direction. but that was unlikely, very much so. nerissa shot calla a panicked glance. what had she done?
