The Glass Reflection

A Quick Message

I know I've disappeared from CS for a long while, and I probably won't be on 24/7 like I used to. But, I don't think I'll be disappearing off CS forever just yet. This is still my favorite place to post my random stories, and it'll always be my home for that. I was spurred on to write some more when I saw this writing competition. I remembered all the chapters I had saved up on my computer when I was looking for what I should enter, and realized: Why should I let those sit there never to be read? So I picked out my favorite story of those, and decided to start posting it! I know several of the people that do read my stories may want me to finish the stories I still have going before I start a new one, but I hope this'll still be fun to read for you guys. I will be entering this in the competition above, but regaurdless, you should check it out!

If you don't want to read, just go check this competition out! This story will be entered in it, and you should enter to! ->> Link : D

The Back of the "Book"

Jacent always had a perfect life in his pack. He wasn't know to everyone (which was a good thing), and he had everything he ever wanted. But when the wolf of his dreams, Makasia, slips away from him, he notices things weren't as they appeared.
As he's racked with flashbacks and visions, he soon discovers the leader of the large wolf empire, Traniconda, has brainwashed his pack and painted the sights they've always seen. As Jacent discovers the truth, he becomes widely known as a wolf wanted by the "beloved" leader.
Now, Jacent must find how to escape the boundaries the leader's set. Will Jacent ever find the real world, or will he die like all the other wolves that have escaped his head-spell?

"No!" A cry rang back at me, responding to my pain. I could barely recoginize that it was the echoes of the mountain, but I didn't care. To me, it was someone who would always reply to my extreme emotions and temper, to show they agreed with me. "NO!" I turned my head over my shoulder, screaming over my shoulder and letting my tears travel over the wind to maybe bounce of the mountains. I opened my eyes, as if I could watch. It was inevitable for me to look back at my lovely lying on the ground.
The grey she-wolf lay on her side, her paws splayed out infront of her as if she was floating through the waters of heaven. "No!" I screamed again, rearing up and landing with a heavy thud on the ground. Her pink eyes suddenly burst open, but they refused to open fully. "Makasia!" I lowered my head, hunching my back over to look at her at the same level of her eyes.
She looked tired, and so distance even though she was in reach. Her eyes couldn't focus, but she smiled pathetically. "Jacent," she huffed happily, though her body gave a heave with such a simple word. Her pink eyes matched her nose, ears, the dots on her cheek, and the criss-crossing lines across her left shoulder. Her pretty markings seemed to make fun of me now, their soft colors suddenly bright enough to burn my eyes.
"You'll be ok, don't worry," I tried saying to her, but with my mouth was dry, my lips cracked, and the words heavy on my tounge, my voice came out shaking.
Her eyes suddenly focused, but they focused on the mud by my back paws. She started crying softly, tears soon streaming down her cheek and closed her eyes again. I panicked, trying to soothe her but failing to respond to her tears. "Why...why are you crying?" I managed to say weakly, though it was the most stupid sentence of my life.
Her eyes opened again, torrential panic rising in her eyes. "I don't want to die." Her words made sense, but I couldn't believe I was hearing them. "It was too short. All too short. I died in my first battle, I had so much more left in me!"
I shook my head, my jaw hanging open. She let her eyes slip closed again, weeping silently for how long, I didn't know. I just stared at her, frozen from that moment, unable to say anything. Eventually, her eyelids slid open slowly, but I could barely see the pink irises behind them. Her lips quivered, until she said, "Goodbye," She was weeping so quietly, he could barely here her.
"Goodbye," I whispered back, entranced. She let her eyelids slide closed. Suddenly, he leaped up straight, and looked down at her panickedly. What if she's gone before I- I didn't let myself finish the sentence in my mind and screamed, louder than ever before, "I love you!"
I waited, my whole body shaking. Her eyelids twitched and she opened her mouth trying to respond. "I love you too...Ja..."
At first I was relieved, but then saddness squelched my happiness. "Makasia! No!" I tried to scream, but my cry admitting my love for her had left me without a voice. I leaped to her side, looking panickedly at her body. She had deep, wounds her belly, the lines the same as the pink ones against her grey fur that glistened with droplets of water. The edges of the wounds sparked with gold light, and I started to breath so fast I couldn't catch any air.
I turned away, silently stumbling away from where my beloved Makasia lay in the mud and water. I saw other strong brutes standing beside a mud trail, and as I passed I heard things like, "I'm sorry, Jacent", and "You should get back and rest, Jacent", but I didn't take them up on any offers. A greenish-yellow haze fell over my eyes, blinding my eyes to the real colors around me. The ground tilted back and forth, and the path and wolves swung in and out of my focus. Suddenly the ground bluntly jerked to an angle, and I stumbled along, struggling to find where the path was and where it appeared to be. It felt as if my brain start to melt, and the pain was excruciating.
Adding on, something started hammering behind my eyes and I couldn't even register I had gone past my fellow soldiers and they were standing behind me, calling anxiously to me. My mouth hung open, it becoming ever harder to breath. Sounds slurred together, and I had not bearings at all.
I heard a quick growl in my left ear, and suddenly my thoughts went black. My paws slipped out from under me and I slipped down a hill. A grey haze replaced the greenish-yellow one, and glitz of white light shimmered like fireflies through my eyes. I guessed some of my fellow soldiers came to my rescue, and a set of teeth sank into each of my ankles. The ground and grass started to move downward from me as they started dragging me up, the earth smearing into my side. A sharp thud hit my ears, and it started to thunder in my head as the same sound started ringing. Everything went completely black, leaving me with no thoughts, images, or sounds except for the raging thunder of a single thud.

Awwww the first chapter is so sad. It's so wonderful though and really leaves me on edge. What will happen? I can't wait to see.

(The little chapter number thing is currently under progress c:)

I slowly blinked open my eyes, and even though fear suddenly pushed through me as I didn't recognize the place I was in, I only could lift just my head. I struggled to get to my paws when I found an unrecognizable she-wolf standing infront of me. Not a single thought was running through my head, just the buzzing of a broken radio. As if these things happening to me had no meaning, though I knew that wasn't true. She turned around, and I slid back onto my stomach, fear overtaken by confusion. She had a pure white pelt with the tattle-tale mark of a nurse; a red plus symbol on her forehead.
The symbol was actually a marking of her fur, and though once again I wondered how that was the case for all nurses, I felt relief in the fact I actually thought something.
"Good morning, Mr. Soldier," She said in the seemingly robotic voice all nurses had that was supposed to be "comforting", and the "Mr Soldier" part to be "respectful". I was comforted by the look in her eyes that truely looked as if she wanted me to be alright. I had seen so many nurses out as a soldier, many for myself. Plus, there was the fact that all the nurses he had ever seen had a dark black or brown nose and had a grey tint in their eyes that made them look dead and unfeeling. This nurse had bright, pale green eyes and a bright pink nose just like Makasia. The nurse reminded me a lot of Makasia, both of them seemed to be the same age and were both rather small for it too; though the nurse had an even smaller build than Makasia. I guessed the nurse was for me, since I was lying in the main room, on the floor, in a bed a nurse would've set up, and the...
I found the energy to suddenly leap to my feet. "Makasia's dead!" I cried, though my voice cracked to the point where I barely finished the sentence while still being heard. "She's dead! Where is she? She's dead!"
"Jacent!" The nurse cried, running over to me and putting her paws ontop of mine to keep me from running. "Jacent, calm down!" I could tell she was trying to keep me from freaking out, but we both had to know she wasn't strong enough to keep me down. But I was too far into despair to even put the effort into trying to go anywhere. I could see relief flood into her as I stayed put to listen, "I'm sorry, Jacent. She's gone."
I let my weight shift back, and I easily escape her grasp as I stumble back until I slump down against the wall. "It'll be ok, alright?" She said to me. I fixed my eyes on her, though my words were slipping from me. "Oh, I forgot...my name is Kaytalie, and I'm going to be taking care of you for a while. The other soldiers said you had a bit of a breakdown...and you did get a pretty bad hit to the head."
After she finishes speaking, suddenly another wolf flashes right infront of Kaytalie; looking exactly like her though there were lots of markings and it was all different shades of dark blue. I narrowed my eyes, but before I could react Kaytalie's pelt flashed back. It started quickly flashing on and off like a flashlight, and it took me what seemed like years to realize it was Kaytalie the whole time...but her pelt was changing colors. Kaytalie's mouth was moving, but I couldn't hear a single sound. Suddenly, her voice hit my ears, lacking the sound of anything else.
"Oh, the soldiers that brought you home said that they want you to keep you're mind busy with work, or something close to that," Kaytalie said, her pelt staying white most of the time except for the occasional flash, which was so quick it was barely noticeable; except to me, who was watching her for it. "They said you're supposed to be present at one of the meetings between the pups and Traniconda."
As soon as she said his name, our humongous "society's", or pack's, leader suddenly appeared in the room. He wasn't actually there, I could tell; his gold pelt and brown markings seemed transparent. But he stood there flashing me his white-toothed smile. I shut my eyes tight, and the shatter of glass and bang of metal being struck filled my ears. When I opened my eyes again Traniconda's vision was gone, but there wasn't no broken glass or anything.
Kaytalie hadn't reacted at all; not to Traniconda or the crash of glass and metal. I shoved myself off the wall and to my paws, and as soon as I glanced out the window, just a hole in the wall covered by vines, it acted as a mirror. Instead of seeing the dens outside, I saw myself, and behind me a blue-pelted Kaytalie. I wanted out. As my heart started beating in my ears and my head started pounding, I leaped out of my den onto the gravel and mud outside. But I was still trapped in my body, and I knew there was no way to fix that.
"Uh, you can go for a walk or whatever, I guess..." Kaytalie's voice came from behind me. "B-but don't go to far, ok? I can come find you later, right?"

(The little chapter number thing is currently under progress c:)

"I'll meet you here this evening, ok?" I held my chin straight, so I could look right over Kaytalie's head. "So don't wander off, alright?"
"My injuries have healed. Why are you still here?" I asked her bluntly, not meeting her face. But even looking over her, she looked a bit hurt. But I was preoccupied to the point it didn't register in my reactions.
"They uh...they don't have a new assignment for me...? Yes, so they want me to stay here, and make sure your alright." She replied. I wanted to convince myself that I was refusing to look at her because of her flashing pelt. It still flashed, everything I thought it would stop, it would give me a headache with the popping colors. But I couldn't tell myself that for sure. She just wanted to be nice...but I couldn't get myself to change my tone.
"Jacent, go on." I glanced down at her, and she was looking at me worriedly. I looked over my shoulder, and realized the guard was looking at me impatiently.
"Oh...I, uh...huh, ok..." I rambled, though I'm not sure if it was to Kaytalie or the guard. I followed the guard through the narrow rock entrance to the large den. I felt claustrophobic, rock brushing against the fur on my shoulders. But the walls seemed transparent. As I looked at the walls, I could catch glimpses of wolves running, fighting in the walls. But I could barely turn my head without my muzzle running into the walls.
"Remind yourself why and what your doing, aloud," The guard commanded in a growl.
"Why...?"
"Just do it Jacent!" He snarled.
Fear smashing into me like a wall, I instantly let my thoughts run to my mouth. "Our leader, Traniconda feels the need to meet all the pups when they're young. He wants to be their first teacher, besides their parents. I am a guard, there to make sure nothing endangers the pups or Traniconda."
Before I knew it, claws hit me in the face. I hadn't realized the walls had opened up into the main room. I looked up to see the guard baring his teeth at me, blood dripping off his paw. "Don't disrespect them like that!"
"What did I do?" I asked with a whine.
"Traniconda can protect himself, and nothing's going to happen anyway. You're there to give yourself a job." he sneered. "Maybe now you'll have a reason to get out of here." He huffed as he turned and headed out the way they came. The walls suddenly jutted into place, revealing the real pathway. I backed up to sit in front of the entry way. I looked around frantically, the rock turning into a blue-shaded mirror.
And opening in the cave on a slightly raised platform made from the floor caught his eye as it changed colors. The proud gold and brown wolf known as Traniconda padded out with his head held high, though it was clear he knew the only one waiting there would be a guard. Traniconda looked at his cave proudly, though his smile seemed to fade when his eyes fell on me.
He sat down, looking me over, his muzzle held high. I looked back, feeling out of place. He turned his eyes to the large opening where the pups would enter, and my mouth instantly was filled with a bad taste. Like a poisoned medicine if it could got rotten. I turned to look at the left, trying to catch my cut, if it was possible. My eyes fell on the stone beside me, and I could see my reflection glistening back. The marks through my left cheek felt strange, burning pain poisoned by sweetness. The blood-red lines in my face seemed to change, and as the taste in my mouth started to fade, so did the color. It seemed to melt away, until it had turned to a purple scar running down my face like water.
The world seemed to slam into my head all at once, and I closed my eyes against the darkness.
When I opened my eyes, I turned to look back at the cave. The world seemed to be covered by fog, and when I looked down, my body had disappeared into the mist. When I looked back up, Traniconda had appeared where he had been sitting before. But now a pup sat in the room. Only one; a tiny, yet strong-built male pup sat in the room. He sat there, staring back at Traniconda awkwardly. Traniconda seemed to have a neutral, yet unimpressed look on his face as he stared down at the pup.
"Hi," The pup squeaked, trying to get attention instead of the other non-existent pups taking up more of Traniconda's eye.
A smile suddenly appeared on his face, and he bent down to reply to the pup. "Hello," His reply seemed dramatic, but as I thought about it, realization hit me. This was
his meeting with Traniconda. I was the only pup there. Not even a guard had showed up. I stood up, watching myself and Traniconda as I started to pace to the other side. I basically hit a wall halfway through the cave. A wall holding the fog in on this side, while the rest of the cave seemed clear. The fog was going to make me go cross-eyed, I could swear. The wall didn't look real, and I was able to walk right through it the second time.
But as I did, the sound of glass shattering rang out in my ears. The world seemed to reflect onto the other side, the other side barren while this side now had Traniconda and myself. As I focused my eyes on the ground again, Traniconda's words caught my attention. "Why is he the only scrawny pup here?"
"My name is Jacent!" I replied back.
There was someone else there, someone else Traniconda was talking to. But when I looked up, it was still only the two of us. But before I looked down, I realized something. Traniconda wasn't actually there. A scrawny, old, sick-looking white-ish wolf sat in his place. I locked my eyes on him, turning and walking back to the other, foggy side.
As the sound of glass shattered in my ears again, Traniconda and I appeared on the foggy side again. And the gold and brown pelt of Traniconda was back. And he was suddenly talking back to me with a smile on his face. I turned and went back again. He was mid-sentence when the glass shattered on the other side. "I feel bad for you- how bad is it really?"
The pain of cold ice started to creep down my muzzle, and harsh words were pounding in my ears. Every time I took a step, I would end up being pulled back to my original place. I sat down, trying to stay put, but I was pulled back even faster. This time, the glass seemed to shatter in my ears four times all at once.
I shut my eyes tight, and opened them up to find the mirroring stone in my face. I had slumped over onto the wall, and as I pushed myself up, Traniconda was standing there, looking at me with concerned eyes. "Jacent? Jacent, why don't you head back outside for now, ok?"
I looked back at the stone, and my face looked as if it was healed, though I knew it wasn't. I could feel the wounds sting, and blood dripping down my face. And I suspected if it weren't invisible, my ears would be bleeding. But it was completely invisible to me, and to the pups. "Al-alright," I replied, my mouth dry. I turned and slipped back the way I had come, not meeting his eyes or the pups. As I looked around, I realized there was fog drifting into the tunnel from the main room.
I could hear his voice echoing down the tunnel too, though I could see I could walk through it. He was mid-sentence once more, and the faint sound of broken glass haunted me ears.. "Jacent's been through a lot, helping protect our pack. He's probably
- I need another guard here. He was slumped against the wall with his face and ears bleeding, how's that?"
I looked at the walls of the tunnel at my reflection, and now I could see he was right. But some how, Traniconda had changed the appearance of many things. He had even made another wolf look like himself when I had met him. How bad was what? How was he doing this? Does Traniconda even show up to any of these or does he have wolves take his place? Who is he actually talking to? Why does the fog have anything to do with glass? How...how...how...?
As I stepped out of the narrow tunnel, I lost my thoughts and tripped over myself, passing out on the ground.

Chase this is really one of your best stories yet. I thought Last Hope was the best but this has definitely surpassed that.

Also if you haven't figured it out I was SkieRunner but I changed my username since I was bored. :3
