xxxxxxx"i don't get it," said cat quietly. we were talking over the library's table; being quiet was not a choice we had the luxury of making. but cat was having a hard time keeping her voice down, i could tell. "why was she better for that part then me?"
xxxxxxxthe she in question was aoife, cat's older twin sister. the part we were discussing was that of ariel in the school play. at ten, these kinds of things matter to you.
xxxxxxx"we look exactly the same - we are identical twins. and we sound the same, too." cat kept rambling, exploring all the different possibilities out loud. i wanted to remind her to keep her voice down, but cat would have snapped at me. that was how she acted to her friends. it was actually an honor to be yelled at by cat. to everyone else she was known as the girl who never showed emotion, not even a little bit. she never laughed, never screamed, never cried - not in public. only when she felt comfortable around the people surrounding her did the real cat come out. and if i was a drizzle, cat was a hurricane. boy, was she opinionated, and willing to defend it too! the first time she opened up to me i thought she and aoife had switched places.
xxxxxxxaoife was the outgoing twin. where cat remained apathetic, aoife spoke up loudly. it took me years to realize that aoife was simply voicing opinions of her sister she'd heard at home. it was their compromise - cat wanted her words to be heard, and aoife needed to be the center of attention. for the most part it worked wonderfully, until you came across situations like this one, where one twin simply outperformed the other. i was cat's biggest cheerleader, but i knew her acting skills were mediocre at best. aoife, on the other hand, was excellent for a ten year old.

xxxxxxx"no, she's not. you just have different strengths and weaknesses." it was something my mother would have said. but, hey, it was true. cat had always been more athletic than aoife, just as aoife had always been more of the social butterfly. and aoife might be good at acting, but... "you know, you're better than aoife. she might be an actress, but all plays start with a playwriter."
xxxxxxxi could practically see the lights go on behind cat's head. she stood, knocking her chair over and earning a glare from the stern-faced librarian. "you really think so?"

meet john, the boy who could fly. his powers and
abilities have been developing since he was a very
young child. as a toddler, he was known to float as
others his age were learning to walk. no one knows
really how his powers of levitation work, and john
couldn't care less how they do. much like the legen-
dary flying peter pan, john is immature and a bit of
a goofball. he likes things simple and sweet. unfor-
tunately for him, that's not always the case. he hates
pressure and chafes under it, setting him against the
more serious members of the team.
