Cam kissed her forehead. "No problem," he said, and walked into Eli's room, trying to hide his hoarse voice. "Sweetheart?"

Eli looked up. "Hi Daddy!" she said happily, running over to him. She'd recently turned five. When she noticed his red eyes, she frowned. "What's wrong, Daddy?" she asked, hugging his leg and looking up at him.

Cam knelt to her level. "One of me and Mommy's friends had to go away, and it made us sad," he said, explaining it simply for her.

Eli frowned and watched him, her brow knitting together as she processed this. When her parents were sad, then so was she. "Where'd your friend go?" she asked, hugging her arms around his neck.

"He had to go to Heaven," he said. "But he was really sick and now he's all better," Cam told her.

Eli's brow un-furrowed as he explained and she nodded a bit. "Is your friend coming back, Daddy?"

"No, that's why we're sad. 'Cause even though he's better, we can't see him anymore."

"Don't be sad, Daddy. He's okay now." Eli pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek, wanting him to feel better.

Cam smiled at her attempt to cheer him up. "I'll try not to be, sweetheart. For now, do you wanna go make Mommy feel better?"

Eli nodded. "Yeah, let's make Mommy feel better." She let go of him and took his hand instead.
