Cam nodded. "I know, Alli," he murmured, rocking her.

"You told me once that h-he was the one that b-brought us together. Without him, we w-wouldn't h-have met," Alli whimpered.

"I know, hon," he said. "I'm sorry," he murmured.

"We could have done something...brought him to the infirmary. Anything." Alli cried harder.

Cam sighed. "Alli, everyone have their time," he said. "And there are a sequence of events that lead up to that. And this was Papa Joe's time," he told her.

"But it didn't have to be." She wiped her eyes and leaned back to look at him sadly.

"We don't know that for sure," he said.

Alli shook her head and looked down.

"Look, I know it hurts, babe. I'm hurting too. But we can't torture ourselves by dwelling on the hurt. Look at the good things, the happiness he brought."

Alli sniffled a bit and looked up at him. She managed a tiny smile. "He brought me you."
