Nixie
"I hate this place," my sister muttered, not bothering to disguise her sulkiness as she continued to glare out the window. My mother didn't reply, remaining as tight-lipped and ghostly pale as she had appeared five days ago when Dad announced gravely we we're moving yet again.
Though, I saw little reason to complain. With my fancy new camera in hand, I was more passionate than ever about catching the perfect photos as we traversed from place to place; the horizon-stretching skyline from atop the Empire Sate building, the expanse of Yellowstone, Washington D.C.'s cherry blossoms in their full splendor, the scene of the Grand Canyon painted before me... The entire country was captured within my camera, well, almost all of it anyways. We hadn't traveled anywhere neighbored by an ocean, but that was about to change. Mom swiveled the wheel southward, her lips still tightly pursed as a radiant view greeted us. Hand-in-hand with a true-blue sky glittered a sea like a thousand silver scales. Not even hesitating, I whipped out my camera and began snapping maddeningly, attempting to obtain for myself the glorious scene.
"It certainly lives up to its name, doesn't it, Ammy?" I nudged my sister, who was still staring moodily out the window, clearly not sharing my enthusiasm. "You know, the 'Sunshine State.'" Having had unsuccessfully dug a response out of her, I added, "Maybe you'll get that tan you've always wa--"
Like a snake, she spun around to face me. As much as I had agitated her, Ammy's teeth might as well have been dripping with angry venom. "You know very well that I have as much of a chance of getting a tan as you do!" She shrieked, glowering at my auburn hair and snow-white skin. As a cheerleader, Ammy was very sensitive about being pasty, even though she had the stereotypical barbie hair down to a T.
After scowling at me for a few extra seconds, she huffed indignantly into her seat and fixated again towards the window, the crossing of arms and the presence of a pout included. It was hard to believe that she was a whole two years older than me.
