Lines, BG, Shading, and coloring were all done by Cougar28. Thanks Cougar!

In the cold, snowy, tundra of the arctic, lives the Kilid. These Kilids are horse-like creatures that are heavily built. They have thick fur all over their body, and especially long hairs on their neck, chest, belly, and jaw. They have very thick feathers covering their hooves. These are all things they use to stay warm on those cold −40 °C winter days. They are born with short, bobbed tails. Long tails would get filled with ice, snow, and mud. They have a large horn on their forehead used for breaking ice to get water, fighting off predators, and fighting for mares. They are fight or flee animals, however they usually fight. They adult mares usually get to be 19 hh tall at the withers, while males can reach up to 21 hh. None are ever shorter than 16 hh. Although they may fight with other creatures, they are often very friendly to their own kind and anything they don't consider a threat. They are almost always pinto colored or spotting like an appaloosa. It is VERY rare for them to be a solid color. They would be extremely difficult to train due to their hot hotheadedness, but I suppose you could if you were patient.

Arctic Kilid Life

Postby Hyeme » Mon Jul 22, 2013 6:50 pm

Kilids aren't born with a horn. Their horn starts growing at about 3 months and is finished growing by the time they are of two years of age. They usually live for be about 40 years old. Like horses, there is no significant difference between mare and stallion other than a couple obvious differences. Their fur grows to be about 3-4 inches thick and longer on their chest, neck, and belly. They have very thick feathering covering their lower legs and feet. They have short tails. Although long tail may be pretty, they would get filled with snow, ice, and mud and therefore are not suited for the arctic. They have hooves similar to a horses, except they have much shallower frogs on the bottom of their hooves.

The history of the Arctic Kilids dates way back to the ice age. Yes, they once lived among the woolly mammoths and saber toothed tigers. Later in time, when the Eskimos (more properly called the Inuit) came into their territory, they were first thought to be unicorns, only seen by the children with the purest of heart. It wasn't to long before that legend disappeared when a herd of Kilids killed a group of hunters. They felt threatened and to protect their young both the stallions and the mares charged at the men with their horns ready. After that, the Kilids were considered dangerous beasts. The Eskimos tried not to bother the Kilids however as they were still gorgeous animals of great power. For about ten years there was a terrible famine. Seals, many types of sea life, hares, and foxes were very scarce. This left the Eskimos with little to eat. At this time, the Kilids were considered to beautiful and god-like to kill. However, when many people began dying of hunger, this ended. The Kilids were hunted like crazy only so the Eskimos could survive. Their meat filled the Eskimos bellies, Kilid fur covered their body, and the bones were used as weapons. When the famine ended, Kilid hunting continued for many years. Finally there were only a few Kilids left. This is when they were considered extinct and just another "unicorn" legend. The Eskimos then moved or died off and the Kilids began making herds again. Recently, while testing and educating themselves about string theory, a group of scientists found a small herd of Kilids. The dumb founded men immediately took many notes of the creatures. An official came out to see these "Unicorn-like things" that the scientists kept talking about. Upon seeing one, he demanded that one should be taken into captive, shipped to the United States, and tested on. The herd of Kilids protected themselves and attacked the men trying to capture them. Three men were killed, and two injured. The entire herd of Kilids were also killed by the men. They decided to leave any other Kilids be and just take notes from a distance, give them a name, and classify them.

Like horses, they have a fight or flee sense. However, they are usually sent on fight. They will use their horn to teach their young manners and protect themselves against enemies. Since they have lived in the wild since sometime before the ice age, they are considered impossible to domesticate. So please note, they cannot be domesticated and will never be able to. They would not be able to adjust to the new life easy enough plus they tend (most, not all.) think of humans and other strange creatures as threats and enemies. They are not aggressive animals, and only attack when they feel threatened. When this happens one of the herds trusted mares takes the foals and elders away a ways to keep them safe and the rest of the members attack. They attack by charging with their horns ready and in front.

Stallions will try to impress mares by either fighting for them, or simply performing a "dance" in front of them. When mates, the stallion will give his life for his mare and foals. It's up to the mare to teach the foal manners. WIP

Kilids are herbivores, and therefore only eat plants. This makes living in the arctic rather difficult, however they are used to it. Here is a list of their foods they eat in the Arctic. They will also eat other random vegetation that they find. You can click on the names of the plant to see a picture of it :)

Reindeer Lichen
A light-colored, fruticose lichen belonging to the Cladoniaceae family. It grows in both hot and cold climates in well-drained, open environments. Found primarily in areas of alpine tundra, it is extremely cold-hardy.

Purple Saxifrage
It is a low-growing, densely or loosely matted plant growing to 3–5 cm high, with somewhat woody branches of creeping or trailing habit close to the surface. The leaves are small, rounded, scale-like, opposite in 4 rows, with ciliated margins. The flowers are solitary on short stalks, petals purple or lilac, much longer than the calyx lobes. It is one of the very first spring flowers, continuing to flower during the whole summer in localities where the snow melts later. The flowers grow to about 0.5 inches in diametre.

Arctic Grass
Various types of grasses that grow in the arctic.

When blizzards are around and extreme cold sets in, you must be wondering, where do these Kilids go for shelter? The answer is, in their fur. They don't exactly have shelters like some other arctic animals. Like the musk ox, their fur is completely cold resistant, making them warm even in extreme cold and wind.
