Skye Briht
-| The Desperate

If he rushed the guy, could he get a knife between his ribs? Fingers anxiously tapping his knees, Skye measured the distance between the group of students -he had been jostled towards the front, he guessed because he was new- and Pendragon, who's speech he wasn't listening to a word of. He had promptly shuffled towards the edge of the crowd to take a seat, not wanting to be surrounded on all sides. No. The blond decided, eyes lowering to the ground with a dejected glare. He's gotta be prepared for that. Surely a man speaking to a bunch of criminals would have some sort of precautions in place.

Shifting his weight, his gaze wandered to the buildings on either side, and the entrance at the front. A shudder ran through his arms, making his fingers twitch, before returning to tapping at his legs. He was locked in from all sides, surrounded by people -criminals- that he didn't know. It was a nightmare. Again gauging the distance to any one of the buildings or the front, Skye shook off the idea of making a run for it -that could be saved for a better time: such as when he knew if there was an exit inside any of the buildings or the make-up of the inevitable security at the gate.

Finally he looked at the people directly around him. A few talked amongst themselves, a few listened impassively, and none of them caught his attention. Craning his neck, the teen took a quick look behind him. One girl looked almost amused, but calm; feeling like a scared rabbit himself, Skye couldn't help but watch her for a moment. Then the girl stood up and started walking away. He didn't think to look around, and the headmaster had gone suddenly quiet; he got to his feet after her and took a step away himself. The horrible speech must be over- Suddenly Pendragon was talking again, his voice magnified and angry. Skye froze on the spot, eyes stretching wide to stare at the man, and then slowly at all the others -who were still sitting. Damnit.

What an interesting turn of events, Europa chuckled to herself. Upon hearing Pendragon's angry voice yell out her name, she had only angled her body so she was sideways to him. However, he had also blurted out more of an indistinguishable yell at the only other human standing in the crowd, making her turn around fully and face the boy. All eyes were trained on him and her, but mostly on him, as Europa was infamous around Vandyke Academy and already known for her antics. This boy, however, was a newbie. A small one too, with unusually blonde long hair. Didn't look very criminal-like but you never know. Anyone could be anybody. Europa knew that very, very well. And keeping up with her reputation as the girl who constantly blatantly disregarded the Headmasters authority, she grinned a very cat-like grin and softly said, "You don't want to get on my bad side, do you, Daniel?"
More sputtering from the Headmaster, and more suppressed laughter from the crowd. Opening ceremony was always eventful in one way or another. Waving her hand, she spun around on her heel and stalked off the field, tired of this melodramatic nonsense. She knew the Headmaster would prey on the blonde boy anyways eventually. He always gave up with her in the end, making her the constant winner. Thanks for volunteering to be the next victim of the Headmaster, she grinned and thanked the kid under her breath. Suddenly, she stopped. Not because she felt sorry, no. Ha, she was over those kinds of emotions (though of course that didn't stop her from feeling them occasionally but not now). Europa was one for enjoying the embarrassment of other people. She definitely wanted to see this. She was already quite a far ways away from the assembly gathering, but she could still hear and see. So, heading over to a tree she leaned against it, her lean frame hidden in the shadows of the leaves. Her steely blue eyes watching, interested.
"You boy! What's your name?" Pendragon fumed. "Don't tell me you're another Europa. I can barely handle her along with you. How dare you leave without my finishing. What are you, a sheep? Constantly following the crowd? Sit back down until I give the approval to leave, thank you." The Headmaster was red in the face and spoke with an extremely curt tone. "I hope you all don't follow the example of that girl. She will be dealt with, I promise you. Now, you may all leave. Don't let anything of this sort happen again." Under normal circumstances with normal teenagers a school leader would simply wave it off with a slight warning. Pendragon couldn't afford to do that; this was an institute for criminals and you have to be harsh with them. At least, in his head he thought so.

Dark eyes lifted upwards to focus on the sky, Brendon idly watched the clouds begin to crawl across the blue as the wind ruffled his wavy blond hair and lifted it from out of his eyes. He liked just watching them slowly make their way towards the horizon, mouth slightly ajar in idle wonderment. Sometimes the clouds were fast and hectic as they made their journeys as if they were running away from the sun or were trying to hide her, though others times they were sluggish and slow-moving as if they were injured and incapable of moving quickly enough to escape the sun's rays. Was that a strange way to view the sky? No, it was simply his interpretation. The amount of stories you could create from just watching the crowds and letting your imagination run wild was amazing. Or, at least, Brendon liked to think so.

The blond was distantly aware of Pendragon's rambling voice but after three years of hearing the same tune over and over, it became easier to drown it out. He truly wasn't paying attention in the slightest, though he doubted any of the 'students' around him were. Speaking of the 'students', Brendon finally lowered his gaze from the sky, blinking slightly at the large grey-blue dot that appeared in the top-right of his vision every time he closed his eyes thanks to the sun and almost attempting to chase it, he then glanced over at the newcomers. Brendon was sat relatively far back though more around the middle. One leg was crossed over the other, his foot bouncing slightly, as he continued to observe them though his expression generally vacant, brown eyes wide as he took them all in. None of them peaked his interest as he skimmed over them though that didn't prevent him from staring.

Brendon liked to watch others. He found it fascinating. You could work out all about a person by watching them in the moments where they didn't know they had been noticed. And this boy was a pro at staring. Pendragon's voice was ultimately background music as he continued to assess the newcomers, eyes narrowing slightly to himself in curiosity, before movement towards the back of the room took his attention. Europa. Of course. Zoning out once again, Brendon looked back towards the front of the room before idly digging his thumb nail into the arm of his plastic chair, smiling to himself at the numerous little crescent shapes he'd created.

However, at the sound of the Headmaster yelling, Brendon slowly lifted his head before it moved to focus on Pendragon's latest 'victim'. This one was clearly a newbie and the boy stopped attacking the arm of his chair to lean forwards as if he were watching some sort of television programme. This kid looked a little on the scrawny side and Brendon tilted his head as he waited to see what this boy's reaction would be to having the Headmaster yell at him. A quiet chuckle, barely audible over Pendragon's booming voice, left Brendon's lips that were now curved up into a grin. So much action and the newcomers had barely been here five minutes. Not that Brendon minded. In fact, the more excitement the better. He often felt a little giddy when he saw others being yelled at. Though generally if he was the source of someone's anger and was the one being yelled at, it was a whole different story. When the Headmaster finally seemed to let up and shut that damn trap of his, Brendon made a low whistling noise before climbing to his own feet. The boy knew what was coming next in the days agenda, not that he had many intentions of taking part. Generally he was left alone - the way he liked it - considering that whenever he was nudged even the slightest bit it would send him over. He remembered such a thing happening in high school, the last time almost resulting in the entire building being burnt to the ground. No, he prefered to watch. It was much more fun.

Sparrow ≖ the obsessive pyromaniac.
xxxtagged; europa, skye, brendon

The young African American, a mere nineteen years old, watched the new students come in. She had to be one of the oldest members here, having been a part of this silly excuse for a school since she was fourteen. Five years now, she had spent putting on the show that they were teaching her control for her obsession. She had always had the control, she had never yet her obsession bring her out of her right mind unless someone provoked her. The arson was purely voluntary, and she had made sure no one was hurt. Yet she was sent here anyway. Precise, intellectual, the young woman was smarter than these adults gave her credit for; at least when it came to fire. She knew at least a hundred or so ways to set something on fire, and a hundred more to set someone on fire. But unlike some arsons and pyromaniacs, it wasn't done for revenge, and it wasn't done because she couldn't help herself. This was all purely her choice, and she could go about as a normal citizen, always could have; she found other things to set on fire without going against the law. But the law thought they could train her for their side. They might as well just let her get on with her "normal" life.

A yawn escaped her when Europa began to do her thing. She caused the initial disruption, but Sparrow's fun was always in a harmless circus act that usually impressed, intimidated, and amused the new students. Of course, she was always "dealt" with after with, but for some reason the adults left her alone especially; were humans really that afraid of fire more than anything else? As soon as Europa was gone, she pulled out her weapons, all except for the switchblade she kept hidden, strapped to her ankle. The rest, a few lighters, matches, and the like, she pulled out. These actually weren't confiscated, because she grew more dangerous when her fire was taken away than if you just let her get it over with; she never tried to hurt other human beings with it, but she was still plenty vicious if provoked.

Lighting three matches, she tossed each one in the air, barely five minutes after the headmaster had finished yelling at Europa and began to bark at the newer kid. All eyes turned to stare at the little balls of light that had flared in the corner of their eyes. She caught each match between thumb and forefinger by the part that wasn't burning, and then threw them to the side. She had lined the area around the plastic seats with cotton. Suddenly a ring of fire was around them, crackling merrily. "Sparrow! How dare you! You could seriously injure someone with that!" yelled Pendragon. She stood up, being in the front row, and all of a sudden the fire stopped. "Ignore our stuffy headmaster. Lesson one for you new students: cotton, when its massed is stretched and displaced, burns quite quickly before the fire abruptly goes out. However, there are many more different types of chemical reactions that last much longer." She looked at them all in turn, as if daring them to provoke her into showing them just how long something could burn. With that, she stuffed the remainder of her matches and lighters into her pockets, heading off from where the "orientation" of sorts was being given. The ceremony was always boring until the older students chose to spice it up; and Sparrow never missed that chance.

Despite her best efforts, Carmen, for the life of her, could not get herself to fall asleep. She frowned a little as she shifted in her chair, the sudden uproar in the field. Sullenly and with a huff, Carmen opened her eyes to see what the commotion was.
Ah, Carmen thought to herself dully, it looks like Europa does this every year. The girl was standing up a few seats to Carmen's left and leaving the ceremony. She remembered that Europa, one of the smartest people she knew [and one of the few people that Carmen didn't get annoyed by -- much], had done something similar last year at Carmen's first entrance ceremony. A few of the newcomers were watching with almost admiring eyes, but Carmen was impatient. Europa was being rude. Blatantly so. Carmen didn't like it when people were rude. Those were the people that she killed. Oh, but she wasn't allowed to kill, anymore. At least, not by her own choice. How dull.
She had seen it all last year and Carmen was not interested in watching again, this year. However, impatient to get this entire ceremony over with and anxious to get moving, Carmen was about to shout to Europa, "Sit down, for the love of God, and stop making such a scene." Fortunately, the headmaster dismissed everyone at that moment [She's a terrible example, Carmen thought to herself blandly]. She rose from her seat and allowed herself to be taken up by the sea of students leaving the fields. Another year of this place ... well, it wasn't so bad. Once you got used to the food and the squeaky beds.

Now, what with the commotion of the fire set by Sparrow and the Headmasters fruitless yelling, Europa started to get bored, and a bit apprehensive, if you must. The fights were coming next, as most of them new. The newbies, in an effort to "secure" themselves as certified criminals as well as some of the more aggressive seniors would start fighting. Hand-to-hand combat, knife wielding, Vandyke had it all. Obviously, as someone more superior to them (Europa was always more superior in her head) she had no interest in engaging in their petty bickering. That didn't mean she didn't have to watch, but she felt it was better watching from her room overlooking the courtyard (where a lot of the fighting took place) and the House's corridors and hallways, which was also where much of the yelling and punching happened. Europa figured that the Headmaster and the administrative board knew what went on every first week of the year, but they'd probably given up any hope of stopping. Especially on the first day, since there were no classes, they needed to keep themselves occupied. Clearing her throat quietly she made her way into the House, where all of them stayed together (smart, right?) and headed up to her third story room. All the rooms were assigned according to seniority - the first years on the first floor and so on. That didn't stop some of them from trying to snag the better rooms on the upper floors, of course. As the assembly broke apart, Europa watched silently from her window. Oh, there it is. The first fight. It looked like a surly, rather big first-year had been bumped into by an almost as big first-year. Some second-years joined in for the fun of it, it seemed. Propping her chin on her hand she sat down in a chair placed by the window and watched with amusement.

Carmen watched blandly as some of the first and second years began to fight over -- what, a room? How petty.
Wait. Carmen frowned a little as she leaned against a wall. Did she try and do that her first year? She couldn't quite remember. Where was her room during her first year? Blinking, she evaded and sidestepped a few punches that came her way -- "Hey, now, I'm not even participating in your bull fight!" -- as she thought about it seriously. It was one of the few little things that Carmen would obsess over for one day and forget all about it the next day.
She had the distinct feeling that this was all rather familiar to her, so perhaps she did pick a fight with some of the senior members when she first came. Oh, but she couldn't have been that much of a troublemaker ...
With a chance glance up, she spotted Europa observing everything like the hawk she was -- and of course, she was looking quite entertained by the gladiators. With another duck to evade a swinging arm, Carmen called up to her partner-but-technically-closer-to-boss-much-to-Carmen's-chagrin with a vigorous wave.
"Europa!" shouted Carmen. "What room was I in first year? I can't remember if I mauled someone the first day or not."
Her tone sounded mildly joking and lighthearted, and very few of the students bothered to pay attention, but to anyone who knew Carmen, they would probably concede that her utterly ripping someone to shreds on her first day for no apparent reason probably wasn't a joking matter.

The fights that first broke out had led to more fights, and soon enough, the courtyard was a jumble of fists and kicks and spots of blood here and there. All very amusing. Her eyes travelled over the crowd of silly people and she spotted her long-time comrade in pranking and crime. Carmen Stringfield was a hardcore criminal with the ability to do anything. That much she knew. When Europa first met Carmen she immediately took note of how devoid of emotion those eyes were. She liked that - it was a trait you wanted to have, in her opinion. She raised her eyebrows a fraction as her comrade waved at her. Opening her window so that all the noise from below travelled into her room above, she heard her question.
"Of course you did. You ripped that poor fellow's - Jameson, I believe - mouth so he had to stitch it all back together. He looked like a one-sided Joker on the ugly side. He wasn't all that intelligent, if you do recall. I had fun watching you." Europa managed a smirk on her mouth, as some of the younger first-years heard her and looked at Carmen, sidestepping the girl. They were right to do so. Usually around this time - lunch time, actually - the fights ebbed out, and of course, Europa's prediction was right. More people settled down and realized their hunger for fighting wasn't as intense as their hunger for actual food. What morons.
Signaling to Carmen, she inclined her head towards the dining hall (situated in the school building for the teachers to keep an eye on the students) and headed down immediately. When she was on the ground floor she spotted the cold-blooded girl she called her acquaintance and headed towards her. "I'm bored of watching these idiots fight." She said this with a belittling look at a lot of them.

The moment that Brendon reached the courtyard, he could already hear the clear sounds of scuffles behind him as he walked. Sure enough, as he paused at the main building to lean against the wall with arms folded over his chest, a few fights had indeed broken out. He'd watched with interest when two broad first-years started their own little scuffle, then there were a few second-years who clearly wanted to brighten their day with a bit of hand to hand combat. Shrugging to himself, Brendon guessed it was a form of training. A perhaps more relaxed form of training. Though he still much prefered to watch. An excited smile broadened over his lips as the courtyard gradually became filled with more and more scuffles and fights. Some had even drawn blood. Oh, how he loved watching this. Especially when larger first-years picked on some of the weedier-looking ones. Those fights didn't last long, though, and were a bit anti-climactic.

Tilting his head to the side, Brendon couldn't actually remember if he had participated in these fights when he'd first arrived. 'Course, he'd had a few scuffles in the three years or so that he had been here. You weren't properly 'initiated' into the place if you haven't. Why else do you think no one went near him? Despite how calm he looked, he could be totally different in less than a millisecond. He was pretty deceiving in that sense. Biting his lip, Brendon almost wanted to join in the fighting. It had been a while since he'd gotten into a fight where he could break an arm or actually sustain real injury. It was those kinds of fights he loved to take part in.

Brendon had been so attuned with his thoughts and the fights that he didn't hear Carmen and Europa as they yelled from one to the other. It was only when the fights started to swindle, an irritated frown now on Brendon's face, that he realised that food was the likely culprit of their pathetic, short-lived fights. Brendon made a frustrated noise before he too headed into the building and towards the dining hall. Now he'd have to wait till next year again to have the chance of smashing someones face in. He definitely missed that. Brendon enjoyed scaring people. The boy was slightly more edgy, however, by the time he reached the hall, even more so when he realised how crowded it was. He didn't like crowds. Not at all. There was something about them that set him off ease. He'd spotted Carmen and Europa though made no moves to get closer to them. Brendon simply kept to the edges of the room, taking to just watching the masses for now.
