Guys I remember someone [I think it was Glassy?] asking about the witch school idea I had a thread back. So, uh, I'm kinda thinking of reviving it! Here's a recap for those not in the know-how:
Ok, so, the setting is gonna be a school for witches! [There will be both male and female witches, and, yes, they'll ALL be called witches.] The rest of the world will already know about magic and witches and such, and many non-magic people will even support them! The witches will often do shows and exhibitions and stuff to get the non-magical public interested in them [thus allowing their schools to continue being funded, for non-magic families to let their children go to study being witches, to generally stay in the non-magic folks' good graces, to entertain, et cetera. However, the last one would be looked down upon by a lot of witches].
I'm debating on placing the school in a different dimension. There could be overlapping dimensions, and many separate ones, and the school will be located in the friendliest one. There will be other schools, some located in much more dangerous dimensions. I'm thinking that the main school the RP will be set in could be either a very small, underfunded school, or the biggest school in the world.
Whichever the school is, there the students will, of course, learn to harness their magic powers. There will be standard classes like potions, flying, and magical history. There will also be specialized classes, but I'm not sure what they'll be yet. The world [at least, the magical world] will be full of all kinds of trinkets and magical items. The students could have the choice between using staffs or wands, or doing magic without either [that would be pretty difficult, and a class that focuses on wand-less, staff-less magic could be offered only for advanced students]. The magic will also rely a lot on the witch's will and mental strength. Technically, every human in the world will have magic somewhere in them, but only those with stronger wills could unlock it and begin harnessing it.
Aaand, I'm sure you're all interested in familiars, and they'll be there! Except instead of ordinary animals, hybrids and other strange creatures of any size will be possible. The schools [most of them] will only allow up to a certain size [and danger level], of course, so the witches won't be able to bring a dragon with them.
Ok, bear with me while I spew out more on-the-scene thoughts about dimensions. Specifically, the dimensions in which schools are placed. Usually, these dimensions are quite small, and the radius of land around the schools [especially smaller, more specialized ones, or those with low funding] is usually around 300-400 meters. Sometimes less. Then the land kind of... stops. You could say it's floating in nothing. The land is also bare of trees and other foliage [being made so by witches for easier travel and extra land], save for a specific area used for research and outdoorsy classes. Only the largest, most prestigious school in the world is located in a dimension with vast lands, but even that isn't anything special compared to the human dimension itself.
The human dimension [earth] is sort of a hub for the witches, and different dimensions can only be accessed through portals on earth. There ARE ways to travel from one dimension to another without going to the human dimension, but they are usually either quite taxing, extremely expensive, dangerous, or sometimes all three.
Many, if not all of the witches also live in this dimension like ordinary humans do, because most of the other dimensions are usually devoid of intelligent life [sans certain creatures] and are also mildly to extremely dangerous. If they aren't, usually schools are placed in them and there is not much space for living, unless you're a student who lives on campus. There is a surprising amount of boarding schools in many dimensions, though they are usually much smaller and more specialized schools. There are portable one-use portals, but it is usually cumbersome to move them around due to the magic it requires to relocate a portal, so they're only moved around in times of celebrations. And if a witch doesn't have a portal handy, they could always use a broom or other human means to get to wherever they need [they won't be able to move from dimension to dimension on a broom, of course].
While the witches don't specifically need the dimensions to use their magic, the force that gives their magic a boost [and some unique properties] could be drawn from the dimensions around them. So everyone's magic is a little different [of course, there are many people who receive their boosts from the same dimension.] I was thinking that the dimensions [or some of them] could be connected to the elements, which explains the difference of the magic flowing from them. Certain dimensions could only be accessed on certain days/nights, so sometimes when witches need to connect with their power on a deeper level, they do private rituals for only themselves, or they include a few other people who draw energy from the same dimension. There are also witches out there who draw their magic from the earth dimension. As magic is in its most powerful state on earth, these witches are much more powerful; however, they aren't many, and it doesn't happen often that a witch's magic is linked to the human dimension.
After the witches graduate from school, the have the option of joining a coven. Many of them do, actually. Covens would function more like guilds as well. While there would be gatherings for ceremonies and such, witches would be able to find jobs/missions from their coven, and get more opportunities to travel to different dimensions. On the other hand, some witches could end up in the entertainment business, or become tour guides to the safest dimensions.
AND THERE'S MORE because I talked about this extensively with afflicted. [I haven't seen them around on the thread in a while, though umu] but we mainly talked about classes, summoning familiars, festivals/esbats/sabbats, and things like that.
