Taking the plunge

A young Kiamara stood at the edge of the river, her short,
patterned legs quivering. Her name was Alma, and she stared
solemnly at the swirling water rushing by her. Salty teardrops fell
from her eyes as she let the wind lash at her face, and the petite
femme thought of the family she had left. Well, ran away from.
Alma had darted away from the den after her parents had cruelly
shouted and cursed her, deciding that she couldn’t live her life like
that any longer.
Each second, Alma’s breath grew more rapid as she thought about
what she was here to do. For what she hoped to be one last time
she breathed in deeply, inhaling the watery scent of the river. She
crouched down on the stones near the river-bank, making a rattling
noise, and tensed her muscles. Then, after one last thought of
hatred towards her parents, she jumped into the waterway. “This
is for you.” She thought silently, directing the thoughts to her relatives.
Alma gasped as she hit the rocks under the water with impact, forcing
the water into her mouth. Trying not to struggle, she let herself sink to
the bottom and be tossed and turned around in the liquid. Her fur clung
to her, suffocating her along with the water that was flowing into her
system, burning her little lungs. She was too young to die, but as the
sharp and jagged rocks cut her body viciously, she groaned in pain and
her wide eyes began to turn glassy.
But, as her vision became spotted with black, Alma felt a tug on her coat,
taking her by the scruff of her neck. Her senses suddenly became alert
and as she realised she was freezing cold, her head broke the surface
of the water and she spluttered brutally, breathing hurriedly. While
she choked and gasped for air, her limp body was hauled onto the
river-bank by a small blue male, a Kiamara child called Nabiu. Her
saviour’s voice was panicked and wild, and as she managed to look up
at him weakly, their eyes locked.
“Who are you?” the voice asked steadily, wary but sympathetic.
“I-,” she started, and then paused. That was a hard question. Who was
she? Between rugged breaths, she managed to reply, “I.. am.. Al..ma.
My.. parents.. hate.. me.”
Well – that seemed about right.
