meet ashling rire. although her full name is ashling, she considers it
a bit of a mouthful and often shortens it to ash. ash is mature, not
because she needed to be when growing up but simply because that's
how she is. calm and collected, ash tends to be the most adult-like of
her class. she's well-spoken and intelligent. but ash will often be irri-
tated by what she sees as her classmates' pointless antics. her family's
picture-perfect, to say the least. ash grew up as a middle child, in be-
tween an older and younger sister. maybe that's why ash is so good at
mediating. her parents always found time for their children, although
there were three of them, and ash was no exception. the assignment
of doctor's apprentice is perfect for her - being the practical person
that she is, she'll make an excellent medic in the future. all in all, she's
happy with her assignment and feels it fits her quite well.

meet nelson. although he's a loyal mai, to most he seems to take his abilities as a bit of a joke. he's light-hearted and upbeat, your typical class clown, always pulling pranks and making [in his opinion] witty comments. this tends to annoy the other mai. but underneath this surface is a sweet and insecure little boy whose parents died when he was very young - of natural sickness, nothing orchestrated by the bladers. and nelson gets that. he doesn't wish revenge on the bladers. he's just loyal to the mai because they raised him, and they're all he's ever known.
