our city has existed for over two hundred years. now that time seems to be coming to an end. the blackouts are getting more frequent. the last of the lightbulbs are practically flying off of store shelves. it's the common belief that the builders, the ones who built ember's lightbulb-lit streets, will come to rescue us when the time is right. but we don't believe in just sitting around. after all, fortune favors the prepared. we are a new generation - the twelve-year-olds, the ones about to draw our lifelong professions from a bag as so many before us have. but unlike them, we're not letting our city go black without a fight.

meet ashling rire. although her full name is ashling, she considers it
a bit of a mouthful and often shortens it to ash. ash is mature, not
because she needed to be when growing up but simply because that's
how she is. calm and collected, ash tends to be the most adult-like of
her class. she's well-spoken and intelligent. but ash will often be irri-
tated by what she sees as her classmates' pointless antics. her family's
picture-perfect, to say the least. ash grew up as a middle child, in be-
tween an older and younger sister. maybe that's why ash is so good at
mediating. her parents always found time for their children, although
there were three of them, and ash was no exception. the assignment
of doctor's apprentice is perfect for her - being the practical person
that she is, she'll make an excellent medic in the future. all in all, she's
happy with her assignment and feels it fits her quite well.

meet silas haine. at twelve years of age, silas is considered a bit of
an outsider among his peers. to tell the truth silas is even found to
be scary at times. his uncontrolled temper does absolutely nothing
to dispel that unflattering image. but it's not exactly silas' fault - he
grew up with the load of a terminally ill father on his young shoulders.
silas quickly grew snappish and irritable. things have improved for
him as of late, but it hasn't crossed silas' mind to drop his defensive
attitude. it only got worse when he chose street sweeper on assign-
ment day - he went from prickly to downright hostile. it's honestly no
surprise to anyone that silas doesn't really have friends. the blackouts
worry him but silas has no clue what to do about it.
