we used to be a strong clan. when our lands bordered that of the other three clans, we lived and prospered. everyone followed orders given by the leader unconditionally, and would die in a heartbeat for any other cat. the tiniest kit knew and practiced the warrior code. starclan smiled upon us and our cats, giving us good hunting and minimal illnesses during the colder months. then he came. a loner with his grand ideas and plausible schemes, he promised to make our lives even better. we should have known better then to go against starclan; we knew that they did not agree with the idealistic and opinionated loner. but, because we were selfish, we followed anyways. the things he told us to do were against the warrior code, yet no one stopped to think twice about it. it was for the greater good. and what was a little rule compared to the safety of the whole clan? we used to live among other clans. not anymore. we were breaking the warrior code more and more frequently - crossing borders with little or no respect for our neighbors, only hunting for ourselves, and fighting within our own members. the other clans had finally had enough. their medicine cats must have recieved some sign from starclan, something that showed them what to do. by that time our medicine cat was so corrupted that he could not decipher the warning messages starclan was sending to him. so it was without warning that we were exiled from our homes. the three other clans bonded together in order to put an end to what had spiraled out of control for us. we fought back, obviously, but the loner we had begun to depend on was killed in the battle. many more fell. even more broken than before, we fled - the whole clan, even those who still remembered the warrior code and longed to return to its peaceful ways, were no longer welcome. but starclan must have smiled upon us one last time. travelling for what felt like years brought us to this valley - a lake surrounded by glorious pine forests, a new home for our shattered group. there we stayed and settled down. several generations passed, but some cats never forgot the old way of life among the other clans. some of them wanted to return to that old camaraderie. but not all - we had been banned for eternity, and why would you want to share your land with another clan when you could have all this to yourself? the clan divided over this issue, forming clandestine groups and, in essence, making the clan even more ravaged. if you didn't pick a side, you were excluded. the groups did not socialize nor hunt for each other nor care for the sick. families divided. mates split apart. and the arguments only got worse. we no longer resembled one joined clan - we were two separate ones. with tensions rising and leaf-bare drawing near, there will be casualties. the clan might just make it through without loss if they find a way to reunite despite their differences. but have you looked at us lately? each group [for and against returning to the other clans] has elected their own leader, neither of whom has been approved by starclan. as an apprentice, you must choose your side, but betrayls are common. cats will do anything to protect themselves and the ones they love, even if the measures become drastic. once we were a united clan - misguided, true, but united. now we are brittleclan. and at any moment, we could break in two.
