Maya silently watched Markus from across the room where she sat. Why did they hate each other? Shrugging, she looked down again.
A sudden bout of screaming made her head whip up in alarm. People everywhere were running and yelling in fright. The door had been blown down, and snow and cold air was piling up inside of the safe house. Quickly Maya stood up, running towards the door to see if she could help close it.
"We have to get out!" someone yelled.
"It's too dangerous!"
"We'll find a way- come on!"
Maya picked Snowdrift up so that he wouldn't get stepped on, and looked around for her parents. She couldn't find them. "Mom? Dad?" she called out, her eyes narrowed against the wind.
The safe house was emptying out, and the few people that remained were unfamiliar to her.

Markus's eyes widened when people suddenly started flooding out of the building. What was going on? Standing up, he glanced around in search of his parents. He couldn't see them anywhere!
Fighting the fear that welled up inside of him, Markus shoved his way through the remaining crowd of people. He suddenyly ran right into Maya. Scowling down at her, he tried to hide the fear that was showing in his eyes.

Maya didn't even have time to make a sharp comment to Markus. Without a word, she slipped through the crowd to the freezing outside. As she ran over to where the cars had parked, her eyes widened.
They were all gone, even her parents. Silently she sank to the ground, tears in her eyes. Everyone had left. Why? Why didn't you wait for me? she thought, terrorized. What was she to do now?

Markus hesitated before following her outside. Narrowing his eyes against the wind, he peered through the snow. No cars. No people, except for themselves. All gone.
Markus felt his stomach knot up immidiately. Everyone was gone? Why didn't they wait for us? he wondered, his hands clenching into fists. They were probably going to die, because of their carelessness! Running a hand through his hair, he hesitated before glancing down at Maya. They'd left her too...at least he wasn't alone. But he'd rather be alone than be stuck her, alone, with her!

Maya silently wiped her tears away, and stood up, putting Snowdrift on the ground. Slowly she turned around, and her eyes widened as she saw Markus. I'm stuck here with him? Out of all of the people, he was the last one remaining. She didn't move, just remained where she was, rooted to the spot as she stared at him.

Markus raised an eyebrow when he saw her wipe away the tears in her eyes. He had been about to say something rude to her, but then decided against it. She was actually crying...this must really scare her, he thought. Sighing, he ran a hand through his hair as he waited for her to say something. Why is she just staring at me? He wondered.

Maya silently walked up to him. "They left," she said, her voice distant. "It's just you and me now." Silently she turned away. Sighing, she leaned down to pet Snowdrift. "What do you think we should do?"

Maya nodded, shivering. But what would they do in there? There wasn't enough food or water to last them even a week. We'll have to go to the next town. But would they survive the trip? It would take a long time by foot. "We have to go to the next town," she murmured. "We don't have enough supplies in the safe house." They would die of starvation in there.
Silently she leaned down and picked Snowdrift up, cuddling him close. He didn't mind the cold; his fur was thick, like a huskies' coat.
