Beau let the conversation fall into silence after she had told him that being alone was a choice and that she was going to search for water, if he'd like to join her. He could feel the anger starting up, boiling in his chest. All day, he had been going strong, talking at least civilly to the female that he offered food to. Heck, he had given her food. That was unheard of when you were talking about Beau. And yet, she still seemed to think that she was the boss and that what she had to say was the right way. That or nothing. He stood in his alley for a few long moment, watching her go.

He was unimpressed by her, he decided. She was small and while somewhat intelligent, she didn't seem to have that... That... That what? Had he ever even met a dog he could have spent more than an hour with? Sighing, he followed after her, his eyes now very unamused and the beginnings of anger still welling up inside of him. "Some of the choices are made for you," he snarled as he trailed after her, his muscled frame bouncing along the pavement.

Maybe there was a chance that Beau could have come out of that abuse unharmed, but it was doubtful. You could tell an abused dog from a loved one. They either took on the qualities of a scared, shy dog that would curl up when you approached or an aggressive, loud dog that would leap at you if you even looked at it. Beau leaned toward the latter, though there were times he could force himself to have a human hand on him or be in the company of a dog. Both took their tolls. "Maybe you just can't understand that," he retorted.

EPHYR two years;; female;; single;; waking up

lalalalaFinding nothing interesting at the park, Zephyr turned to leave. Thinking that she'd take her time to go by the farms, she trotted out and over the curb, checking both ways before crossing. Even though it was a human habit, Zephyr always walked like a pedestrian when she had her time outside. It was just her thing, and if it helped keep her alive, Zephyr was fine with it. Leaping onto the other side of the road, the young border collie shook out her pelt, spraying grass out of her fur. Once her pelt was free of the stuff, she continued on her way, tail held high. The sun beat warmly against her back, though it was not unbearably hot. Zephyr adored the farms, it was especially nice meeting other dogs there -as long as they weren't much larger than her. Then it became a frightening experience, and she often ran away with her long feathery tail tucked between her legs in fear and shame. A bee spun erratically past her nose, and Zephyr drew back her head to keep it from flying into her eyes. Although she had never been stung by a bee, Zephyr had heard it was painful, and was not eager to try.
lalalalaTurning her head, Zephyr saw another farm. A dog who looked about her size stood balancing on the gate of the farm, quite a feat. His ears were shoved forwards in an alert way. Zephyr, who was not anxious catch this dog off-guard, gave a greeting bark. Although she was still a good ways away, the bark was loud enough that the male could hear it. Picking up her pace, Zephyr elongated her strides, and her long legs ate up the distance between them. When she was about thirty feet away from the other dog, Zephyr slowed to a walk, tilting her head to the right. Well, he was talented, that was for sure. Not many dogs could balance on the gate like he did, and as well as he did. Obviously he had practiced this trick before. Wondering if she could do that, Zephyr studied the fence. Maybe, with a bit of time, she could wobble along the edge clumsily. Zephyr had tried to balance on slender things before, but to no avail. Even though she wasn't afraid of hights, it seemed that the young border collie couldn't do it. But that was no matter. She was ten feet away, and called out to him. "Hello there, who are you?'

lalalalaA dank ally would normally be a bad place for any young creature. But if that creature just so happens to be a puppy who knows his way around, there would be no danger. Sparrow was digging around in the rubbish bin, hoping to find a scrap of meat to nibble. He had skipped breakfast of dry pallets because they did not appeal to him in the slightest. His slender frame showed that all too clearly. No matter which brand or type his owner had tried, Sparrow was disgusted by all of them. Peering into the last bin in the line, Sparrow was delighted. Some absolute fool had thrown out a good t-bone. The actual bone, of course. But they were a poor carver. Several chunks of meat and fat hung off, in addition the the juicy bone. Sparrow scarfed them down quickly, gnawing on the bone after all the other items were gone. His skinny little tail whipped against the ground, making a slapping sound each time it hit the damp pavement. This sound bounced around on the worn brick walls and emitted eerily from the alleyway.
lalalalaLicking the traces of the t-bone off his lips, Sparrow wriggled behind one of the buildings in the ally. Each building created a little passageway between themselves and the fence. Sparrow was one of the only dogs small enough to find a way through them. Popping out on the other side, Sparrow chased away a cat who was also looking for food. Pleased that he was scary enough to get that cat gone, Sparrow sat for a moment to survey his work. The alleyway had already been picked clean by other dogs, who left the bones strewn about. Sparrow loved bones and chased them across the pavement. They skittered around hollowly, clinking when they hit each other. For a while, Sparrow chased them until he grew tired. Then, the young pup rested against someone's side steps. Once he had regained a bit of energy, Sparrow pounced again. One of the bones slid out onto the sidewalk. Since that one moved best, Sparrow went to retrieve it, blinking in the light. He noted the storm clouds and decided that when it started sprinkling, he would run home.

my head whipped around as the bark echoed in my eardrums, bouncing off the silent moors of farmland. i squinted my eyes to make out the dog who addressed me. it was a dog similar to myself, no larger in size, no different in shape. i tilted my head to the side, my ears drooping over, showing my curiosity. it was obvious that she was feminine, for her scent was sweet and playful. she was a pretty dog, nonetheless. atleast it was company- i rarely have company. just me and the sheep. my master no longer lets me near the chickens, but sometimes when he's gone i'll chase them around their little shack, which master calls a coop. there are also the horses, which i am smart enough to stay away from with their sharp hooves and blind steps. and then there's old betsy, who supplies master with milk. she's nice, but master has her cooped up in a little shed. she grazes when i'm herding, so i never really get to check her out.

most dogs would love the freedom of the farm, all the exciting smells and weird creatures to examine. yeah, sure it's all great. really, it is. i get fed, i have all the room to run around in, but when you've grown up here and have explore every little square inch there is, it just gets boring. you want to know what life is like outside the rickety old fence. of course i've tried to escape, to explore the outside world. but i was foolish, and my master caught me and lashed me with his belt. i still have the scar, a reminder of what happens when i set even a paw outside the fence. so when i'm not herding, i'm perched on my spot, gazing out into the yonder, wondering what life is like outside the farm.

my tail thumps against the fence as the dog approaches, a clear sign that i am friendly and mean no harm. she doesn't look like she came as a threat, her posture was friendly and her tail was wagging. i paused as she called out, asking for my identity. i wasn't about to object, for i was lonely and longed for someone to talk to.
"west," i answered. "who are you?"

EPHYR two years;; female;; single;; waking up

lalalalaDrawing even with the other dog, West, apparently, Zephyr looked him over. Nothing to fear. If worst came to worst, they would be evenly matched in size. Besides, West didn't seem like that sort of dog, he was alert, yes, but looked lonely. His tail was wagging in a gesture that clearly said he didn't want to cause her harm. Zephyr took the chance easily and decided to trust him. Even though he looked strong and wiry, there was something about him that Zephyr couldn't put her paw on. Something that denoted fear, wariness. Perhaps he had been attacked by another dog too? The scars were invisible on Zephyr because of her fur, so maybe West had scars that he hid too. Stopping and sitting, Zephyr didn't say anything for a while, wondering why he sat on the fence. She hadn't ever seen a dog balance on the posts like he did, but then again, Zephyr didn't meet many other dogs. Wagging her tail again slightly, Zephyr sniffed the air as the wind turned. She knew that scent, alcohol. Why on earth would West smell like that? Zephyr supposed that his master drunk the stuff often. Joy had something like that once, but it wasn't enough to leave a lasting smell like it had with West.
lalalalaSince she doubted that she could leap up onto the fence and stand gracefully like West, Zephyr instead placed her front paws against the sun-worn wood. She could stand up on her back legs, but at the moment, she wan't interested in impressing West. She wanted to know what he was all about first. He seemed pleased at her arrival, which was good. Tail still wagging steadily, Zephyr tried not to rattle the fence as she leaned on it. "Ello West. I'm Zephyr. What're you doing on that fence, eh?' She asked, wondering why he stood on the post. Did he do that all day, just waiting for something interesting to roll past his gate? No, that was impossible. He lived on a farm. Zephyr had heard that everyone worked on a farm, even the animals. So had West completed his chores of a sort? Zephyr supposed it didn't matter, but the gap in her knowledge was a tad bit annoying.

i looked down on the young border collie. the old fence wobbled as she put her bodyweight on it, though i didn't stagger from my position. i've done this enough times to keep my balance steady. i listened as she stated her name. zephyr... i've never heard such a name. it was unique and uncommon, though it had a nice ring to it. then she asked the question most dogs probably thought when they first saw me, why do i sit on this post? i studied her and shrugged. "its a nice view," hey, it was the truth- just not the full truth, with the backstory. "why not join me?" i asked politely. if i couldn't meet her down there, maybe she could come up here. yeah, it took me a bit to master this little trick, but if you use your tail for balance there's not much left to it.

It seemed that by saying what I had just said had hit the nail right in the head. I didn't realize he would become so sensitive to my words, and I completely regretted saying them after that. At first I didn't think he would follow, but to my surprise he did, and I found myself glad. The silence was more tense than awkward, and as I rounded the corners of blocks, the tension followed like an unforgiving stench until he finally spoke. After I listened to the words he spoke play over and overl ike a broken record in my head until it started to sound like an echo, I decided to reply with uttermost sincerity. "I suppose they are." I agreed, considering this and deciding it was true. I had a feeling Beau felt like I was now judging him, and I didn't feel good.

I found the park, and the shade welcomed us with branches as they acted like open arms. I nodded my head at them as if they were animate. There was a fountain in the middle where people tossed things, and this palce was a favorite of mine to come and collect things. Beau said something else, and I thought about it long and hard, but didn't respond. Everytime I opened my mouth I made things worse. I dipped my head in the clear pool, the ripples of water reflecting the heads of the pennies and dimes as well as the sunlight. A mockingbird was also enjoying a dip at the top of the fountain as it spewed a delicate stream of water down towards the pool where we were drinking.

Beau allowed her to lead him to the one place that was perhaps the worst in town for him to be. The park. The humans had an automatic dislike of him for his size and nature and wouldn't dream of allowing their kids near him. It was only a matter of time before someone called the authorities and had him carted away, where he would be 'humanely euthanized' by a shot and then melted down to a pile of ashes. There also tended to be more dogs gathered in the park, owned and stray alike, and the moment the golden-pelted dog was to set eyes on a leashed house pet, it would be all over. So, as he stepped into the grassy park, he averted his eyes, staring down at his thick paws and hoping no one approached them.

She went to the fountain, a nice enough source of water, though Beau rarely traveled here. He always ended up getting himself in trouble. As she dipped her head into the cool water, Beau bounded forward into the water, splashing into it with a low growl as he chased the bird away, sending it flying off to whatever home it had. The water was a relief to his thick coat. It drenched him, cooling off his hot skin. Immediately, he dropped down and rolled onto his back int the shallow water, a wide smile on his face. It was hard in the alleys to find a big enough puddle to find so much relief in, and even when he could, it was always dirty and stained his fur.

For a moment, he forgot everything. He forgot he only had one eye. He forgot who he was and where he was and why he was here. He forgot the existence of humans and other dogs. It was just him and the water as he rolled into, swaying back and forth to coat his whole huge body in the life giving liquid. Unfortunately, when he rose and shook off, flinging droplets over a wide area around him, the world came crashing back down on him. He looked out at the park with a vacant expression, finding dogs and humans and birds and squirrels.
