How on Earth could a hunter tell if a wolf is an alpha or not?

There must be signs. And they wouldnt be just ordinary hunters. Highly trained before hand. Told what an alpha looks like. Or the scientists could have tranqulized the alpha pair before hand and relocated them for like a few days while the population is being sorted out. It's not my job!

Yes, because wolves don't have alphas ;)

Yep. There's some theories tho that because of their diet, (mostly taking in vital organs) alphas might have darker markings such as the black down their back. But that's just a theory.
Otherwise, there is no difference other than behavior.

And, December's Ghost, that would cause more harm than good on a pack to remove the alphas. I'm not "for" wolf hunting, I don't support it. But the way it's being done now I think is the most humane for the wolves (although aerial shooting, and gassing out dens is not humane at all)

The term "alpha" is outdated, and isn't even used by wolf biologists anymore. Basically, the pack consists of mother, father, pups, siblings, and -occasionally- other wolves they take in. There's no "alpha," it's more of a family. You wouldn't call your mom an alpha female, now, would you? And you wouldn't classify your parents as the "alpha breeding pair," unless you're cray cray. Am I correct? c;

In a pack, there's a single breeding pair referred to as the "parents" and the rest of the pack is typically their offspring.

Those who came up with alpha theory based their observations on unrelated captive wolves, and have since retracted their statements on pack structure and replaced it with new, correct, studies. I'd like to see source on Wazaiyata's information though.
