So... recently I lost my first rat, Vodka. It was my own fault, I left the cage door open by accident and let both my girls get out. We found Coke under the fridge, but what shocked me was Vodka was no where near her when they normally are together no matter what. The worst thing of all is that we have a cat and I left the back door open. No sign of her yet... 4th day in.
Tommorrow, though I've not given up hope, my mum said she will hopefully let me get another - as Coke is very social and isn't acting herself without her sister. The new rat will not replace my baby </3 She was beautiful to me, and she will never be replaced... so the only reason I'd be getting another is to keep Coke company.
On top of this, on a good note, I did go the the store yesterday. To my surprise they had a cinnamon(I think) hooded male, and they don't normally sell them, he's very handsome with not many faults(coat-wise)... and since we have two cages I may be getting him and a new female. So that's the plus side, though it sounds a little cruel to my Vodka who's missing. It would be wonderful if I did get two new ones... as in the future I do want to breed my rats, and Coke would be receiving a companion as well.

I'm so sorry. I can relate to what you must be feeling right now. Losing ratties is so hard. I really, really hope you find Vodka, and if you don't then her memory will live on and your new babies will give you strength. They will never replace her, but they will be adorable and loving and great rats all the same.

I freaked out when I lost Nyx for five minutes, I can't imagine loosing one for that long. I'd probably just flip out and die. I really hope she shows up again. Sometimes they do that and act like nothing's happened.
If not, I hope Coke does well with the new baby (and actually, if they're not close in age, and you don't plan on keeping her with the boy, you might wanna get two girls, just so she won't be lonely if/when anything happens to Coke).

Hi, I'm new around here! (Although I joined a while ago...) And am happy to give advice although I'm not the best at that !
So I have been keeping rats for a while now and have had 6 over my life and now 3. They're all boys the ones I have at the moment are;
Bria- the oldest of the lot,also the friendliest, he is a black hooded male.
Snowy- the youngest, also the scaredy cat of the group (likes to nibble! Although it's more of a bite...) he is an albino male.
Smoky- beginning to be more confident, he is a blue.

Your babies sound absolutely adorable! :3 *slightly jealous* I wish more people I knew liked rats... but everyone thinks they're all diseased and horrid little creatures. It's sickening! They stereotype the best pets ever! I like to explain them as "little friendly dogs that live in cages." That's exactly what they're like

I'm considering getting 3 boys from the only local pet shop that sells rats around here. I would have them over the summer, and we're not going anywhere... but do ya'll think it would be realistic seeing as my own girls passed away just a couple of months ago? I don't know if I'm quite ready yet.

Im so sorry you lost vodka! Dont loose hope. One of my rats got out once. She was missing for almost a month and was in a house with 6 cats and a dog. After nearly a month i woke up to her on the cage trying to play with her sister. So dont loose hope! theres always a chance she'll show up!

It sounds a little strange but I think he was there for a purpose, to come home with me... and on the plus side we got him for £5 less than the normal price <3 He's beautiful and is getting along well with Coke, though we have to watch them when we have them together (outside the cage since they have their own) in case anything happens. Next week, we will check and see if there's any new females but for now I'm happy my girl is happy.
I have yet to name the boy but I think it might be Bunch or Jareth.

She said herself that she only let them play with each other and that she was getting new girls later. That's fine. (You should get another male for yours once your girl has her new friends. He's not going to be very happy if he doesn't have a cage mate.)
However, rats can get pregnant in a second. I would recommend that you let them sniff each other through the cage bars or something unless you want a lot of baby ratties from an accident.

Okay guys, I'm not an idiot. I watched them as they were playing and he never got a chance, as I was there the complete time plus he wasn't very confident in going up to her but instead she brought him some food not much did happen. If by accident she is pregnant, but I doubt it, we are prepared and know people who would like to own a baby (including I'd keep some) anyway PLUS my mother and I are enjoying the wait for us to breed them. Not only this but after her first litter we shall be probably be neutering them, as we don't want her overbred nor do we wish to have a thousand ratties seeing as the do not care for incest and they have large litters.
Also, the male was the only one in the store that was male as the store rarely sell them. I completely adore him, so will give him my attention as much as I can, as well as Coke. I'm also afraid of him being hurt by another male as he seems very skittish and submissive, despite his rather large size. If I seesomething wrong with him I will be able to buy him a friend, but for now I believe he is fine. I'm trusting my instincts here, so sue me if you must but you haven't seen him have you?

Seriously, each owner to their own yes? No one is right I think, and they are going to breed sometime anyway v.v; So I personally am not bothered if she is or isn't pregnant, she's certainly old enough to be bred now.

I wasn't implying you were an idiot- I was defending you. And I think you are being very responsible about the situation. I'm glad your rats are happy, and I really hope you end up finding Vodka.
