The chilly summer air put an air of exuberance on the citizens of Boston. It seemed that everywhere one would turn, there were merry people roaming the streets, little children playing at every street corner. While the weather was cold enough for some women to be wearing shawls, it seemed as though most everyone was simply glad that Winter was coming to its bitter end. Any temperature slightly warmer than the one they had been experienced over the past few months was received rather anxiously by all.

It seemed as though the only figure amongst the citizens was one that stood out of place anyway due to her appearance. Three years had treated Deidre well, and her beauty had blossomed even more. Her long black hair was still long, but it no longer lay straight as it had in its natural form. Instead, the bottoms had been curled with an iron, and she now wore makeup that before she had not ever even conceived of putting on - so much effort, for what? Deidre had never valued appearances. But many things had changed since that day when Walden had left the house, nearly three years ago. Her eyes held a sorrow that was long; one that had taken many years to take over her. There was no longer a smile on her face, and instead, a permanently hollow expression took her sad face.

It had taken her many months to finally succumb to the concept that her brother was not coming back. When Walden had been discovered as a Patriot, their father had sent him out of the house. The last word Deidre had heard about him was that he had been fighting skirmishes with his kind all along the coast. And even that had been a year ago. For all her knowledge, he could very well be dead. As good as dead, as her father had been keen to snarl.

With Walden gone, Deidre had been converted into the model child. Her adoptive parents had taken it upon themselves to put all their attention onto her, and to find her a suitable husband. After all, with one shame in the family, they needed to make it up by marrying off their other daughter, even if she was not biologically their own.

The man that held onto her arm like a vice was at least fifteen years her senior. While she was a beautiful woman, Deidre's mother had not been able to arrange for her daughter to marry a suitable nobleman her age, as no one had been particularly interested in joining ties with a woman who was not of European background. While she had grown up like any other girl of her standard, Deidre's appearance still clearly reminded everyone of her History. John Maxis came from a strong English family, a man who had spent his life at Sea, and had not been given the chance to marry up until now. He had welcomed the idea of marrying the young woman, though his argument had been repulsive; "a woman is a woman; they're only good for two things, anyway. Having and taking care of children, and taking care of me."

While they had only been married two short months, Deidre had grown to hate the man. He was harsh, disrespectful, and at times, vulgar. But her father had not seen anything but a surname, and had married his daughter off without a second thought. Since John resided in Boston, Deidre had had to live there as well, and had not returned to Lexington since.

He now marched her down the street at a fast pace, giving her no chance to pause at all to look at the scenery. The look on his face was an unpleasant one, upset to be outside in the first place. "We wouldn't have to be coming here in the first place, if you knew how to cook," he spat her way, bits of saliva flying out from his mouth as he hurled the words her way. He continued to grumble, and the words 'worthless' were clearly heard among them.

Deidre flinched slightly, shying away from the alcohol that stank his breath. But she said nothing, having learned early on that her husband disliked hearing her speak. In his mind, a woman should be seen, not heard. They were to keep to the shadows, and not bother him. Except, when he wanted her to.

John wrenched the door open to the tavern, pushing her inside before closing it behind them. As he turned to talk to the woman who was seating people, Deidre allowed her gaze to flit around the room, not really seeing as she looked at the faces. It wasn't until her gaze landed on two younger people that she suddenly froze, paling slightly. The sight of Catherina and Nathaniel - two figures from her old life - mortified her, as she was ashamed of what she had become. The wife of this monster, she did not want them to see. Instantly she looked down, praying desperately that she had not been seen as well.

Catherina was listening intently to what her brother was explaining to her. Still, she didn't know what to say to him. Her first reaction was to hug him because he had finally returned, but her other half wanted to start screaming and yelling at him. After a few minutes, both of her thoughts came together.

"So you just thought that you would leave without even sending me a letter!? And what in the world are you thinking about doing now!? Are you going to leave me just as you did before?!" she snapped at him, her voice raising a little. Luckily nobody was looking at them yet, so she kept her voice low.

"You're an idiot, you know that-"

"I want to take you with me, Catherina. I want to take you on my ship and keep you away from all of this chaos," Nathaniel interrupted. His words suddenly brought Catherina's voice to a halt, her eyes staring at him in shock. He wanted to take her away? Away from everything that they've been living with since they moved to the colonies?

Catherina didn't speak back, letting Nathaniel speak once more. "Our money from Father is gone. He cut off our inheritance from him. The only money we have left is from our work. The only we have left is that... ship..."

Nathaniel's voice began to trail off as his eyes diverted from his sister and towards the woman that had entered the tavern. It was Deidre Barnes, the woman that he had last seen (besides his sister) the day he left from Lexington. How in the world had she come to Boston? And who was the man that was looming behind her?

"Deidre...? Deidre Barnes?" he gasped, standing up from his chair. He took a few steps towards her, but kept his distance in case the man became overprotective of her.

"How in the world did you end up here?"

Deidre felt as if her entire world was crashing down on her. She felt a rush of emotions as Nathaniel suddenly recognized her - relief, determination, fear. Fear because she knew that no matter what she did, there was no way that he could help her. The only thing this man could do for her now was cause her trouble. If her husband discovered that this man knew his wife, he would certainly react violently. Certainly towards Nathaniel, but later inevitably towards her as well. But the damage was done, and Deidre could see that this was going to end violently regardless of what happened.

"Who's that?" John snarled, taking a step towards the two, eyeing them suspiciously. Before anyone could answer however, he turned on Deidre once more, grabbing onto the front of her gown, pulling her roughly towards him. "You know this man?" he demanded.

Deidre didn't reply, and instead just turned her dark eyes defiantly onto him. Her silence seemed to only anger the man further, and he let out a growl of rage. "I said, do you know this man?" he snarled, his fingers clenching onto her skin, pulling her closer.

A sharp intake of breath came from the woman, and she seemed to noticeably flinch away from him. It took her a moment to reply, but she knew that she had to. "No," she finally said, her voice dark as she uttered the single syllable. "No, I do not know him." It took all of her willpower to not look over towards Nathaniel and Catherina once more, but she knew that if she did, it would only make her doubt her decision to pretend otherwise.

(Ugh I just ran around the entire school looking for a teacher and I couldn't find them anywhere DX)

The single word that came from Deidre's mouth brought Nathaniel to a halt. This man was controlling her, and by the look of the two of them they were married. The man, however, coiled around her like a snake. There was something menacing about him, and it made Nathaniel's hands curl into fists. This wasn't how men were supposed to treat their wives. And she didn't even seem like she wanted to be with him.

"Catherina," Nathaniel called out, his eyes still gazing at both Deidre and her husband. "Tell the crew to get ready to set sail. I'll be out there in a few."

"You're about to do what I think you're going to, aren't you?" Catherina grumbled. She noticed a smirk appear on her brother's face, but didn't say anything back to her.

"Just don't get yourself beat up or killed, please. I don't want to drag your body out of this tavern." With that, Catherina passed by the two of them and disappeared outside, leaving Nathaniel alone with the two of them.

"Do you treat your mother like that? With respect, kindness, and dignity?" Nathaniel growled, his eyes narrowing towards the man named John. "Women need to have that respect, to which you don't give to Deidre whatsoever. Now let. Her. Go."

The look of fear seemed to intensify on Deidre's face as it became clear that Nathaniel was going to challenge her husband.  She wasn't exactly sure why the man seemed so disturbed by the scene in front of him - was it because of the action itself, or because he knew her personally? - but she didn't think that he understood the perilous position that she herself stood in. It would only result in violence later, something and you probably didn't realize.

As Nathaniel silently approached them, his eyes burning with inexplicable anger, Deidre felt her stomach turn. What was he thinking?  She tried to give him a look that pleaded for him to stop – for him to turn away pretend he had not seen anything. It would be her last chance to get out from the situation unscathed. But he didn't, of course - she hadnt really expected him to - and she found herself frozen, watching in terror as the man beside her let out a revolting laugh of anger. He was enjoying this chance, and was not really angry about the concept itself - that Nathaniel was only trying to protect his wife's honor. Instead, he simply wanted the chance to prove his strength, to engage in battle he so desperately craved.  It has been long since he had killed a man, even wounded one. The last few years have been spent peacefully, with no wars that he fought. He felt eager to once again feel the familiar rush of adrenaline that came from the heat of a battle.

"What do you know about women, boy?" he sneered, pushing Deidre back from him as he rolled up the sleeves of his shirt, as if preparing mentally for the soon to prevail. Deidre stumbled slightly, momentarily unbalanced by the rough push.

"Nathaniel, please no!" she pleaded suddenly, trying desperately to prevent the fight entirely.  The look on her face was utterly terrified, but she still tried to make him see that this was desperately not what she wanted. She was no longer the brave girl lived in Lexington, having broken broken down, year after year until her spirit had truly succumbed. "I'm fine – I really am," she said quickly

Anything else she would have said was cut off by John's angry growl.  "Silence," he snapped.  "So I see you do know this man?" Jealousy sparked in his eyes, as subconsciously John knew he could not compete for his wife's emotional attachment, as there was none. How could he compete with such a young, dashing man that seemed to have history with her?

Re: .:The Dawn of a Revolution:. (1x1)

A sly grin appeared on Nathaniel’s face as he listened to John speak to him with an angered tone. He was a violent man that was for sure. He was even taking his sleeves and rolling them up, thinking that he would be able to beat the younger man to a pulp.
The thing that Nathaniel had, however, was age. He was younger than him, giving him a bit of strength on his side. Not only that, but he had grown up with fighting almost all of his life. While it may have been more of fighting on ships, it was still using either weapons or his own two fists.

The fight, however, never was able to happen. One of Nathaniel’s crew members burst through the door, his head shifting towards his captain.

“Captain, the redcoats know we’re here. Your father’s ship, the HMS Vengeance is on the other side of the harbor,” he informed Nathaniel. “We need to leave as soon as possible.”

Nathaniel let out a sigh and nodded once. “Give me a minute, Marty. Make sure the rest of the crew is ready. Is Enos on board?”
“Aye, he is. He’s at the helm awaiting your arrival. We’ll save a place for the girl too. Anything you need us to do?” Marty asked, motioning for a few more of the sailors to enter through the door as well. It wasn’t all of his crew, but enough to start a fight.
“Create a distraction,” Nathaniel answered. At that moment, he pulled a pistol from a holster on his side and shot the chandelier above them, causing it to fall from the ceiling and land directly on John’s figure.

The crash caused almost the entire tavern to turn into chaos. The crew members took it as a sign for the distraction, and immediately started the fight. Men began to scream at each other for the sudden turmoil, and many of them had smashed a bottle over another’s head. It became a large bar fight; men were fighting men.

Nathaniel dashed through the fighting and ran directly towards Deidre. His crew fought against the rest of the men within the bar, and some of them kept John on the ground to let their captain escape. He suddenly grabbed Deidre around her waist and pulled her, pressing her body against his for safety.

“Trust me just this once, Deidre. I promise I’m going to get you out of this,” Nathaniel hissed into her ear. Suddenly, he picked her up into her arms and burst out the back door. His eyes caught sight of many Bostonians racing towards the tavern, wondering what on earth was going on.

Nathaniel’s ship, the Avenger, was already beginning to sail away from the docks. The crew members that had been in the bar fight had already gotten back on, leaving just Nathaniel and Deidre.

“Hold on!” he whispered to Deidre, before suddenly racing onto a few crates and jumping off the docks and flying through the air towards his ship. It almost appeared like they weren’t going to make it, but miraculously they both landed on the deck. It had been just in time, as the redcoats had run towards the ship and started to fire on them as they left port.

Nathaniel was left gasping with his back against the deck of the ship. He still had Deidre against his chest, but his arms were sprawled out on his side. “You okay…?” he gasped, lifting his head up so he could look at her.

Create a distraction.  The words echoed in Deidre's head as if her mind was a broken record.  She watched, powerless under her husband's grasp, as the words left Nathaniel's lips.  She knew in that moment he was trying to plan; that he expected to play the hero and attempt to save her from her prison. This concept however, did not bring joy nor relief. Instead, Deidre just felt terrified. Did Nathaniel not understand that this was impossible battle to fight? No matter what he tried, Deidre belonged to John. She was his wife, and that was nothing that she could ever change in the society in a sick, twisted way… She belonged to him - would always belong to him. But before she could try to get the words across to Nathaniel, he had already taken action.

It was a whirlwind of action. Before Deidre registered what was going on, Nathaniel had taken out a pistol from his pocket, and had shot a hole into the ceiling of the tavern. Chandelier came crashing down on to John's head, and it was only because she was standing a few feet away from him that Deidre herself did not get smashed as John did.  Her husband fell unconscious, his head having been impacted by the heavy metal.  The rest of the bar became chaos, everyone running and some women screaming. Teacher didn't scream however, knowing perfectly well that there was nothing screaming could accomplish.  This mess was for her cause; Nathaniel was doing this to try and help her. And despite small twinge of relief she felt, the intellectual side of her prevailed, and Deidre was unable to even smile at Nathaniel as he approached.

She was suddenly mute as he grabbed hold of her, tearing her away from her captor.  Deidre saw John's unconscious form as the tavern door swung shut behind her, and she was very suddenly hit in the face with her new found freedom - which also happened to her new life of condemned solitude. Because she was sure, that after this, there was no way she would be accepted into civil society again. Running away from your husband would even be shameful to her own parents to live with. What would they think now? With Walden already gone to join the patriots this would be yet another blow for them to take.

They were running now; Nathaniel pulled her along roughly down the road, not taking into consideration how grueling the run was for her. She was injured – not physically, mentally.  It would take her many days to recover, after all that she had been through john. This was yet another thing to add to her list of distressed worries.

She didn't try to speak, and Nathaniel didn't direct a word towards her as they ran. In a way, Deidre was glad that he didn't, as she felt to appalled by what happened to even begin to put your thoughts into words.

It was only when he took a flying leap - carrying her weight effortlessly - onto the ship, that she made her first sound. It was a small scream, and only when she felt her body slam unceremoniously into the hard wood floor, they just realized how fast her heart had been beating this whole time.  He then asked her if she was alright, to which she felt the strong urge to take in an utterly different manner than he had even meant.

Deidre pulled herself away from him with some effort, and steadied herself against the railing.  "Am I okay?!" she repeated, her voice sounding scandalized.  "How dare you do this to me, Nathaniel Devol.  Did you not get the point I was trying to get across to, or did you just want to play the hero so badly that you were blind to my own wishes?"  She was being unreasonable, and although deep down she knew it, Deidre felt too shaken up by the realization of exile to think things through.  Instead, the easier option was to vent her anger on Nathaniel. He was an easy victim for that.

She had tears welling in her eyes; tears that had been building up for months now.  And although Deidre has never been one to cry, in this moment she saw no other alternative.  After so many months, she was so broken that the littlest thing managed to set her off. She remembered that night when she had last seen this man, when she hadn't had had walden, and her life been normal. I have been a year ago at least, probably more. But ever since that day, she had no contact with happiness, and in fact had had the parallel opposite.

Without another word, the girl sank to her knees, her face buried in her hands. Her body trembled with every wracked sobs, her breaths coming out painfully. She wasn't exactly sure why she was crying, but instead told herself that it was the prospect of being in exile scared her most. The sheer truth however, was that she was crying for every little thing that happened during that timespan of a year.  Life had been cruel to her, in ways that someone like Nathaniel probably would never even know.

(as I warned you before, I wrote this with my iPads speech... XD Forgive me for any stupid errors that I didn't catch, and feel free to point them out or edit out the obvious ones if they bother you lol... I will be writing my replies like this for a while, until my arms are back to normal.  Lol yay, happy to be roleplaying again, though!!)

Nathaniel hadn't the slightest clue how to react when Deidre finally let loose all of her pain and anger at him. Her screams and yells left him as still as a statue, staring at her without a word coming out his mouth. What was he to say to her? He had thought that she would want to leave her horrible life with that husband of hers.

After watching her fall to her knees, Nathaniel took a few steps across the deck and bent down in front of her. He wasn't sure is he should even place a hand on her, so instead he stayed at least a foot away with his hands on his knees.

"Hey, I only thought there would be a way to help. I know you haven't had... well, the best years..." Nathaniel paused for a moment, finding the right words to say to her. He wasn't completely sure how to even keep her from crying. "Come on, I'll take you to my quarters so you can be alone if you want..."

He stood up and held out a hand for her, hoping that maybe she would at least take it. However, the sound of a voice from the helm caused him to lift his head. It was Catherina, her clothing haven't switched to that of a sailor. Her hair was down, but she wore a tricorn hat that she had probably stolen from Nathaniel's quarters.

"Hey! Nathan! Sorry to interrupt but we have a ship coming after us! English flag! They're readying the guns and we need to get out of here fast!" Catherina called out, standing next to one of the sailors that was steering the ship.

Nathaniel inwardly cursed to himself and gently took Deidre's arm and lifted her up, pushing her rather quickly into his quarters under the helm. "So sorry, but please stay in here for the time being and let me save my ship and crew... and you, for that matter." He smirked at the last bit but didn't say anymore, and locked the doors behind him to keep her from getting out.

Back on the deck, Nathaniel had already begun shouting orders at the crew. Luckily the wind was on their side, and the sails had been lowered to sail with the wind. His ship was fast, but he wasn't sure if the British ship would be faster. It was a frigate, and normally frigates would be faster than his ship of the line. It would have to depend on both luck and strategy to avoid a battle at sea.

(Ugh this is such a fail it shows how little I've written lately |D)

Nathaniel seemed awkward as he attempted to comfort her, and Deidre sensed it like a prick in her finger. She shied away from him, turning her gaze so that he would not see the tears that had streamed freely down her cheeks. Of course he thought that he had been doing her aid by saving her. And although deep down she knew that he had helped, she refused to admit it. In that moment, she just wanted to blame someone for her unhappiness, and Nathaniel - although completely innocent - would serve her as a suitable victim.

As he suddenly began to push her roughly down towards the inner parts of the ship, Deidre didn't fight his grasp. She understood that this was of importance, and that they were truly in danger. But as he told her that this was to save her, she couldn't help but narrow her eyes. After having been mistreated for so long by a man, she knew that it would take her a long time to finally trust another.

( I'll include walden in my next post if the ship catches up to them! 8D Sorry for the fail post lol...

Re: .:The Dawn of a Revolution:. (1x1)

Postby Captain Kaycee » Tue May 28, 2013 12:08 pm

The entire deck of the ship was littered with sailors running around. Many of them were already getting the guns ready on either side, with at least three to four men simply working on one cannon to get it fire-ready. With each passing moment the ship behind them were getting closer to closer. Tensions were rising within each sailor, as well as the captain himself.

Nathaniel stood up on the helm with his arms folded, noticing that Catherina was already grabbing rifles and handing them out to the crew who didn't have a weapon already. He knew that the ship battle would be inevitable; the enemy ship was already gaining on them. His only option was to prove that his ship was the greater of the two.

"Half-sail men! Starboard side, get ready to fire! Hold until you hear my order!" he yelled across the deck, watching as the other men continued below deck to repeat his commands. His eyes glanced back to see the other ship still gaining him, yet he had one or two tricks up his sleeve. He hadn't been given the title of the British Royal Navy for nothing, even if he had abandoned them.

His eyes turned back up tot he man at the wheel. "Turn to the starboard side! Now!" he shouted at the man, watching as he quickly turned the wheel and brought them right in the firing line of the enemy vessel.

Then, with one final shout, Nathaniel lowered his hand.

"Fire!"
