Hey, quick question, what's Divergent about? Everyone's talking about it, but I still haven't read it.

Whtas 1984? I know its a book........whats it about?

It's a sci-fi novel written sometime in the late forties, and it tells about life in 1984. In this world, socialism and communism have taken over the entire world. Three major nations rule, Oceania, Eurasia, and I forget the other one. The gov't controls every part of life; even thoughts. I didn't describe it too well, but it's an excellent book.

The entire point of the book is that freedom of thought is the only freedom. The protagonist dares to think independently, and that leads him to committing various other crimes. In the end, though, he's only being punished for "thoughtcrime", or for thinking of banned topics. They break his spirit and brainwash him, which even after various tortures and other punishments, is the only way he actually loses.
The setting is London in Eurasia, though there's some debate on whether or not other countries actually exist. The "war" going on with the bombings in the cities, some people believe, are one of the government's many tricks to convince the people that they need the Party. Notice that no one ever actually joins the army in the book, nor do any veterans ever return. The entire backdrop of the story is relatively unimportant, which is rare for a novel of this quality.

Much better explanation than mine! It's an excellent book, however, and it really causes some excellent thought. Pretty much the entire population is completely deluded into believing whatever the government says, without question.

I got a few books from the library. I checked out Crossed, the second book in the Bartimaeus series, & Scorpion run. All looked so good, and they finally had all three at the same time so I had to take them all home! C:

Boy do I love the library. Has anyone read Scorpion run?

Yeah, that's right, but (if my memory is correct), it wasn't published until after his death in 1949.

Well, the humans are organised in 5 factions, based on their personality and beliefs. Abnegation(the Selfless), Erudite(the Intelligent), Amity(the peaceful), Candor(the Honest) and Dauntless(the Brave). Once they get 16, children choose in which faction they wish to be: the one where they were born, or one of the others. The have to go through an initiation trial to be accepted to the faction -if they don't the will be without faction, poor and abandoned. Beatrice belongs to the Abnegation faction and lives with her parents and brother. She is supposed to be selfless and only care about the others but Beatrice cannot cope with it, she can't imagine leaving a life like this. Every year, the sixteen-year-olds have to take an aptitude test, which determines the faction each is most suited for. The test is followed by a Choosing Ceremony, in which each person must decide which faction they would reside in for the rest of their lives, living under the guideline of "Faction Before Blood." Beatrice's test results show that she is a Divergent. She isn't suited only in one faction but three: Erudite, Abnegation, and Dauntless. She have to choose in which one she's going to be and when she does, she has to go through an initiation trial and try to become her new self "Tris", as she renamed herself.

I highly recommend it! It's one of my favorite books. The characters are so... real. Raw. I don't know. It gave me chills!
