Depends I'd he's heavily impacted by this lusus or not. I personally use part of their sign, ie: nepeta used cat puns because she's a leo and her cat lusus. Have something match with his/her sign.

I hear Hydra and I think of some scary snake-dragon-thing... so, perhaps, have 'o' and 'O' with a little '~' after them, like a little snake...? Hush I'm stupid. xP
Perhaps, if he's as serious as you say, when people doubt his seriousness or something, he gets irritated, causing his speech to sort of sPIKE at certAIN times, either like his voice is breaking or he's adding emphasis to a point...

I like the emphisis part, ill think about the other though, the ~ looks a bit too whimsical for such a serious ship captian to be.
