The sparks fluttered and danced in the wind. It was quiet, yet traumatizing at the same time. The small village where Kina lived was engulfed in red flames, hungrily devouring all that lay in their way. Her family had been lost in the flames, and the young Kia refused to leave no matter how dangerous or foolish it was, she had to find them. Her very last breath was lost in the silence and everything she ever loved fell apart right before her eyes. She couldn't just leave her family... Could she?
Many hours before when all remained peaceful...
It was a glorious summers day and the young Kia had waded out by the pond along the end of camp and was splashing her feet in the water and watching her reflection ripple in the small waves. She smiled, but only for a second. There was no value in life, and no one liked Kina, was what she thought, and she had been feeling that way recently. All the support she had was her family, who had always stood by her side. What was the point in smiling? She had no significant purpose in life. She made no difference to the world.
That night Kina stared at the sky in wonder as the northern lights danced and laced across the gloomy night. The colors spun in an array of colors ranging from vibrant red to a smooth blue and Kina watched in pure awe. It was the most amazing thing she has ever seen before, it was almost unreal and mystical.. Thats not the word.. She thought.. Enchanting was more so what it seemed to be. Kina sighed and lay her head down to rest. Her eyes began to droop and she fell into a dark and silent slumber.
A loud noise erupted from the clearing and awoke the young Kia. She tilted her head and looked around the forest.. 'Is that burning ashes I smell?' Kina slowly got to her feet and lifted her head and sniffed the air. Half asleep she walked towards it not knowing any better. Kina stared in horror as the flames grew and swallowed up the forest in one instant. Immediately the Kia thought to save her family, the only ones who mattered in her life.
She rushed out into the clearing and called out to them, only to get no response. Kina felt tears trickling down the side of her face and she shook her head and refused to give up. She ran headlong into the flames in search of her family. The shock and fright of it all made Kina forget of the searing pain from the flames. Everywhere she looked she could not find them, eventually Kina just dropped onto the grass. She could not hide her emotions any longer, she cried out 'Why, why.. Why!' over and over again but nothing ceased, nothing happened and no one came to make it all stop. In the back of her mind she was half expecting her family to come and comfort her, but no one came and no one comforted her. Why would you take away the only ones who matter to me, why is fate so cruel? she thought bitterly. Please... Just stop.. Stop it.. She whispered. Enough... As she did so, the flames seemed to subside, was this her imagination or were they finally ceasing? Kina got up from where she lay and she yelled at the flames to disperse, and in that instant the flames were nothing but cinders that would only flicker and burn out in mere seconds. Kina looked in surprise at what just happened. Did.. Did I control those flames? She thought. No.. No I couldn't have. A yell erupted from the clearing and broke Kina away from her thoughts, it was her family and they were injured a bit, but they were all there. Kina broke into a uncontrolled sob and ran to her family. ' I- I thought,' Kina begain, and in that moment her mother hugged her and told her it was okay. Kina never really did completely comprehend what happened that day, but ever since then, she has valued her family more than anything and she realizes how lucky she really is. Kina is now going to live her life to the fullest, along side her parents and siblings of course, and she will soon learn how to put her 'gift' to good use.

I’ve had a dream… Of course… Dreaming is normal, everyone has dreams every now and then during those dark nights. It would be quite sad if there were no such things as “dreams”, each and every night would be so empty and alone without them. However, that dream of mine is what I think may be different compared to the dreams others have. It was always the same dream, night after night. It was a dream that first filled me with fear, but later filled me with the desire to help those in need of help; a dream filled with warmth and fire.
My dreams of flames stayed with me for one year, always the same and always returning to me each and every night. It was early September, the summer had ended but the heat that each morning brought with it had yet to make room for the cooler weather belonging to the winter. It was at that time all of my dreams disappeared… I couldn’t dream at all any longer… But that nothingness at night didn’t last for long, because one September night I awoke by hearing the screams from the Kia family living on the same mountain as my own family did back then. My mother hushed my younger brother who had started to cry because of the sudden noise and told me to stay inside while our father went outside to see what was going on. When he came inside again I couldn’t tell exactly how he looked, but judging by his voice - he was worried. I had become too distracted by the warm light that made its way into our cave to hear what they said. As I was about to go outside, to find out what caused that beautiful light, my father grabbed hold of me and dragged me the other way.
“No! Father, let me go, it’s calling for me!” those were the exact words I said without thinking. That light, it was calling for me.
Both my parents had been staring at me for a short instance, before ignoring it. I couldn’t help it, but in order to get loose from my father I bit him and as I had planned his grip around me loosened and I was able to get free.
“Kiukiu!” they had been calling my name as I started to run towards the cave’s opening where the light waited patiently for my arrival. To my own regret I could hear my father coming running after me, and since he was faster me he was able to catch up to me all too soon.
“Kiukiu, it’s dangerous out there, we have to get out of here through the caverns below the mountain…” he said it as he stepped in front of me, making me bump right into him and falling back on my rump.
“But it’s calling for me… Father please, I have to go to it. It’s so sad; it doesn’t want to hurt the others. It wants my help, so please let me help it…” I said, with a saddened voice.
“What is calling for you…?”
“I’m sorry, but I have to go to it!” as I had said that I managed to get pass him and get out of the cave.
When I stepped outside the cave I faced the flames that looked so much like the ones from my dream. It wasn’t the same ones, but they all seemed so sad. Before my father could catch hold of me again I started to run towards my neighbours cave. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to reach it, because the flames suddenly surrounded me and I was cornered against a cliff.
“You asked me to help you, that you did not want to hurt anyone… I am here now… So please let me help you…” I said, with a low voice. “Please don’t hurt anyone here on this mountain… It’s my home…”
The flames around me still drew closer, but I was not afraid, because I couldn’t feel any pain from them as they started to touch my fur. I stepped out from the cliff so my paw where the lava stone were attached would be engulfed by the flames. Slowly I closed my eyes and felt the warmth rushing into me and how my lava stone became rather hot.
After that I must have lost my consciousness, because I don’t remember what happened between that point and to the moment when my family and friends all where standing around me and the flames were all gone… With the only trace of my once black and red lava stone who had turned pure red and glowed like a flame… When I received my feathers soon after, they too started to glow like flames… I'm filled with flames...
A grand total of exactly 800 words.
