I think the way people are getting them is by using a number generator to give them a number between 1 and 649. The number you get is your spirit pokemon

Oh gosh, I'm sorry! Yeah, it is hard if you're not active every day. D: I've got a 59.6% chance of getting it, I could raise that number up today....

Also, does the level of a Pokémon affect the breeding? Like, my Winter Turtwig is level 31 at the moment, but my Ditto is level 14. Is it possible that the breeding couples need to be around the same level? (Yes, someone gifted me a Ditto yesterday EEEP I AM SO HAPPY! ;W;)

They don't have to be around the same level, but there will be more of a chance that they will produce eggs if they are.
