This is a species I created, and I do like them, but Im not brilliant with body designs.
I think they would be dark based with at least one neon accent.
I imagined them originally as Dream-stalkers, their mouth is like an abyss that swallows dreams that
pass them by.
Something like that.

Species Name: Dremora (dray-more-uh) stalkers
Idea for a
background?: Flames and a night background, depending on how it is made.
The purpose of the species: Dremora stalkers are the ones that give people nightmares. They only come out at night or when its a stormy day and there is a fire. Dremoras love fire, fear, and lust. They feed of fear and give fear. They pick only one person to be their owner and once they are owned that person may not be touched or have fear put in them by another dremora, or the dremora will be killed. Dremoras are very loyal and protective to their owners and will give up their life for them. Common Dremora stalkers have black at the tip of there tails or on their coat. The commons are usually black and have neon manes. Uncommon Dremora stalkers have just dark colored pelts of different sorts with a lighter neon manes. And last is rare, the rare have bright colored coats and a Japanese marking on their side.
Male Dremora stalker have brighter colored front legs to atract the females.
Female Dremora have three bright striped on their tail, the brighter it is the more powerful they are.
Dremora are made from black holes, there are never baby Dremoras. They can get to be as big as a horse.

Species Name: Daemon Canis (DC's For short c:)
Idea for a background?:
Depending upon the particular element for that beast in itself, a background generally flame-type, but with matching colors (Kind of like, Pokemon types... but-- the 'main' type of the DC is always Fire, so it might be Poison/Fire. Which doesn't have much to do with the beast aside from a dragon like abilty for breath/ and or smoke...) So--- Flame like backgrounds in matching colors :3 Or, some type of scenery-- as these will be beasts of the night, it might be a mountainside, or a starry night sky... somewhere, dark-- but beautiful.
The purpose of the species:
The purpose of these species will be feeders or sorrows. Be that, fear, anger, or even lust in it's most greedy state. They shall have a sort of mind-control ability, to cause other creatures to sort of Hallucinate, thus-- creating the emotions of which the DC's feed off of. But, as sort of a perk, these creatures can be 'tamed' and kept as a sort of pet, though, they are mischievous, and will always seeks to create situations of which give them a chance to feed off sorrow and sadness c:
Extra bit: They are fiercely loyal, if given a chance- but have 'stages' as they will breed, but breeding is not a full-life thing, up until their babies are old enough to leave they will protect their mates with their life... (As, they will protect their 'master' with their life, kind of like the big-brother effect.. of "Only I can cause you pain, if anyone else does.. they are deadddd."_ As far as looks go:
Common: Base coat Black/Brown/Darkblue- with 'tipped' lighter color coordinating with their 'second element"
Uncommon: Light base/ with dark 'tips' (May or may not be element-less..(Aside from fire)
Rare: winged/Horns--- color variations not typical of the species.
Also: As you said, Neon accents are common-- throughout all rarities of DC's
