Taeru is definitely a deer, just suits her dramatic & flinchy personality.

Alesana is a quiet, small city/town kind of girl, I can imagine her being ina little click and having her favorite 'hang out' place.
And Taeru lives in Japan, in a somewhat busy and packed city, but her house is a little futher away with lots of fields and dense woods where it's easy to get lost (and as someof you may know already, she did once get lost for a long while there).
