My heart stops and I feel a sickening wave of nausea wash over me. "Excuse me, Miss Eleanor? Is there a reason?"
Eleanor smirks, that grin getting bigger by the second and her buggy eyes sparkle with laughter. "Find out for yourself, won't you!" she snickers, turning away and strutting down the stairs like a queen.
I hesitate and press my hands together, saying a silent prayer and puching my diary farther out of sight. I open the door to the light of the world downstairs, but everything seems to become darker.
I step slowly down the stairs, dreading each waiting moment. Is it the pans? Is Master Barker afraid I've damaged them? Or is it... something else?
Soon I can see the Barker family sitting in a circle and speaking urgently. "They're taking the servants!" Who are they? "No one knows where they take the servants, but they're never heard of again and you have to buy more!" Where? Where are the cat servants going?
Master Barker sees my face appear around the corner and motions for silence. "We have decided that you deserve a... reward... for all of your hard work. You will no longer be sent to town to do errands."
Silence. Hm. I suppose that could be both good and bad.
"In fact, you will not be allowed out of the house."
