appearance wrote:rose is nothing special when it comes to looks. she has long waist-length brown hair that she literally does nothing with. it's actually very nice hair. rather thick, it cascades over rose's shoulder in thick waves that knot often if she doesn't brush it daily. rose has never really considered getting her hair cut short; she's used to it the way it is right now. besides, although rose does not take good care of it by any definition, her hair is one of her best features. most of the time it just sits there, but for the games and other work-related activities, rose plans to put it in a low ponytail to keep it out of her face. rose's brown eyes have perfect vision, which is really a blessing. in the games it's not like your enemies will go easy on you if your glasses are dirty. they say eyes are the windows to the soul, and that's certainly true in rose's case. she finds it very hard to keep her emotions from her eyes, although she often manages to keep a straight face. with a finely formed nose and lightly sprinkled with freckles, rose's face greatly resembles that of her mother, which is rather a source of pain for her. but it's also good - they say her mother was beautiful, once. maybe [rose hopes this is the case] she will grown well into her looks, and maybe turn out a great beauty. but that simply doesn't seem likely right now. rose is not clumsy, but she does not have her mother's natural grace. of course, some of that is due to the fact that rose just grew quite a bit, and is still doing so. at her barefoot height of five foot eight, rose tends to tower above the other female tributes, and thus is seen as more of a threat. for obvious reasons that's not good. but it is accurate. rose does have a bit of a physical advantage when it comes to this sort of thing, knowing self-defense and all that. her weight is normal for her height, somewhere around 147 pounds. nothing else is really worth mentioning, except for maybe that rose has big feet, size eleven.
history wrote:rose had an odd upbringing, the daughter of a peacekeeper and a butcher. her mother, jennifer, was the peacekeeper. she didn't realize that she was going to have rose, or that her child's father would be the young butcher whose father had just died, leaving him the shop. it came as a blow to all of them when the illegitimate baby was discovered. desperate to keep up her reputation as a cold-hearted peacekeeper, jennifer lawson married david taylor, the butcher. however this did not keep her her job. once jennifer's superiors discovered that she was married, and with child, they instantly fired her. the woman was left in district eight as punishment. jennifer has never gotten over her fall from grace, and blamed her daughter for it. little rose was never allowed to call her mother "mama" or "mommy" or even "mother". instead, the most strictly enforced rule in the household was that rose's mother was jennifer. only jennifer. the mother hated her daughter with a burning passion, but ended up spending a lot more time woth her then she would have liked. since jennifer was now your typical housewife she had to stay at home and take care of her only daughter. they did not grow to like each other, or anything of the sort. little rose wondered why her mother did not like her, didn't even want to be near her, something she had learned from an early age. everyone else's parents spent time with them frolicking outdoors. jennifer taught her daughter how to defend herself, using the skills she herself had learned as a peacekeeper. rose was eager to learn, hoping that maybe that would bring her and her mother closer together. but it didn't. jennifer only taught her daughter of such things because she had a reputation to uphold - at least she thought she did. the ex-peacekeeper figured that if this daughter she so disliked became an enforcer like her, some of that honor would be indirectly restored upon herself. so jennifer thrust herself into the work of training her daughter in the arts. mostly fighting, true, something that rose was just okay at as she grew older and clumsier; but also the psychological tricks. how to throw your opponent off-balance with just a few words. how to take note of any weaknesses and use them, even if that is pushing an innocent bystander off a cliff. and rose never learned that this was wrong. however, the girl's relationship with her father the butcher was much different. rose opened up around the kindly man, who loved his wife unconditionally even if she did not return the feeling. they didn't spend quite as much time together as the mother-daughter pair, but what little they did was enjoyed. as rose grew older - and subsequently worse at her mother's teachings - she ended up in the shop a lot, helping her father with the cuts. unlike most girls her age rose didn't mind blood. and so her father began to quietly hope that if his daughter didn't end up a peacekeeper, she might take over his livelihood, something that had been in the family for as long as anyone could remember. so he taught the girl aout knives. not in depth, mind you, and not so that she knew how to use them as weapons per se. but rose could fix knives, sharpen them, perform some menial tricks. of course now, now that she's in the games, some of these childhood skills might be of some use.
