Personally, for my rats' beddings, we use old cloths. They are like pillow-case fabric basically, and when we clean the cages (I also have a Ferret Nation cage) we just take the bedding out and wash it alone in the washer and dryer. You could use a variety of things, really. Mine like newspaper under the fabric to tear up. You could browse the available beddings in your local pet store and give those a try, just do some research and make sure it won't disturb your rat's nose or give them problems. Good luck!

Thanks for that, Charms!

My dad tends to shred a bunch of unimportant papers. They do have ink on them, just normal computer ink. Will this affect them? And would it be better to mix it with some Carefresh? Will the trays in the FN cage be tall enough to keep bedding in?
previously luminescent., just decided to change it up a bit! ^.^if you get the reference, you're a fantastic human c:

I wouldn't use fabrics or cloths for bedding as rats have been know to get stray pieces of strings from cloths tangled around toes or hands and feet. As the rat struggles to free itself it pulls the string tighter and tighter cutting of circulation to that area. This eventually leads to that toe or paw getting cut off or falling off from the string cutting off the circulation and it doesn't take long for the toe or paw to fall off, so you might not realize what's happening until it too late. I would stick to carefresh, which is better for your rats upper respiratory and has less oder than most of the wood chip bedding. Plus it isn't that expensive at your local pet store if you buy in bulk. I hope this helps you guys out a little bit when looking for bedding for your little ratties. ^^

We are well aware of this caution at my house, but the rats are in a very busy part of the house so we always have sight of them. I forgot to mention that to Luminescent, though. Mine actually don't munch on the fabric, so we haven't run into this problem. But thanks for including that, I would feel bad if she got fabric bedding and then her rats got tangled up in it! ^^;

Well, my ratties seem to enjoy eating fleece. -_- I Think I might try cutting and scoring coroplast and making some higher bases for some bedding. Thanks anyways, Charms! :3
SunShy, those 6 are so cute! I love Riley, Chelsae and Daphne, so cute!! ^^

Yeah, my whole room is carpeted so I don't think that'll work very well. I think I'll try shredded newspaper for now but if I
used a different paper based pellet, would that work? They are already mostly littertrained with rabbit pellets.
Oh. My. Gosh. I think I'm legitamitly dying from cuteness. <3 Tilly, while I climbed into bed and was writing in my journal and actually, as I type this, is resting her chin on the edge of the cage, plopped down all comfy, just watching me. Gah, those dumbo ears are irresistable too! :'3
