I don't believe that's entirely true. There have been many instances of pets moving down in rarity other than 12/18, for example, the thunderstorm cat from November was uncommon when its rarity came out, went down to common for about a month, and is now uncommon again. (and that can't have been because of rereleases because 2012 pets don't get rereleased.)

I'm not positive about that particular bwolf, though. I can't remember what rarity it used to be, but if it went down, it will probably go up again soon.

That's probably because he got the rarity before all the pets were grown up (not everyone adopts pets in the first few days of month, a lot of pets are adopted later), so at first they got the "uncommon" label, but then others grew up, there were more cats in circulation and they turned to be common after next update. The amount of the late-growers weren't big enough to keep this cat common for a long time though, that's why it turned back to uncommon after some time; same situation with other pets that go down in rarity during the year =)

Nope, it was always a common ^^ I have their rarity sorted, and I kinda have to disagree with the 18th December thing, that's not entirely true c: Some pets do go down in rarity in the middle of months.

Then it turned common.
Last rarity change it was back to uncommon.

Could it possibly have anything to do with how many are in 'circulation'? Like someone had a massive hoard and then let the cats go so they dropped temporarily before they were snatched back up ? Or am I messing up my understanding of it?

rarity is how many pets on the site vs how many users there are. You're thinking of demand.

My guess would be is that it is due to rarities not being affected by inactive users. ^.^ perhaps a bunch of users who happened to have a lot of that cat came back to CS, which brought it down to common even though it was not a rerelease.
