Since the 'Neither' option was available, I chosed it. Something else must have come before both of them.
If I had to choose between the egg and chicken It's the egg. Dinosaurs, you know. People have already said that.
(May or may not have been posted earlier, but I think I should post what I have in mind.)

I'd say the egg. Two dinosaurs/early birds probably somehow mated and made the first chicken.

I was going to say dinosaur, but that's obviously been taken care of. Either way, chickens descended from other birds, which also layed eggs. The first chicken to genetically be a chicken would have been laid in an egg, so chicken would have hatched from the egg. Therefore, the egg came first. (Unless chickens were spliced, and then it's possible that an embryo could have been raised -somehow- outside of an egg, but I'm not sure that our technology is this great even today.)

On further inspection of the original post, I'm switching my answer to the chicken. Because the first chicken's mother was another species and not a chicken, her DNA would produce the egg, but the chicken would develop in the non-chicken egg that was formed by the mother bird's body. The DNA of the chicken would be inside the egg, but would not include the egg. The chicken would hatch from the non-chicken egg and would then lay the first chicken eggs later in its life. The chicken came first.

So you're saying the name of an egg depends on the species of the mother, not the DNA inside?
