It would actually be sort of neat if all of the element bearers became alicorns, albeit it would have to be near the end of FiM, or else it would mess with the possible storylines.

Well, they make up the majority of the fandom, which is constantly growing, so obviously they aren't scaring people off like crazy. Some people are more invested in things than others, and some people display this differently than others.
