----The only sounds that could be heard were the morning call of a lark and the droning buzz of cicadas. As usual the ever ambitious, Asagai, was already awake. He always woke early to watch the sun as it ascended over the tops of the evergreen trees and the snowcapped mountains. The way the light set the morning sky a flame with burst of colors ranging from yellow to green to purple. The way the light broke into rays of light through the morning mist and trees. When he was lucky he’d spot the hint of a rainbow in the morning air. Asagai was always a Romantic. He saw the beauty in the world, and got depressed when it was gone. On limber hooves, Asagai trotted through the grass towards his friend, Nitika, who slept soundly curled against her mother’s side. The young colt fancied the filly and was always eager to impress her. Smiling to himself he tugged at the ear of his friend. “Niti, wake up.” He crooned softly.
“I’m tired,” the yellow dun filly complained, opening a single green eye to look at the colt that pestered her. “Leave me be. It’s too early.” She curled up tighter trying to find sleep once again.
Never the one to give up, Asagai nipped her. “Come on…” he whined, “You promised and a promise is a promise.” He snorted softly.
With a sigh of defeat Nitika rose to her feet. “Fine, but only because I can’t sleep,” she said shaking out her mane.Feeling very triumphant Asagai led her off towards the river. He wanted to show her the blossoms that grew there. He tried to later in the day, but a horrid yearling named Orison made a point to him that Nitika was ‘his’ by tromping over them, smashing them to bits.

----It wasn’t long before the two reached the river side. Lifting his head into the air Asagai looked across the river. Finally, he spotted the tiny, sweet smelling blossoms that he wanted to show her. “There!” he whinnied gaily, “All we have to do is cross the river! Come on Niti!”
Looking down at the water in front of her then back up at Asagai, Nitika asked her hesitantly as this was obviously important to him, “Asa… the water’s white with rapids… are you sure this is a good idea?”
Asagai glanced at the water and snorted dismissively. “Yeah! Of course! See that rick right there in the middle of the river? Just jump over onto it then onto the other bank. Piece of cake,” he told her cockily. His tail flicked from side to side and he looked at the stone in concentration.
“Alright Asagai… just don’t hurt yourself…” Nitika told him softly concerned for her friend.
“Don’t worry about me Niti,” Asagai murmured without looking at her. “I’ll be fine.”

----Ears back against his head, eyes narrowed in concentration Asagai took a running start towards the rock. With carful precision he leapt into the air. He didn’t think once about what he was doing and what the consequences might be. He landed on the rock. Looking back at Nitika, Asagai smiled triumphantly. Just then something in the river rumbled and shook the rock. Asagai’s hooves slipped on the rock and he tumbled into the river. The last thing he saw was the fear in Nitika’s beautiful green eyes before he was sucked under and his head hit the river bottom, hard.
----When Asagai woke someone was licking his face. He head hurt something awful and the light stung his eyes. The bones in his neck popped as he looked up at the Equid above him. She had the most beautiful green eyes and yellow dun pelt, he thought. Grunting softly he rolled over. With the mare’s help he stood on shaky legs. “Wha- what happened?” he asked the unknown mare.
“Oh Asagai! I’m glad you’re alright!” the mare cried throwing herself at him making him double take. “You went over the falls and I was so scared! I didn’t know what to do! I didn’t know if you were dead!”
Asagai watched her. Who was this mare and why was she so frantic over his existence? “Uh… who are you again?” he asked confused.
Nitika looked at him. Stuttering, “You don’t know who I am? We’ve been best friends since forever.”
The stallion shook his head. If there weren’t tears streaming down the mare’s face there were now. Asagai lowered his head. He felt terrible and didn’t know what he could do to comfort her. So he just ran. And ran. And ran. And ran. Till he could run no more. He had to get away from here. A new start. Yes a new start without any stranger yet familiar mares to upset. That’s what Asagai was after now, but he’d never ever forget that heartbroken mare at the bottom of the waterfall. Never.
