When her younger sister's name is drawn as female tribute, Katniss volunteers herself instead to save her sister's life. She then must compete in the Hunger Games where twenty four children must fight to the death. The winner is showered in endless riches. Katniss' weapon of choice is a bow and arrow. She eventually grows close to Peeta, the male tribute from the same district. Later, he gives her a pearl, which she keeps with her from then on.
