The Stealer, feeling the strength of Sombra's paw on his shoulder, knew there was only one course of action to take, though he woud have preferred not to do it. He didn't have much time. A few seconds and the witch's spell would be complete. He would be unable to move even if he wanted to.
He let himself go limp under Sombra's paw, appearing to give up. He gave it a second or so, then shifted back into the smaller form of a man, and in the small amount of space left between the paw and him, he slipped out and crouched a few metres away, drawing a long knife from his belt.
"I really hoped it wouldn't come to this" He snarled, wiping blood from his face.
In one smooth movement, he slid over to the side of the road and grabbed Mattie round the neck, holding the knife against her throat.
"Move," He warned, "And the girl gets it"
---
Zan watched, horrified, as the Stealer changed into a man. The spell was almost complete- and then she felt him slip out of her range. So close, so close...
She felt a little dizzy now. The arm of her dress felt wet. Rain? No, no, there wasn't a cloud in the sky. She touched it with her other hand. It came away red and sticky. She swallowed hard and swung round to see what the stealer was doing. The movement made the world sway.
She started forwards as he grabbed Mattie, but was pulled up short as he pressed the knife deeper into her neck. The young girl's face was frozen in a mask of shock and terror.
Slowly, slowly, that's the only way. If we leap, he'll kill her. What to do, what to do...
But it was getting harder and harder to think straight.
---
Mattie tried to swallow. She couldn't breathe. She didn't want to. Any movement could send the blade of the nife into her flesh. Would she bleed to death slowly, she thought? And why hadn't the Stealer taken her power yet?
The latter question was instantly answered as she spotted a gleam in the gutter at the side of the road. That was the ting, the thing he used for stealing. He must have dropped it in the fight.
"One of you" He hissed, his breath hot on the back of her neck, "Get that for me. Now. or she dies" He nodded at the shining thing. Mattie glanced at all of them, checking their faces, half willing them to give it to him and half hoping they wouldn't. She was dispensable. If he killed her, he could just take another of them hostage. Ash, perhaps. She wouldn't want that. In face, killing her would serve him well. They would know then that he kept his word.
Barely breathing, Mattie waited for the end to come.
