Ivy still scrambled, trying to open her eyes, while Demo and Tawny sat there, their eyes fixed on her.
"Mama, why isn't she seeing or talking?"
Demo asked, his first words. Valiente purred and licked him.

Sugar purred very loudly for a few moments, licking Demo. "She's younger than you three. She'll open her eyes and speak when she's ready." Sugar said. She wasn't worried about Ivy yet, some kits take even longer to open their eyes and they grow up fine.

Demo frowned, so did Tawny.
"But she's tiny!"
mewed Tawny.

Ivy felt angry at the conversation. She wasn't tiny! It made her want to snarl at them, she opened her mouth, but no words came, only a pitiful little wail which made her siblings laugh.

Rascal laughed along with Demo and Tawny.

"Be nice, you three." Sugar scolded. Her voice wasn't really that harsh, it was hard for her to be harsh right now since she was so happy. "Ivy is perfectly fine."

Tawny fell back laughing hysterically, but ignored Valiente's stern scolding. Demo did the same, but nearly fell in the fire. He shot to his paws, his eyes wide with shock and fear, but he was still laughing. He didn't notice that a small flame had caught alight on his tail.

Sugar yelped. "Valiente, help him!" She cried.

Rascal was laughing too. His mother's yelp startled him and he stopped. "Demo's on fire!" He gasped.

Valiente grabbed Demo's scruff and leaped up onto the bench. He twisted the Twisty-thing-that-makes-water-come and out flushed some water. He put Demo's tail under it and Demo was already wailing with pain. The fire sizzled, then stopped. Demo turned off the twisty-thing and leaped off the bench. He placed Demo down, but it was to late, his tail had only become a bob, not the long thing it was before. Demo was wailing and Valiente and Tawny licked the end of his tail.

Sugar started frantically licking his tail and the rest of him, crying "My baby! My poor, sweet little darling!" In between licks.

Rascal whimpered. "Is Demo going to die?"

Demo cried out with pain,
"It hurts!"
