@eclipseranch please don't constrew what I am saying, I never stated that this was a popularity contest. Plus, this alteration is justified through its possible form of art theft. If any other user on this site were to engage in something similar, it would be branded art theft and they would be served the consequences, rightfully so.

my point remains the same you want to "alter" what has already been created by someone
the words can be twisted however individuals want but the alteration is the basic issue.
if all my horses IRL had the same build but were different colors it would be rather boring around my ranch..just sayin

CS wouldn't be shut down over the lines, but what could very easily happen if a copyright claim was made is that every single pet on the lines in question would have to be immediately deleted. No line change, no replacements, just zap so all you'd have is an error box in place of a pet. This could happen even if the lines weren't traced and simply resembled the photo, as with the grey horse photo, if they had enough evidence of "see, these people say it's traced and it looks close enough to me, so I'm pressing the suit and filing a DMCA on it".
Another site I go on had a DMCA complaint filed. The artists had 24 hours to replace the image, or worse legal stuff could happen (I can't remember the details since it's been... a year or so, I think). So yeah, the DMCA thing could easily lead to the loss of a whole bunch of images without warning.
Just throwing that out there. ^_^
*jumping to this DMCA debate as I'm on the same site with nickjr*

DMCA complaints can be found on ANY grounds. On the other site, the picture (an avatar dress) in question, looked nothing alike yet the artists were still forced to change it. That being said, they still took inspiration from the original design and take inspiration from images of clothing for items they release now. The way DMCA complaints operate heavily favors the person who files the complaint.

It IS however, a trend with DMCA claims and that I know for certain. DMCA claims function with a basic template evident in how Youtube copyright claims do. Complaint gets filed, it gets pursued and unless you prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that you did NOT trace/rip/what have you images from. Between small groups such as individual photographers or rpg websites, there isn't much of a battle to be had. Either you win the complaint is false or you lose and have to follow the wishes of the group that filed the claim. The odds naturally get stacked against the defendant.
That's not to say though, defendants haven't won DMCA suits. When the big dogs come out to play, it's always a legal battle.
The issue of what happens if a plaintiff wins a DMCA claim is a whole other issue though. That, I think, is what the crux of the matter is in this case. The potential consequences could be serious and the site could, as someone had mentioned earlier, have to remove all the pets with no redraws. It could also just be a redraw of the lines in a certain amount of time and change to the site. Because this consequence is unknown, it makes lineart changing seem to be the course of action to take, to avoid bad repercussions.

The cat lineart isn't copyrighted to anyone but me. They were taken down because we wanted growing lineart which SaltyToothpaste helped us provide. We also wanted to stop making fanart for a book series. Coincidentally the same month we planned to take the old cats down, Warrior Cats creators contacted us to ask us to remove the name 'Warrior Cats' from our site as well as the Warior Cats character names we displayed alongside our adoptables. Since we had plans to remove them anyway, we were happy to remove both the names and the cats from the site at the same time.
This action created some confusion about exactly what had to be removed and why. Many people mistakenly believe the cat images themselves were breaking copyright and can't be used again - they weren't, just the names we displayed with them. The lineart is copyrighted to me and the designs were not copyrighted to Warrior Cats - they were natural cat coat colours we drew based on written descriptions. There's nothing stopping us from offering the exact same cats again, we just can't label them as Warrior Cats.
However, we have no intention of 'bringing the old lineart back' because it's non-growable. We only use it occasionally for special events where it doesn't matter so much that they don't grow. Otherwise, it's kind of boring. You instantly know which variation you got and there's no waiting or anticipation. All of our other pets are growable, so they would really be the odd ones out. I also prefer the appearance of the newer cat lineart.
We will never be making any pets (of any lineart) based on 'Warrior Cats' designs again because we are not allowed to use the name 'Warrior Cats' or the character names from 'Warrior Cats' as we have no association with them.
While there's nothing stopping us from using the old cat lineart again, we don't intend to release it on a regular or semi-regular basis. But we won't rule out using it for special occasions e.g. during the advent calendar or a similar event.

I disagree. Some people are already worked up and crying as it is. I don't think allowing even younger members to join the debating would turn out well. Some of them are mature enough to handle it, but overall, I doubt it'd work.
There would be no debate. That's what a private poll is. People would not be able to argue with each other, just post their vote and maybe a few words on their thoughts and reasoning that only staff would be able to read.
It's nice to be able to have a discussion so that all things can be accounted for including things that some people might not think of the first time, but in the end, I think I'd rather have the ability to give my own thoughts without the fear of being jumped on.

Completely agreed. I don't want to be jumped on either DD:
I was attempting to be polite when I gave my opinion of the new draft lines, but apparently I missed some society memo that says "no matter how polite you are, saying that something looks like an old man isn't okay, even if the old man looks nice and happy and even if you say over and over that it's perfectly fine for something to look like a nice elderly man" o__O I was jumped on for saying that and I was honestly confused because what did I say other than the phrase "old man"? I said the new drafts look cute in their own way, I said that it was A-OK for them to remind me of old men--all I said was that it was throwing me off considering that I don't expect to see things that remind me of the elderly (even if they're dressed up as adorable things) on a regular basis on a site for kiddies, and then people jumped on me saying that it looked more realistic and I was left in the dust wondering what on earth I said that implied "hey can you guys tell me if the draft looks realistic?" because I certainly didn't type out anything close to that. O___o
//end rant
