After about an hours rest I wake from my slumber, groggy eyes fluttering open to the dimely lit room. It takes me a few seconds, but I begin to realize were I am. After moving my small scratched hands up to rub my eyes I pull back the warm comferter. Slowly sitting up, I run a hand through my red curls, catching a mirror in the corner of my eye. Peeling myself from the cushy bed I adjust my shirt, gravitateing towards the mirror. Looking in, I almost have to step back. The person looking back looks nothing like the person I remember. My hair is messy and tangled, the eyes dark and sunken,and on top of it all I have a few scratches running a cross my cheeks that I have no reolection of. With a few blinks and a sigh, I move from the mirror and into the hallway, finding a bathroom. After washing my face in the bathroom sink and brushing my hair with the found comb on the conter I look a bit better. Feeling a bit guilty, I pull open the medicine cabent mirror and to my luck, find some make up. With in the next few minutes I finish applying and take another look. My complection was much better, cuts still visible, but much less sucken eyes and tangled hair. Happy, I put all the stuff I used back and headed out into the living room.

John was sitting on the couch, a small book in his hand, most likely a kids book. He looked at the drawings with his head cocked to the side. The book was so simply made, he could've made one easily. He didn't understand why anyone would actually pay money for it, but he did see how it could be somewhat comforting. He shrugged and set it on the pile of books beside him. He sighed as he saw no more books to read, so slowly, he set them all back on the shelf, organizing them alphabetically.

Entering the livng room, I smile at the scene of John going through all the books. "Any favorits?" I ask, sitting down beside him. My finger reach for a small, patterned picture book fallen astray from his stack. Brushing my fingers over the worn cover, I open to the first page and peek inside.

"I liked 'How to Kill a Mockingbird'" John said as he leaned back with a sigh and looked over at the book she had picked up. "Did you sleep well?" He asked gently as he looked over at her.

With a slight chuckle at the book, I look up and over to john. "Yea, Im sorry I kinda passed out...I haven't been taking the best care of my health since the infection started." Only able to meet his eyes for a second, embaressed slightly from my confesion, I glance back down at the book before silently closing it. After placeing it back on the pile, I tuck a stray peice of red curls behind my ear, looking back over at john.

John nodded. "It's understandable. With so much depression and destruction in our lives now a days, it's hard to keep pushing on." He shrugged. "But human nature kind of forces that push on us I guess."

"True, I didn't have much to lose anyway. I had already lost everybody but my grandma and mom before the infection..... I whatched them clam my grandma. My mom, Im not sure about my mom." I take in a somewhat shaky breath, pulling my knees up to my chest as one small silvery tear slinks down my cheek. "Last I knew my mom was in the insane asylum."

John looked over at her and set his hand gently on her shoulder. "we've all lost people we love..." He whispered, thinking about the people he had lost and the people he didn't even know about. He looked at her with empathy and sighed gently.
