The only food my dog (Shi-tzu+Bichon Frise mix) will aggree to eat is Benefull Playful Life for small dogs. We've tried many others (supposedly not good ones) and he just goes on an eating strike! Low quality foods spray there products down with rendered animal fat to make them much more appealing.

Try emailling a couple of companies and asking for free samples. I know for a fact Taste of the Wild, Ziwipeak, and wysong give out samples. I got a box from TOTW with two of every flavor dog and cat food. Wysong sent me a box with three small bags of food. Ziwipeak sent me two cans of cat food, three bags of dry cat food, one larger bag of dog food, and a deer shank bone. ;D Fromm also sends out samples I'm pretty sure and Earthborn and Natures Variety might.

Otherwise, a lot of high quality foods have $1-3 trail size bags that are normally around a lb.

Keep in mind, a lot of companies have a policy that if the dog didn't like the food and can bring it back where you bought it and switch. Try 'out there' protiens like bison, lamb, duck, rabbit, boar, kangaroo. I have never met a dog or cat that didn't go crazy over duck. Its super smelly, oilly, and fatty.. like animal crack.

My dog went crazy for deer. My dog used to go crazy for beneful, but like Cardinal said it makes it like junk food for them. If you can find a good deal for some nice food you could get two bags of different favors and mix them together. It sometimes makes it taste better. Some dogs also like fish. I really want to get my dog on a raw diet, but my dad won't let me.

Cardinal: just a question, do you make the raw meals daily, or make it them n advance and just keep it cold? How do you make the food (like how do you prepare the food)? What parts of the animals do you use? And what animals do you use? Sorry for all the question

You can make em however you long in advance you want. Meats actually fine being thawed then refrozen then thawed again. Most people mke about a weeks worth and then freeze it and either give it frozen (great in the summer!) or thaw it out and give. =) How do I make? Buy, separate it out in daily bags, then freeze. ^^; As for parts.. Whatever is on sale, normally. The goal is to have about 80% meat, 10% edible bone, 5% liver, and 5% other organ. I use a lot of poultry, but its said red meat is really best. Whole prey is also wonderful. Chicks, rabbits, guinae pigs, rats, mice, quail, fish etc. I have a couple of raw feeder friends that don't turn down fresh road kill. ;)

Organ can be a massive pain in the butt to find and I've found it easier to buy an organ 'roll' or tub from my pet carnivore . com or S.A.D. dog sushi . com. =)

We've stopped losing hair and gaining bumpies! Now if he can just stop itching we'll be good to go. I started adding a raw egg and shell to his morning meal (YUMMY he says) and I take his collar off when he's in the house as it seems to bother him so we are itching less but still very itchy.

Switched my dog to food with less of those bad ingredients. She stopped sneezing. c:

Wow, thanks for posting this! We feed our dog Pro Plan weight management, but now that I've read about all the bad stuff that goes into it I'm definitely going to talk to my parents about switching to something healthier. We hadn't really noticed any problems with her, except that she's a little overweight and has really bad breath sometimes.
It just disgusts me how people treat animals sometimes, how can those companies live with themselves? I feel really bad that I haven't looked up the ingredients before. But hopefully we will be changing her food soon and she will be happier and healthier.

Thought I'd confirm the bit about samples as I tried it out a few days ago... (Though I recommend for people getting samples, buy a bag or two of the food, because they are nice enough to give out samples, I bought at least something from all the people who sent samples) Taste of the Wild actually sent me six days worth of food for my dog, and eight days worth of food for both of my cats. Defiantly had to buy a few bags after all that generosity. I tried Ziwipeak, but they never got back to me (Or my email may have just blocked it, Hotmail tends to do stupid things like that sometimes) Wysong also is sending samples that I'm waiting for. I don't think Fromm ever contacted me back either... Earthborn does send samples and so does Natures Variety. Natures Variety doesn't send raw samples though, but you can get those at the closest store that sells their raw foods. Answers raw pet food also gives samples, however since they are only raw, they don't send them to you, you have to pick them up at a store that sells their food. Honest Kitchen gives samples.

Hope this helps anyone looking to try out the foods to see if their dog likes them first. With all this I think Bella, Sushi, And Jack won't need food for about a year  Though of course I plan to buy lots of stuff from all the different companies that sent me samples. And I hope you all will do the same.

I'm working on a way to make some extra cash every month so I can switch Alice to raw. She's just having too much issues with her coat on TOTW. It was as apparent before, but after comparing her to Dakota it's obvious.

I'll keep y'all posted for some before and after pictures if I do end up switching her :)

So, for about a month now, the dogs have been on Blue Buffalo, although they're still getting table scraps. Now that they realize they get the food regularly, it's no longer very rewarding for them. :/ Anyway, February was kind of a big month for us! 3 birthdays all in one! Clemmy hit 3 years old and is now considered a fully mature Boxer (if there even is such a thing xD), Lolita is 12 years old and worse for the wear, unfortunately, and my mom had her birthday as well.

Lolita is still doing her usual thing of holding out on us in hopes she'll get something better. I've tried taking away her food and only giving it to her 30 minutes a day but she just won't eat it until she's absolutely starving so I'm back to just leaving it out all the time for her, except for at night, as she does sometimes graze at the food (usually when she thinks I'm not paying attention). Probably doesn't help my mom is still being a wimp and giving in to her, even though I've told her not to a thousand and one times. She doesn't seem to like the darker tidbits in BB, as I am constantly finding them in my bed xD She seems to just be eating the larger, triangular pieces. Also, it's still too cold for her to be out and about regularly (we got over a foot of snow last night!), so she hasn't lost any noticeable weight. The warmest it's been is 40F the other day, and her paws went numb when she was out for too long and I had to go save her xD On the plus side, I've noticed a general increase in energy from her, though her eyesight and hearing are still as bad as ever.

Clemmy's another problem. Right now, she's not very active just because it's too dangerous to walk her on ice (pulled my shoulder a few weeks ago trying to) so she really only goes on walks on the days she's driving us up the wall. Otherwise, we're trying to play with her in the house and letting her out a few minutes at a time to run around on her own. Right now, she's on 1 1/2 cups in the morning and a cup at night but I think I'm going to have to lower that some. She's good at regulating her own intake and she hasn't been eating all her food lately. Normally, I wouldn't care and just let her do that but our cats have decided BB tastes way better then their Friskies and have been trying to eat the dogs' food. I can keep an eye on Loli's food cause she's right next to me but not Clemmy's. (And yep, I know Friskies is crud but it was a big leap just getting them to change the dogs over. I'll work on the cat food once the dogs are showing improvements in their coats.) And, of course, I'll end up raising her food back up once we're on a regular walking schedule again.
