What you are looking at here, folks, is Garrus, the first Dorun to be discovered. I primarily thought that all of his species carried the same appearance as he does, but to my surprise, that was not the case.
Garrus is considered a corrupted Dorun, among his kind they are shunned upon, and alienated. The native folk of Easter Island see the corruptions as an omen, and insist upon the sight of one to foreshadow an untimely and unfortunate event.
How does a Dorun become corrupted, you ask?
The Dorun as a species are naturally social creatures, and they refuse to travel alone. However, occasionally an anti-social will come rolling along. The Dorun will either adapt their social peers, or break the bound they where tied to the group with at birth. As Garrus has explained to me, when a Doru is born, there is a literal bond tied onto him, it connects him to his brothers, and parents, grandparents and so forth. It is like one long thread tied between all members within a group of Dorun.
This thread allows telepathic communications between all members within a group, all emotions are shared, the whole group is in complete sync with one another.
To sever that thread of connection is the equivalent to having all records (such as birth records, telephone records etc.) being completely and totally erased. Once the connection is broken, there is absolutely no connection between the Dorun and its family or passed life, no proof, only memories can linger to remind the corruption of what they once had.
Added on to the consequence of having no proof of family, the Doru will experience a complete mental breakdown, they will be unsure of what to do with them self, and cause discord wherever they go, this wears off after the physical transformation has taken place, and they are more at peace with their loneliness.
There is no going back to the normal state they once held.
Once they are corrupted, there is no redemption, there is no reset, they will stay as they appear for the rest of their lives. It is a choice for a Doru to hold the bonds they were born with, they have every right to drop it, and live it on their own, and such a life changing choice demands certainty. If they are unsure of such a change, and make it anyways, they are not only foolish, but they will also not likely survive for long.
Even though most Doru are certain of their choice on separation, and are determined to stay isolated for all of their time. There are a few cases where one will occasionally show their face to the world once more, seeking comfort. It is very rare for such a thing to occur, but it has happened in the passed.
It is hard to create the bond shared by most other Doru and their companions, it is exceedingly difficult to recreate what has been completely destroyed by a solid choice. However not impossible.
