Jack Kerouac, On the Road

-----before i would have wished for the lavish lifestyle of an elder. i mean, who wouldnt have? to not have to do duties so early in the morning, to so late? to have food hunted for you and be fed first for once. i never had to leave the comfort of my den, and if i ever did that was by my choice and my choice alone. i could bathe in the sun all day until it went to rest behind the hills, feeling the warmth seep through my skin and calm ever muscle in my body. i could share tongues with cats and be the one that stayed behind when they went off on a patrol or hunting. but that was just it. i was to stay behind. i'd forgotten everything i loved about my life, everything i had before i retired. i couldn't believe i'd forgotten what it was like to run freely through the forest, feeling the cool breeze on my face. i couldnt believe all those jokes me and the other warriors were making during patrols and all the fun times we had. heck, even border scurmishes were fun, the feeling of triumph afterwards when the opponent fled back to their own camp. and catching my own prey? i didnt like the killing part, but the fact that it put my mind to a challenge everything a little critter was speeding just whiskerlengths from my claws. to feel needed and useful, bringing back food for the queens to feed their kits or dropping a squirrel by for briarfall. i'd forgotten it all but oh it came back to me, sitting here in this isolated den, watching cats arise with the dawn to go out and do what they loved and what they got to do. while i was sitting here in this musty old den, unneeded and illuseful. i was no longer an important necessity for the clan except a cat to gather up dust where she sat. if there was one thing i forgot the most, it was the relief on the past elders faces when they finally did pass.
-----i rose from my paws, arching by back and stretching out my paws as far as they could go, that is until i heard a familiar pop and went back to my normal stance. from the glowing light just outside my den i could tell dawn had made her appearance and it was time for the day to begin. granted, it wasnt like i played any big part in the morning duties but it was nice to feel apart of the buisiness of the morning. i padded outside the den, taking a seat in the shade of my den. it was a bit chilly for an early morning, the frosted dew still on the rocks. down in the gorge, it wasnt bushes and trees that bordered our camps, no greenery was down by the water, but instead large boulders with crevices as dens and exits. i preferred it this way anyway; it felt safer. settling myself, i began to lap and smooth down my nappy pale ginger fur, ruffled from my sleep. after all, with having literally no importance left in the clan, all i had left was to make myself beautiful.tags ;; nobody.

moonshine.⊰ reckless, irrational as you are, you are still dear to the ones who love you.
mood: neutral
rank: deputy
crush: ha
moonshine pops open one eye as her brother, whitefoot, nearly tramples her in an effort to get out of the warriors’ den. she rolls her clare jade eyes and shifts where she lies, ivory green irises vaguely tracing his path as he races clumsily to the nursery. of course. whereas moonshine couldn’t care less about love, whitefoot has gotten himself a mate as soon as possible, and of course, within six heartbeats of being mates she’s pregnant and expecting kits - moonshine would anticipate nothing less from her charming and bubbly brother, who is far more effervescent and amiable than she’ll ever be. she rises to her paws; her eyes glint in the dusky gloom of the den, and she pads out slowly, stretching and looking out at the sun. she rasps her tongue over her silky ebony fur, making sure that not a hair is out of place. she’s barely a silhouette; she’s a shadow in the dark, a drop in a river, a pebble in a quarry. it’s difficult to see her because her fur is so intensely inky black. she prepares to assign various cats to their duties; she’s considering a group training session with civitpaw and the others, but maybe not minnowpaw. she has nothing against the young she-cat, but her apprentice clearly has a crush on her, and the feelings are mutual. this causes for distraction that moonshine would otherwise tolerate were it not for the fact that she had basically smacked civitpaw after instructing him to dodge a blow and he’d been too busy mooning over minnowpaw to focus. end result? bam, apprentice on the ground, stunned, puzzled, and dazed. she licks a paw and draws it over her ear. the day has started, but she feels as if she simply wants it to end.
tags ;; no one
whitefoot.⊰ in fact, the world needs more nerds.
mood: cheerful
rank: warrior
mate: orchidnose
whitefoot’s first reaction upon waking up is that he would very much like to go back to sleep. he’s naturally a dreamer and lazy, a blessing combination that irks his sister moonshine to no end, he suspects that he doesn’t make her any happier by tripping over her, but she’s slender and dark, and for starclan’s sake they live in a cave - can she cut him a break? he feels her emerald glower burn into his pelt like hot sparks as he sheepishly trips his way to the nursery, where his mate is most likely still asleep. he hovers at the entrance and watches her flank rise and fall lightly. orchidnose’s mottled calico fur is downy like dove feathers; he lightly slips into the den and presses his muzzle to the top of the she-cat’s head, nuzzling the fur by her ear. he’s probably not going to see much of her today, and this is why he comes now, at dawn, before anyone else. her skin is neither hot nor cool, it’s at a rested, steady warm temperature, and this he appreciates along with the sweet scent she continues to carry. he ducks out, smacking his head (as usual) on the roof of the den - curse the genes for tallness and yet wiry, unnoticeable muscles that he and his sister inherited. he glances at her from the corner of his eye as he pads briskly towards the apprentices’ den to wake ashpaw. his apprentice has been somewhat irritated with him lately, and he can tell. whitefoot is somewhere else, wondering about his kits and his mate, her wellbeing, along with his sister who grows increasingly distant day by day. he pokes his nose into the den. “ashpaw,” he whispers loudly, daring not to venture into the hole for fear that he’ll end up catapulting onto an innocent apprentice.

OLIVESTARE
{shecat- {refreshed- { 24moons- { mateless
dreamsarewhatstartreality
It was, as usual, another serene morning in Rushclan; these days not much seemed to go astray. Olivestare liked it that way for peace was far more acceptable to her rather than the frigid depths of discord. These days she was free to hunt in the very early hours of dawn, not that she minded much at all. The territory around them was rich and finding food to nourish the masses was the least she could do as simple warrior. Her sleek white coat, with the exception of a handful of brown splotches, was sleek from well grooming and the water it constantly was immersed in. With optimism for the rest of the uncharted day the she cat travelled back to camp with her catch of thee decently sized fish. As an apprentice she had memorized the way back to camp from practically anywhere she’d wondered off to, because Olivestare was quite known to drift off into her mind. You see, she was an avid dreamer and more than anything she did her best to make her, and anyone else’s, dreams at least seem achievable. Sometimes it wasn’t even as in depth as that, perhaps her mind would conjure up some pleasant kit like fantasy from her imagination for her to ponder about. Whatever seemed to be on her mind at that time, it usually consumed most of her attention, a fact that was proved as she suddenly made her way into camp unaware that she’d even gotten that close to her destination. Reluctantly leaving behind any thoughts she had earlier she briskly trotted toward the fresh kill pile to set down her additions to it. Out of the corner of her bright green irises she saw Whitefoot lumber out of the nursery like always at this hour; all for his dear mate. Now that was a dream unfortunately not worth chasing. Olivestare was good friends with Whitefoot, or at least that’s what she liked to believe, and at one point would not have minded having a relationship with him. He however was drawn to Orchidnose, and effectively discouraged her in ever confessing her feelings. She was by no means bitter of the queen, if anything she was quite excited for her and that she was expecting kits. It was better to be happy for others, even if you didn’t quite get what you wanted. The world doesn’t exactly revolve around one person now does it? Telling herself to find something else to think about the dappled she cat stretched out her limbs before scanning over camp to find a clan mate to speak with. Whitefoot seemed busy with his apprentice Ashpaw, so she’d have to find another clan mate to socialize with. That is, at least until patrols were assigned for there was work to be done.

SMALLFLARE
{tom- {grouchy- { 19moons- { mateless
youarefoolishtojudgeacatbytheirpelt
Now unlike his sister Smallflare was unquestionably not a morning person. He could not imagine getting up as early as she did which was saying something considering he was quite younger than her. Perhaps it was an older thing, like they didn’t need that much sleep or something. In any case the small russet warrior had no qualms with staying contently in his nest until he saw fit. As much as the clan needed warriors to serve it, he was certain it could wait until a sensible hour. His sister wasn’t the only one who seemed to rise at ungodly hours. Whitefoot with his clumsy feet got up at the crack of dawn to see his expecting mate, which the tom supposed he could understand. He himself could not think of himself having a mate or kits yet, but that was probably because of how young he was. They just seemed like a hassle, having to chase tiny tail into the nursery every ten seconds. He didn’t understand how she cats did it and it was one of the things that made him glad he was a tom. Their clan deputy also got up around dawn but that was more so because her brother woke her up lumbering out of the warriors den. She always seemed to be in across mood, either that or her face only had one expression. Of course Smallflare respected her but he did wish the cat would express a bit more emotion every now and again. Weren’t deputies supposed to be charismatic, since they’d have to be leaders one day? Well he couldn’t tell a cat how they should lead so he shouldn’t judge. He still wondered though. Eventually the tom’s comfy nest didn’t seem as comfortable, and now he felt the urge to get up as well. He body protested; curling up into a tight ball in an attempt to drift back to sleep. To his luck he could not and that meant he had to force himself out of the den. Round amber eyes rolled behind their lids in exasperation before opening and adjusting to faintly lit den. Stiffly he rose out of his nest and easily weaved through the other warriors that to his envy were still sleeping soundly. He didn’t disturb them by bumping into their sleeping forms for when you were his size any small pathway seemed like a valley. With ease he slipped out of the den and yawned widely before allowing himself to stretch out his body. With a quick shake Smallflare expelled any pesky remnants of moss or twigs that stuck to his pelt from his nest and then sluggishly he observed camp. Hopefully he wouldn’t be on dawn patrol, there really wasn’t much he could do at this time of morning other than get irritated.

Where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?
I threw some rocks up at your window
I broke some rocks right through your window
Timber, timber
We're falling down
Let the forest hear our sound
Boom ba boom ba boom
Ah ooo ah ooo
Boom ba boom ba boom
Ah ooo ah ooo
Why can't I see
What's right in front of me?

Hey there Savior Grace
Please place this rose upon the grave
It's too late
The crowd is gathered here
Doesn't make it easier to let you go
It's too late for goodbyes
It's so hard to watch them cry...tonight
It's too late now this time
It's so hard to say goodbye
I know you finally found your way
I still need you in my life
And I miss you everyday
a day hadn't passed without the screams ringing in her ears with the sounds of the past, filling the silence she longed to have ceased moons ago, now she couldn't think of anything more grand than no noise. her eyes lifted, almost sunken into their sockets from sleepless nights of discomfort and longing for something that was too distant for short paws to reach. yet, she managed a smile despite her weariness and inner turmoil. if anyone knew her prior to the death of her beloved, they could say without a doubt that she had a talent for hiding how she was really feeling, only letting her emotions be known in the darkness of the night where she was alone, away from the notice of prying eyes who felt the urge to soothe her with words she had heard a thousand times over and did not want. maybe it was just the nature of a good-hearted, or the feeble sympathetic. but, you can't spell 'sympathetic' without 'pathetic', and that's just how they looked and how they made her feel under their doting tongues.
rosepad pulled her paws over her ears, simply gazing out the mouth of the den from her nest. her stomach churned and the back of her throat tingled in an unsavouring way. by her count, the halfway point of her pregnancy had reached its checkpoint, but still she felt the sickness she did when she first learned about the life now growing inside her. she licked parched lips and sat up, slowly moving herself to a standing position and feeling the weight of her protruding belly swing lightly and brush the knees of her hindlegs. the number of kits she was going to bear had yet to be counted, but it was definitely more than one, and if at all anything, one of them was certainly as big as his father.
the sour feeling in her mouth grew when she thought of her late partner, swallowing hard and kicking the feeling to the back of her mind and falling into a better place. maybe getting some fresh air will help. she thought. and with that, she moved out and into the camp.
the morning routine of the warriors, the apprentices, the deputy and leader alike seemed repetitive at best, but it kept in tune with how nature should work; in balance, equilibrium, harmony, parity. all the same, it was better than feeling stuffed in a cave with only one other member who, as opposed to herself, was happily mated with one who still breathed. her denmate was in love with life, she was in love with death.
rosepad's eyes shifted to where briarfall rested in all her medical glory and honour. perhaps a visit to her wouldn't been all bad, get her stomach pains checked out, maybe be prescribed some herbs to ease the storm that was progressively building as her mind wandered into pits that should be avoided, 'less she slip and fall and get trapped with no way to climb out. the silver tabby gulped another drink of air and walked towards the medicine cat's den, but only made it so far before she was winded and had to sit down. she was in the way, no need to beat around the bush, but being a queen would anyone dare to tell her to move? not likely. the thought crossed her mind in a glimmer of hope that perhaps the medication would just happen to fall at her paws so she could take it in her spot and if she willed it, retreat back to the nursery and curl back into a nest that was still warm. at the same time, the coolness of the ground enticed her and her heated belly that wriggled beneath the fat stored for kits that have yet to fully develop. not much longer now, and that was still a frightening outcome, one that no amount of ambiguity could stop.

[ skycloud ] - [ she-cat ] - [ warrior ] - [ 25 moons ]
skycloud trotted into camp, two mice and a squirrel hanging from her jaws as the she-cat headed towards the fresh-kill pile. she sighed regretfully as she dropped them onto the heap of prey before she turned around, one ear flicking. but a certain feeling of pleasure flashed through her as the brown tabby realized that she the camp was strangely silent. all the other clan warrior must be sleeping away in their nests while she actually went out and hunted for her clan. ''lazy mouse-brains,'' she muttered under her breath though she took note of her fellow warriors emerging from their dens. her eyes fell upon whitefoot and she sighed, a flicker of worry leaking into her green eyes. orchidnose was younger then skycloud yet she already had a mate and future kits on the way while skycloud didn't even know herself yet. it scared her, time was ticking away, killing her slowly while she was killing time. she couldn't even get her act together and court a male, for starclan's sake! and whitefoot's sister had the deputy rank at such a young age. skycloud was honestly puzzled on why ridgestar chose moonshine to be deputy, she was still very young and there was surely other better choices like oakrise or redfoot. yet skycloud respected her leader's choice, all the same, after all, who was she to question it?
at least she had a apprentice. it would be a lie to say she wasn't thrilled when she was announced ivypaw's mentor. skycloud could easily say that she was very happy with the young she-cat and she considered ivypaw to make a fine warrior. at least she hoped that. her eyes shut as she remembered her own mentor, a tom named badgerstripe who never let her have any fun and thought everything she did was awful. never was anything she did was good it was always; 'i've seen vines climb faster then that' or 'that couldn't be a messier catch.' she knew that he was only trying to help but some comments stung like fire or were as cold as ice. over time, she began to yearn for that slight nod of his head that approved that she had done something right but they were very rare. skycloud thanked her mentor for those hurtful comments now, they had toughened her up for the better. her eyes fell upon morningflower and she bit back a sigh, hoping that she would live long enough to become an elder. she would rather die as a warrior then spend her final days shrinking away, always being left behind on the patrols and young apprentices complaining about doing chores for her. as far as the she-cat was concerned, she would be a burden to her clan and she would never want that.
the queen rank was always an option but skycloud was sure that her path was not destined for her, yet if the right tom came along she wouldn't say no. her fate lay in the paws of starclan, she would have to trust them.
skycloud's eyes brightened and her heart missed a beat as she caught sight the tom known as oakrise and she hurried over to him. she had enjoyed going on patrols with the the tom, and she longed to forge a friendship. but whenever she talked to tom, skycloud became tounge-tied and unsure on what to say. so many times had her jaws opened to speak to a listening tom yet no words came out. her pelt would prickle with embarrassment as the tom lost interest and walked away but she was on a mission to not act like that to oakrise. ''hey,'' she meowed, a slight purr in her voice. oh great, she should have planned what she was going to say. ''nice morning, huh?'' she mumured. that wasn't true for her, it was a bit chilly for her taste but she had thought of nothing else to say. eventually words came to her and skycloud's breathing evened as she opened her jaws to speak again. ''did you have nice dreams? i know i did, my sleep has been peaceful for the first time in moons.'' oh, real smooth on her part. keeping her embarrassment hidden, the thick-furred she-cat cocked her head for oakrise to reply to her mouse-brained stammering.
maybe the reason she was fond of oakrise was because he looked like her deceased brother? her father had been a clan cat, her mother a kittypet though shadowflight [her father] had told her and owlflight that they had one other sibling who her mother had kept. shadowflight had told them that her other brother was younger then them. many times her father, owlheart and her had gone out to find their missing brother and son but there had never been any success. grief had washed over skycloud when she had lost her father to greencough but a spark of her died when owlheart had been killed by a fox-hearted rouge. skycloud had been with her tabby brother at the time, they had been hunting when a dark grey rouge attacked them. skycloud had slain the rouge after he gave the fatal blow that killed owlheart yet she hadn't been the same cat as before. the joyful and reckless she-cat had been replaced by a bitter ghost of the cat she had once been. her clanmates had avoided her over it yet skycloud didn't blame them.

[ monty ] - [ tom ] - [ loner ] - [ 21 moons ]
it was hard to believe that once upon a time, monty had been a plump and healthy kittypet. now his pelt was ruffled and you could count his ribs. it was his very own fault; he had been the one that wanted to have a adventure before abandoning his twolegs. why had he done that? his once sleek black and white fur was now ragged with thorns and mud. realizing the faults in his mistake, he had slunk back to his house, expecting his twolegs to welcome him back with open arms as they scooped him up. instead he found that he had been replaced. a beautiful calico she-cat had stood in his place though he had tried anyway. with his best pleading face, he had tried to eat some of the calico's food but that didn't end well. he was attacked by the she-cat and his former twolegs had thrown hard objects at him, injuring his shoulder. even now, it was extremely painful to take a single step and his belly was hollow with hunger. death was around the corner unless someone took pity of him, giving him something, anything, to fill his belly. but by now he had began to accept the end though the tom still clung to a scrap of hope.
a rustle of a body against the leaves made his ears pricked as his amber gaze peered through a bush, brightening as he spotted a plump rabbit. finally, some food? a sly grin spread across his hungry face as the black and white tom dropped to a crouch, stalking forward. oh, no. a twig snapped under his back and the rabbit perked it's head up, instantly alert. panicking, monty sprang forward, his claws unsheathed as he took chase after the rabbit. but his speed didn't match the rabbit, he was far to weak, anyway, as he gave up, upset that he didn't catch it as a wave of disappointment washed over his pelt. he had been so close to getting a decent meal.... a wail of anger ripped from his chest as the tom furiously tore at the grass. everything had to go wrong, didn't it? he had no hunting skills at all, what chance did he have of surviving? and there was no way that he would even consider joining with that group of cats. the stories that monty had heard about them had made the black and white tom shudder but his mother had thought otherwise. whenever he mentioned the stories to her, she would become angry and wouldn't speak to her son for the rest of the day.
yet there was one of those cats that had caught his eye, and had made him thought twice about how awful these cats were thought to be. when he wasn't busy looking for a meal, he would taste the air to see if he could catch her scent. Or eagerly wait [hidden in a bush] at the entrance of the camp to see if she would emerge or not. when she did, monty's eyes would light with excitement and his tail would swish with joy. over time, he had learned her name was moonrise which he thought was a stunning name. maybe she would come a find him? well, if she didn't he was certain that another one of those cats soon. he had been completely stupid, yowling like that and announcing himself to the rest of the world. would they kill him? the thought didn't make monty mind too bad, he was headed for death anyway with the way he was going. the quick slash of claws against his throat was quicker then starving to death, right?
but monty hadn't completely accepted death right. there was still some fight left in him and the next choice he made was stupid and dangerous but he was willing to do it. a wild glint in his eyes, the scruffy tom crept towards the camp, held his breath and raced into the entrance. what was he doing? this could lead to death but also life and monty's mouth watered as he spotted a pile of prey, topped with a thrush. his rumbling belly reminded the tom that he might finally have some food. pelting towards the pile he grabbed the thrush in his jaws as his head snapped up, looking back at the entrance of the camp, ready to run again.
