I personally disagree with the Thorns of Death-theory.
Though I am inclined to agree with the second part of your answer.

I see Will as a rather emotional person, really. We don´t know what kind of person he was before the time of the Will the Reaper-OVA, but hey - he seemed like the kind of guy who would attract bullies rather easily. What better to do than build a thick and high wall of ice around you? So no one can see your emotion and therefor, cannot hurt you.

I see him as a very...lonely person. Maybe even scared of his own emotions.

I used to be a lot like Will when I was in my early teens. Now I´m more like...err..a kind of mixture between Will and Grell . XD

This is the reason why I think Will and Grell go together so well - not only because they´re my OTP.

Grell is the exact opposite of Will. He always shows how he feels and is never afraid of oother people´s reactions towards them. Plus, he is the only one who can make William rage - and if that´s not an honest emotion, than I don´t know. Will is the rock in Grell´s wavy sea, his anchor, and Grell the colourful spot in the icy world he build around himself.
