Short Story:
"The green silk girl, the green! And stop that dawdling, they're almost here!"
Grumbling quietly, the girl turned back to the chest, riffling through the stacked silks in search of whichever green silk the caravan master wanted.
"You had to choose a silk caravan to run away with, didn't you? And not just any silk caravan, on no, you had to choose the richest. Brilliant, Caiendre, absolutely brilliant.
Shaking the hair out of her face, the young woman straightened, turning back to the door, a soft green silk held carefully in her hands. Nodding, the caravan master, Layala, took it from her with a gentleness she showed to little else. Running it through her fingers, she turned, one hand reaching to pat the easy mannered horse at her side.
"If you hadn't chosen us, girl, you would have been out on the sands faster than you could say 'stow-away'. Feed Nemir, would you?"
Cai couldn't help but laugh, even as she reached for the bucket.
---
Wiping the sweat from her face, Cai patted Nemir on the neck as he drank, eyes locked on the approaching wagons.
The other train had first been sighted a few days ago, and had continued to draw ever closer. As their caravan was on the way to the yearly market, it wasn't a strange occurrence to run into others on the journey.
What was strange was that such an opulent caravan would choose this particular route, one generally avoided. The silk caravan had taken it only as a last resort, having been forced to stop in various towns to replace the horses they had lost to colic in the spring.
This caravan, though-Cai could see why Layala had wanted the green silk.
The carts were like gemstones, glinting in the desert sun: purples and blues of every hue; more reds and greens than she had ever seen. Each was draped in all manner of fabric, and several had colorful strings running between them, strips of silk streaming like banners.
And every one was pulled by an Elkrin.
Cai whistled.
"You ever seen anything that beautiful, Nemir?"
The horse snorted, nosing at the bucket she still held in her hand, far more interested in food. The girl laughed, pushing his nose away.
"Alright then, greedy guts. What do you say we go find some more, 'eh?"
Nemir nickered in agreement.
---
The caravans had pulled alongside one another and set to preparing for the chill night ahead. Cai threaded her way through the wagons, shaking her head in wonder as she went searching for Layala.
A sudden noise caught her attention, and she turned, startled, coming face to face with one of the fabled Streamflare Elkrin. Her breath caught in her throat as the majestic beast turned, deep brown eyes catching the young woman's blue ones. Cai lifted one hand, fingers trembling, as she reached out towards the beautiful creature, palm up. Chuffing softly, the beast lowered it's antlered head, nostrils flaring as it pulled in her scent, muzzle resting just above her suddenly tingling skin. A soft sound formed in her mind, struggling to the surface like the words of some long-forgotten song. Her lips twitched, slightly, as she strained, trying to capture the elusive thought.
"Excuse me..."
Cai's hands locked into fists, rising to about chest height as she turned, alarmed at the sudden interruption. The young man behind her leaped back, startled at the sudden movement, only to rock backward on his heels, laughing.
"Can I help you?" Cai growled, trying to hide her embarrassment and her blush. The young man, someone she realized she had never seen before, grinned as he sketched bow.
"Eliz, at your service."
Nodding, Cai glanced backward the Elkrin, still standing their, stoic and immovable. Eliz leaned sideways, his grin growing even wider, if that was possible, as he caught sight of the great beast behind her.
"I see you've met Norion, then."
Cai spun back around, eyes wide. "Norion?" Eliz nodded, a strange seriousness creeping into his gaze. He watched, silent, as the girl turned back to the great Elkrin, hand flat once more. With a snort, and what almost seemed a glare in the boy's direction, Norion lowered his head once more, lipping at her palm. Cai's lips curled into a grin, so bright it seemed to change her entire face.
A light pressure on her arm caught the girl's attention again, and Cai felt her smile dim at the raw emotion in the young man's eyes.
"What? What's wrong?" Cai's voice broke as a sudden fear washed over her. The young man chuckled, as if he could read her mind.
"I wouldn't say it's something wrong, as much as it is something...difficult to explain."
Stepping back, Eliz's hand slid down her arm, fingers circling her wrist as he pulled her forward, towards the center of the encampments. "I think, perhaps, we should let Master Naomi explain. Shall we?"
Cai nodded, unable to speak through the lump in her throat. As she followed after him, eyes wide, she felt a gentle pressure between her shoulder blades. Looking back, she felt a strange sense of peace wash over her as she met Norion's soft brown eyes.
Steady.
Cai blinked, lips parted in shock at the voice, soft as a whisper in her mind. Turning, the question for Eliz died on her tongue as she realized the stood before the opening to the caravan master's tent. Squaring his shoulders, Eliz flashed her a reassuring grin as he stepped through the opening, pulling her with him.
The talk stuttered to a stop as they walked inside, all eyes drawn to the trio. Layala frowned, even as the other master turned.
"Son, what is the meaning..."
Eliz grinned.
"I think...that Norion finally found a rider he can stand."
Cai blinked, gazing at the thunderstruck faces around her and knowing her's matched. Behind her, the Elkrin snorted, head dipping to rest on her shoulder.
