The agents dragged Jenette away and into a room. Just as I was about to walk into the room behind her, they slammed the door shut, leaving me all alone in the hallway. I stared at the door for a few minutes, then slowly turned around. I had taken Jenette back to the agency (which the secret agents built up again [it was destroyed in the war]) so that they could hopefully find out what was wrong with her. I knew she didn't remember me, but why? And how was she an arrow-shooting expert before?
Amy.
I whirled around and faced my mom. Or, at least, who I thought was my mom. No, it wasn't Linda. It wasn't even "mom". It was Agent Cornelia.
Hey.
Are you... um.... you okay?
I guess.
We stood there in silence. I heard some sort of drilling noise and looked over at the door which had been slammed in my face only seconds before.
What are they doing to her?
They're looking over her, don't worry. She'll be fine.
There were a ton of other loud noises coming from the room, making me really want to go in there and see what was going on. But I had questions for Agent Cornelia.
Are you.... are you really my mom?
Of course, Amy. Why wouldn't you think I was?
It's just... I met someone. She said she was my mom. And she gave proof...
Amy, people have lied about being related to you before. Remember?
Yes, but she gave proof.
What's your point?
You've never given me proof.
Agent Cornelia opened her mouth but then shut it again.
And so I have to wonder if you really are my mom or not.
She was quiet.
Well, are you?
I.... I thought.... and you were right there and... and I just took you and I thought there was no one there and-
Mom? What are you talking about?
Amy, I.... I... I found you on the side of the road. You were in a stroller. Nobody was around. So I just... I just took you. I thought you had been abandoned. But then in the Newspaper I saw a picture of you and it said you were missing. I should have given you away to your real mother, but I didn't want to. You were so sweet and kind and I just couldn't give you up.
So... you stole me?
No! Well, yes. But I didn't know that somebody was coming back for you. I thought you were abandoned and I couldn't just let you die in the cold...
But you had the chance to do the right thing! To give me back to my real mom!
I couldn't bear to let you go. Your sister loved you too. She didn't want you to go.
Wait, my sister?
Jenette. She is my daughter by blood. And you I sort of... adopted into my family.
So... Jenette isn't really my sister by blood?
No.
Wait, what about when I was with Linda and Sorrow?
That's the thing. They stole you and Jenette from me and took you. I never saw you again until you joined the agency.
Why the heck was everybody stealing me?!
So... you've lied to me this whole time? And so has Jenette?
Jenette doesn't know anything about this. She doesn't remember you being adopted, she just remembers you being there. So I told her that you were her sister... by blood.
So you lied to her, too?
Agent Cornelia was quiet.
You know, when you told me you were my mom I was so happy. You know why? Because for once, I thought I found someone who actually loved me and cared about me and who wouldn't do anything bad to me.
But I do love you and care about you!
But you would do something bad to me.
No! Never!
You lied to me. Multiple times. That's something bad, isn't it?
Agent Cornelia was silent again. Anger bubbled inside me. Anger I had never known before.
Why can't things just be easy?! Why can't I be regular like all the other dogs?! Why can't I have a normal family?!
You do have a normal family!
Oh, really? You call finding out that your mom is a snake, then finding out she really isn't your mom, then finding out that your arch nemesis is really your sister, then finding out that who you thought was your best friend is really trying to kill you, then finding out that who you thought was your "real" mom really isn't related to you at all is NORMAL?!
Agent Cornelia was quiet again.
I'm just... I'm done with all the lies. I'm done with you! I'm... I'm done with saving the world.
