Drawing without lines, step three

Postby troblsomtwins829 » Wed Jan 23, 2013 8:52 am

here's where things start getting harder, you've really gotta get creative with how you color and shade(as you can see with the leg strap), you need to mix both the color the object naturally has, and the colors of the shading spectrum you're working with (the light yellow to very dark purple/blue) it' provides a very natural feel to how the light and shadow is reflected onto the surface. now this is pretty much one layer per part, when doing something like this, not only is it organized, but it can be a bit of a handful as well. when doing separate parts per color, make sure to squeeze in as many as you can. IE, the boot-legs and the sleeves for the gloves on one layer, and the skin and pants an another and so on. the coloring gets confusing after a while, which is why it's good to have a bank with everything you need right there.

When shading with a light source like this, you need to be really careful and creative with your shading, as previously stated. on the leg strap, I chose a purple that was close to the brown I would use that also corresponds to the location from the light. in other words, the coat blocks some of the light, so it's slightly dark there, so then I need a darker color than if the light were right there.
I left some of the colors the original from where you color it in, just like lines, you need to make your base color first. so there it is. I also started on the hair as you can see.
Hair doesn't have any natural or orderly fashion to it unless it's held in something(like a bun, hair decor, fancy princess hat and so on) so you can go nuts with it, there is no right or wrong way to do it, but keep in mind, it does have a "flow" one part always follows a pattern to another part. as you can see here. you can use your own hair for practice, or a wig if yours isn't long enough.
what I do with shading in line-less is always start on the brightest color. I know it sounds counter-intuitive and contradicting to what most people do and tell you, but trust me on this. if you already know how light you want it, then getting the darker portions to stick out are easy.

I'll get to the specifics of shading hair later, right now, we need to focus on the jacket and boots.

Trobl, that is amazing.
I just draw lineless by drawing lines, colouring and then erasing the lines. |D

and i want a moment to be real
wanna touch things i don't feel
want to hold on and feel i belong
and how can the world want me to change?
they're the ones that stay the same
they don't know me
