How do you get the layers to work in GIMP is there like a lock alpha?

How do you get the layers to work in GIMP is there like a lock alpha?

It's not off topic. It's so I can color some gimp lines.

If you are using an older version there is a "lock layer" box that you select if I remember correctly at the top of the layer box
if you are using the newer one there is the "lock alpha channel" option that you can select to lock the colour layer also at the top of the layer box
