What would you do if no one in your Clan liked you? If no one gave you a first chance? If everyone was plotting against you? If you became deputy, and everyone wanted you gone and teased you that you leader, who's you're mother, is favoring you? Would you kill any cat that would try to challenge you? Would you hide and try to not talk with anyone? And then, what would you do if after all those moons of hate for no reason, someone gave you a second chance?Warriors (C) Erin Hunter

A young kit sat alone in the nursery. He had ruffled and messy creamish-white fur, and stood out strangly against the backround. Sadness drifted through his blue eyes and he stared at the ground. Why did they all leave when I came back? He had been with his mother that morning, and when she brought him back to the nursery he found none of the kits wanted to hang back with him. His mother was the leader, Smoothstar, and she was usually to busy to stand up for him.
"Hello?" He looked up to see a pretty tortiseshell she-kit with a white face and chest standing in the entrance, and immediately got to his paws. "Did they go play without me?" She asked, turning her eyes on him.
He hesitated, rather surprised to have someone talking to him. "Uh...yes."
"What's your name?" She asked, tilting her head.
"Coarsekit," He stuttered.
She smiled. "I'm Cloverkit. How about we go teach those kits a lesson for abandoning us?"
Coarsekit looked at his paws. "I-I don't know. They kind of left me behind right when I came back."
"Your Smoothstar's kit, aren't you!" Cloverkit purred. "They're probably just jealous she takes you out of camp in the mornings and they're stuck here. I'm a bit jealous, too."
"I don't think they like me," He admitted.
Cloverkit rolled her eyes. "Don't be silly! If they didn't like you, then they haven't met you. You're too nice!" Coarsekit didn't look up. "Come on!" She meowed, padding up beside him and pushing him forward. He let her padded ahead, and followed after her.
Coarsekit felt his confidence rise as he ran things through his mind. They haven't met me yet. What do they have against me? She caught up with Cloverkit, matching her pace. He spotted the five kits that had left him behind at the nursery. One was a large, dark brown tabby tom and he was pinning down a small blue-gray and white tom. A black and white kit was sitting beside them, but ignoring them. He was watching the two she-kits leaping into the air. A brown she-kit with a white belly was jumping higher than the grey she-kit with white streaks.
They were being watched by a brown she-cat with a long fluffy tail, and a blue-gray she-cat with black flecks on her back. Her remembered the blue-gray she-cat's name was Waterdapple, and the brown she-cat was Treetail. Spending so much time with Smoothstar had helped him learn the names of most of the cats, though none of his denmates' names.
The black and white tomkit turn his bold yellow eyes on him, and soon the other kits looked towards them. "Hey Cloverkit," the brown tabby meowed. "Who's that?"
"Coarsekit," He responded for her.
The tomkits padded up to him, while Cloverkit bounded over to join the other two. "Who are you three?" Coarsekit asked.
They ignored him, slowing beginning to circle him. They met him with cold eyes, their eyes glittering with hate. "You can get us outside the camp, can't you?" The tabby meowed.
"No," Coarsekit meowed nervously.
"Yes you can," The blue-gray tom meowed, diving for his paw.
The black and white kit put his paw down on his brother's shoulders. "Leave the poor kit alone, Smallkit." His words were kind but there was a glimmer in his eyes Coarsekit didn't like.
"Just playing around," The tabby meowed. "Not like you'd know what it's like to play with kits instead of your mother."
"At least you get to see her," Coarsekit defended, but he immediatly regretted.
"If you want to see her, why don't you go find her? You can be a kit forever!" He said mockingly.
"Shut up, Bigkit!" Cloverkit yowled. "Quit picking on him!"
Bigkit snarled, looking over his shoulder, but then he shrunk away. At firest Coarsekit didn't know why, then his eyes fell on Waterdapple. "Bigkit," she meowed sternly. "You come here."
He slunk over to her, leaving Coarsekit back with Smallkit and the black and white kit. He wanted to ask him for his name, but he guessed he should go against it. Bigkit sat down beside his mom, furious. Smallkit scampered towards him, then looked back at the other tom. "Come on, Swiftkit!"
Swiftkit looked back at Coarsekit, as if deciding whether to follow his brothers or stay with him. Coarsekit was pleading in his mind for Swiftkit to stay. He needed a friend. Swiftkit mouthed something to him, before turning away and padding calmly after Littlekit. Why don't you go with the she-kits? My brothers'll kill me if I abandone them.
Coarsekit sighed, then padded towards Cloverkit and the other two.
"Hey Coarsekit," Cloverkit greeted him.
"Hi," The other two she-kits meowed dully.
"Hello," Coarsekit meowed, trying to not to sound excited to have some kits to play with that would just bite his paws and insult him.
"Want to join us? We were just going to play with a moss-ball," Cloverkit meowed.
Coarsekit nodded, biting back his enthusiasm. "Sure," he meowed.
"Great! This'll be fun!" Cloverkit explained to them the game, more to him than her friends, they started tossing it around. He learned that the brown she-kit was Featherkit and the white and grey she-kit was Icekit. As they tossed it around, Coarsekit easily picked up on the pattern.
Featherkit and Icekit were keeping the moss-ball between themselves, but they'd pass it to Cloverkit frequently. Cloverkit didn't mind being left out, but they were doing it for a reason. Cloverkit would equally toss it to Featherkit, Icekit, and him. He'd toss it to Featherkit and Icekit just as much as he'd toss it back to Cloverkit when he got it, but it was clear the two sisters didn't want him there. He tried to impress them, leaping high in the air, sweeping it out from under himself, hooking it around to them, but it didn't matter. They'd just let it drop, sweep it up, then turn their back on him and start passing it without him.
He was somewhat relieved when the sunset and Smoothstar came to get him. Cloverkit was nice, and Swiftkit wanted to be nice to him, but none of the others were. Bigkit made fun of him, Smallkit almost bit him then ran away when Bigkit got in trouble, and Featherkit and Icekit barely acknowledged he was alive.
"Did you have fun with the other kits?" Smoothstar asked before she sent him to the nursery to sleep.
Coarsekit didn't want to dump any problems that may be non-exsistent on his mom, but he couldn't lie. "I had fun tossing the moss-ball. Cloverkit was really nice."
Smoothstar smiled. "Same as Lightheart. Now, go on." Coarsekit scampered into the nursery. He didn't hesitate to get out of sight of his mom, but he was reluctant to actually lay down. He didn't want to draw attention to himself. He swallowed back his fear, knowing that's what Smoothstar would've done, then marched in. He immediately layed down, and faced the nursery wall, but he could still Bigkit's eyes burning his pelt.
What did I do to you?

Image is from Cats of the Clans; Leafpool. (C) to Erin Hunter.Coarsekit was pacing kicking up moss. "Coarsekit, will you please settle down?" Smoothstar meowed sleepily.
Since all the other kits had become apprentices, Smoothstar had let Coarsekit sleep in the leader's den with her so he wouldn't sleep in there on his own.
"Sorry," he mumbled.
"Let me guess, you're excited?" Smoothstar asked.
Coarsekit kept pacing. "No. I just liked it a bit better when the other kits were in the same den as me. He haulted, then turned his eyes on her. "Why would I be excited?"
Smoothstar purred. "You have your apprentice ceremony tomorrow."
"Really?" Coarsekit asked, doing a little jump.
His mother smiled, and dipped her head. "Yes."
"I completely forgot! I'm six moons tomorrow! I get to be an apprentice with Cloverpaw and Swiftpaw!" He exclaimed, starting to run in circles, going for his tail.
Smoothstar put a paw out infront of him, and Coarsekit slammed into it, falling on his back. "Settle down," she meowed. "The later we're up, the longer I'll sleep."
"Oops," He meowed, laying down beside her. She layed her head on her paws, and after several long heartbeats, he meowed, "Who's my mentor?"
His mother put her paw over his muzzle. "Every kit has to wait until their ceremony to find out," she yawned.
"Aw, come on!"
"I discussed it with Redriver," she meowed. "Go bother him about it."
"Ok!" He meowed, jumping to his paws and heading for the entrance.
Smoothstar's head jerked up and she swept him back with her paw. "I wasn't serious," she laughed. "Don't wake him up. Just go to sleep, and the morning will be here before you know it."
Coareskit huffed, the collapsed beside his mother. He closed his eyes, and forcing them not to open again, and prayed for morning to come until he drifted off to sleep.
Coarsekit lifted his head, blinking away the sleep from his eyes. The sun was streaming through the ferns that grew ontop of the cave that was the leader's den and drapped over the entrance. He looked to his side, and through the shadow he saw Smoothstar was gone. She didn't wake me up!
He jumped to his paws and ran outside the den. He skidded to a hault right as he reached the edge. Outside the leader's den was a short ledge, and that was all the seperated the den and the ground which was a fox-length below. He turned around, backing up as far as he could, and found his mother in the same spot she was always at in the morning; on the flat top of the den.
"You forgot to wake me up when you did!" Coarsekit pointed out.
Smoothstar looked down at him, finished grooming her paw. "I got up before the sun rose. You're still up early."
He looked around, and saw that a couple of the warriors were still padding out of the warriors den, and none of the apprentices were out of their den. "I'll call the meeting now."
Coareskit smiled, satisfied, then jumped down. His paws stung for a heart beat, and he grinded his teeth. I knew I should've jumped onto the other ledge first. Once the pain went away, he padded out into the middle of the camp.
"Cats of WaterClan gather beneath the flat rock for a clan meeting!" Smoothstar called, leaping onto the even higher rock face above her den. The last few warriors padded out of the den, and the 6 young apprentices bounded out of the apprentices den, followed by the older apprentices; Hollypaw, Midnightpaw, and Wetpaw.
"By naming apprentices, we show that WaterClan will survive and remain strong." Smoothstar meowed. "From this moment on, until he has earned his Warrior Name, this Apprentice will be known as Coarsepaw."
Coarsepaw felt excitement rushing through him as she went on. "Redriver, you are now ready to take on another apprentice. You will be mentor to Coarsepaw. Redriver, you have shown yourself to be a warrior of patience and skill. I'm sure you will pass on all you know to this apprentice."
Coarsepaw stepped forward, and he was glad to see kindness in the red tabby's blue eyes. He touched noses with his mentor, excitement bursting through him. I'm the deputy's apprentice!
"Coarsepaw! Coarsepaw!" Suddenly, the young tom felt a grim shadow creep through him. Half of the cats cheers were stiff and cold. Some were honestly happy for him, others were envious. He knew it wasn't just him; Redriver was standing in a protective stance beside him. Smoothstar was glaring down at her Clan, furious.
"This meeting is over," she meowed stiffly, leaping down. Redriver flicked his tail to one of the cats in the crowd, then swept Coarsepaw away with his tail before any cats approached them to congratulate him. Redriver led him out of the camp, then found a secluded spot between a rock and the camp wall. Coarsepaw sat next to Redriver, his eyes on his paws. What went wrong?
He looked up as he heard pawsteps approaching, and recognized Briarleaf, Redriver's sister, approach. His eyes then fell on Cloverpaw, who was beside her. "Hey Coarsepaw!" she purred a greeting.
"Hi," he replied, forcing a smile. He then looked up at Redriver. "What are we doing?"
"Briarleaf and I had decided this morning that we could start off your training with some hunting practice," The red tabby meowed. He was obviusly avoiding talking about what had happened at the ceremony, though an expression of anger was still on his face.
"You two ready?" He asked Briarleaf and Cloverpaw.
Brirarleaf nodded, and Redriver got to his paws. He led the way out into the forest, Briarleaf at his side. Cloverpaw padded beside Coarsepaw behind him. He let out a hefty sigh, and caught Cloverpaw's eye. She had been happy when she first appeared, but now there was concern in her eyes. Her eyes asked the same question he was asking himself.
What just happened?

"It's not going to be like this always, is it?" Cloverpaw's question startled Coarsepaw. After what had seemed like ages of hunting all day, secluded from the Clan, Redriver and Briarleaf had let the pair of apprentices try hunting on their own.
Coarsepaw watched as the shrew he'd been after disappeared, but decided to not bring it up. He stood up out of his crouched position, and turned to her. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, we've spent probably half a moon doing the same thing," Cloverpaw meowed. "Slipping out of camp before dawn, coming back in after sun set with our fresh-kill. I mean, why do we have to hide?" She asked, turning to face him.
"I don't know," Coarsepaw sighed. "Everyone hates me, and Bigpaw and Littlepaw are leading it."
"You never got a chance to know them well," Cloverpaw pointed out, sticking up for her den mates.
"That's because they wanted to bite my paws off the first day. I mean, they didn't really try to learn who I was either. Swiftpaw was going to be my friend, and they ruined that for me too!" He was started to get mad, starting to bare his teeth at the ground and staring at his paws.
"We could just talk to Redriver and see if you could get a training session with them, maybe clear things up?" Cloverpaw suggested.
"What, no!" Coarsepaw hissed, jumping to his paws. "I'm not going to be made a fool again for trying to be their friend! It's not fair that I be the nice cat all the time just so I could be shot down!"
Cloverpaw stood up to, concern in her eyes. "Calm down! You made friends with a lot of cats, you could be friends with our denmates too."
Coarsepaw glared at her. "No. I've spent my whole life trying to please those fools."
"What will happen if you prove them wrong?"
Coarsepaw was now very confused. "Prove them wrong about what?"
"They all say that you want to be leader," Cloverpaw meowed. "And Bigpaw always says you can be a leader in StarClan, but not here in WaterClan. What if you proved them wrong?"
Coarsepaw shrunk away. "No! No, I don't want to!" He turned and ran, shutting out her cries for him to come back. No! My mother's the Clan leader! My mentor's the deputy! Who would have to die for me to be leader! After running this through his head several times, she slowed to a hault. But...how many more cats would have to die for Bigpaw to be leader?
"Whoa," Coarsepaw whipped around when he heard a voice from behind him. It was a huge black tom. He had thick shoulders, a slim body, torn ears, a long, slim tail, a white blaze that ran from his nose, down his muzzle, across his head, and down his neck. His yellow eyes glittered with gold hate. "What's a little scrap doing all alone in the forest?" He asked, lowering his muzzle below Coarsepaw. Looking at him, he felt as if he was looking into the gaping jaws of a bear.
"Leave me alone Midnightpaw," Coarsepaw growled.
"What's bugging you?" The older apprentice asked.
"I...nothing."
"Come on," Midnightpaw said smoothly, circling around him until he was sitting beside Coarsepaw. "You can tell your buddy anything."
"Everyone hates me, no one thinks I can be leader, Cloverpaw wants me to prove them wrong, but two of the cats that actually care that I exsist have to die for that to happen," Coarsepaw muttered.
"That's a bit of a mess," Midnightpaw meowed.
"It's more then a bit of a mess," He sighed. "It's a huge, shadowy, tangled mess!"
"I have a suggestion for you," Midnightpaw told him. Coarsepaw looked up at the tom. He put his big white, grey, and black paw on across his back and on his shoulder. Coarsepaw slowly looked over his shoulder as he felt cold claws slide out over his fur. He turned back to Midnightpaw stiffly as he began to speak. "Forget what we all think. Just have Redriver put you in the most dangerous positions you can get yourself into, and then get yourself out. Who cares who you have to step on to get to a spot where not everyone hate hates you. Right never every cat is jumping ontop of your head because you can't fight back. Prove them wrong, but you don't have to be leader."
Midnightpaw stood up, relief flooding through Coarsepaw as he sheathed his claws. "I don't have to be leader?"
"Nah," Midnightpaw meowed, turning back to look at him. "You won't actually be named Coarsestar or anything; but the way everyone looks at you they'll think you're more of a leader than Bigstar."
Coarsepaw watched him as he disappeared into the brush. Bigstar. The name rung in his mind. Then fear slammed into him. He thinks Bigpaw will be leader too!
